  • The plant Rubus species (Rosaceae) mainly contains $19{\alpha}-hydroxyurane-type$ triterpenoids $(19{\alpha}-HUT)$ as bioactive components. Available functional food includes blackberry (the fruit of thornless Rubus sp.), red raspberry (R. idaeus) and black raspberry (R. occidentalis). However, the fruit of R. coreanus, which is used in Korea as a functional food, substitutes black raspberry. Rubi Fructus, which has been traditionally used as an oriental medicinal drug, designates only unripe fruit of R. coreanus but not its ripe fruit which indicates that it needs high content of $19{\alpha}-HUT$ as a crude drug. Throughout our experiment, we found that ripe fruits contain very little amount of $19{\alpha}-HUT$ when compared to unripe fruits. In addition, various and rich $19{\alpha}-HUT$ has been reported from Rubus species. The most common structure of $19{\alpha}-HUT$ of Rubus species, euscaphic acid or tormentic acid with $3{\alpha}-OH$ or $3{\beta}-OH$, respectively, can be glycosylated or oxidized to produce a number of $19{\alpha}-HUTs $as euscaphic acid and tormentic acid derivatives and even esterified to form dimeric triterpenoids. In this review, the bioactivity and biosynthetic pathway and chemical characterization of $19{\alpha}-HUTs$ found in Rubus species are discussed.

  • The Korean folk medicine 'Jin Hae Cho Ip' has been used as a remedy for neuralgia and as an invigorating drug after a childbirth, etc in Korea. With regard to the botanical origin of 'Jin Hae Cho Ip', several species of Potentilla (Rosaceae) has been refired, but no pharmacognostical study has yet been performed in this regard. To clarify the botanical origin of the 'Jin Hae Cho Ip', the morphological and anatomical characteristics of the leaflets and petioles of Potentilla and Sibbaldia species growing in Korea, such as P. chinensis, P. cryptotaeniae, P. dickinsii, P. discolor, P. fragarioides var. major, P. freyniana, P. kleiniana, P. matsumurae, P. paradoxa, and S. procumbens, were compared. As a result, it was found that 'Jin Hae Cho Ip' was composed of the leaves of P. Chinensis and P. discolor.

As most of the species were recorded from the mountain-trails, the long-term habitat monitoring for the species is required .

  • About 154 weed species composed of 31 annuals, 33 biennials, and 90 perennials belonging to 38 families were identified from golf courses in Dongrae, Joongmoon and Ora country clubs on June and September, 1992. Compositae was the most widely occurring family covering 30 species, followed by 28 species in Graminae, 12 species in Leguminasae and Rosaceae, respectively, and 7 species in Caryopbyllacese etc. The bighest number of weed species occurred in the out of bounds in three golf courses, The dominant weed species based on importance value and frequency were Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides, Poa annua, Cyperus rotundus, Oxalis corniculata, Digitaria sanguinalis and Artemisia prinseps.

  • Fiftythree species(35 families and 52 genera)of Korean medicinal plants which have been frequently used in oriental herb prescriptions or have been used as folklorics were evaluated on their short term acute toxicity and potential antitumor activities against P-388 murine lymphocytic leukemia model in vivo. Among these plants Acorus gramineus (Araceae), Agrimonia pilosa (Rosaceae), Aralia elata (Araliaceae), Dryopteris crassirhizoma (Aspidiaceae), Syringa reticulata (Oleaceae) and Calystegia japonica (Convolvulaceae) exhibited potent acute toxicity resulting from severe weight loss and death. Agrimonia pilosa (Rosaceae) showed about 33% of increased life span in comparison with that of control group mouse, but others exhibited no significant antitumor activities.

  • Antidepressant miquelianin (quercetin 3-O-glucuronide) was isolated from the leaves of Rubus craetaegifolius (Rosaceae) and identified by physical and spectroscopic data. Miquelianin was quantitatively analyzed in the leaves, mature and premature fruits of Korean wild R. craetagifolius, R. pungens var. oldhami, R. coreanus, and R. parvifolius by HPLC. The contents of miquelianin was highest in the mature fruit of R. crataegifolius ($16.29{\pm}0.79mg/g$); however, the content of kaempferol 3-O-glucuronide was $33.88{\pm}7.68mg/g$. These results suggest that the mature fruit of R. crataegifolius would be beneficial for treating depression or stress as a functional food with its sweet taste.

  • Korean folk medicine 'O-I-Pul' has been used to cure arthritis, neuralgia, leucorrhea, snake-bite, vomiting and diarrhea. With regard to the botanical origin of O-I-Pul, it has been considered to be Sanguisorba species of Rosaceae, but there has no pharmacognostical confirmation on it. Morphological and anatomical examination of Sanguisorba leaves show that 'O-I-Pul' was the leaves of S. Officinalis and S. tenuifolia var. alba.

  • For the investigation of medicinal resources in Crataegus species, a study was carried out to clarify the constituents in the leaves of Crataegus Pinnatifida var. pubescens (Rosaceae), of which fruits have been used to stomachic, digestive, astringent, analgesic, and cardiotonic, etc. as a folk medicine in Korea. From the n-BuOH fraction of MeOH extract two flavone glycosides, vitexin(apigenin-8-C-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside) and 2"-O-rhamnosyl vitexin(apigenin-8-C-$\alpha$-L-rhamnosyl-(1$\rightarrow$2)-$\beta$-D-glucopyrano side) were isolated and identified on the basis of their physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic evidences(UV, IR, NMR, FAB-Mass etc.) in comparision with authentic samples.amples.

  • The development of medicinal plants for cut plants and landscape plants were conducted through the literiture survey. The results were as follows: We selected 38 species of medicinal plants including 7 medicinal woody plants for cut plant and landscape plants from 450 medicinal plants. There were 8 species of Compositae, 4 species Ranunculaceae, 3 species Rosaceae and Umbelliferae, 2 species Polygonaceae and Campanulaceae respectively. The anthesis of Cornus officinalis, Magnolia denudata, Forsythia koreana of medicinal woody plants flowering before leaf spreading come to early than the anthesis of other medicinal plants. There were 4 species(11%) over 10cm of the flower diameter, 6 species(16%) over 5cm below 10cm, 19 species(50%) over 1cm below 5cm and 9 species(24%) 1cm below. In terms of flower color, 11 species(29%) were white, 9 species(24%) yellow, 6 pecies(16%) red, 5 species(13%) violet and 3 species(8%) were blue aided violet. In terms of the flowering by month, 12 species(32%) on July, 9 species(24%) on May, 6 species(16%) on June and August respectively, and 3 species(8%) on March. The most medicinal plants were propagated by division and seeding easily, but woody medicinal plants of 7 species of this study were propagated by cutting and grafting easily. The percentage of usage of parts of medicinal plants including woody medicinal plants was that roots were 20 species(53%), flowers 6 species(16%), fruits and all part of medicinal plants were 4 species(11%), and seeds and stem including leaves 2 species(5%) respectively.
