  • In this paper lead zirconate titanate transducers (PZT) are employed for damage detection of four reinforced concrete (RC) column specimens retrofitted with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) jackets. A major disadvantage of FRP jacketing in RC members is the inability to inspect visually if the concrete substrate is damaged and in such case to estimate the extent of damage. The parameter measured during uniaxial compression tests at random times for known strain values is the real part of the complex number of the Electromechanical Admittance (Conductance) of the sensors, obtained by a PXI platform. The transducers are placed in specific positions along the height of the columns for detecting the damage in different positions and carrying out conclusions for the variation of the Conductance in relation to the position the failure occurred. The quantification of the damage at the concrete substrate is achieved with the use of the root-mean-square-deviation (RMSD) index, which is evaluated for the corresponding strain values. The experimental results provide evidence that PZT transducers are sensitive to damage detection from an early stage of the experiment and that the use of PZT sensors for monitoring and detecting the damage of FRP-retrofitted reinforced concrete members, by using the Electromechanical Admittance (EMA) approach, can be a highly promising method.

  • In this study, a particle image velocimetry (PIV)-based pressure estimation method was investigated, with application to the wave-in-deck loading phenomenon. An experimental study was performed in a two-dimensional wave tank using a fixed deck structure under a focused wave, obtaining local pressures by pressure sensors, global loads by load cells, and instantaneous velocity fields using the PIV measurement technique. The PIV-based pressure estimation method was applied using the Euler equation as the governing equation, and the proper time step for the wave impact pressure was studied using the normalized root-mean-square deviation. The pressure estimation method showed good agreement for the local impact pressure in comparison with the measured pressure by the pressure sensors. However, some differences were observed in the peak pressure due to the limitations of the Euler equation and the sampling rate of the measurement system. Using the estimation method, the pressure fields during wave-in-deck loading were determined in the study, with an analysis of the mechanism of impact and negative pressure occurrence.

  • To study the effect of solvents and counterions in Z-DNA crystal of d(5BrC-G-5BrC-G-5BrC-G), we performed the local energy analysis and then molecular dynamics simulations. Since counterions raise serious caging problems in crystal simulations, it is very important to search for the possible positions before simulations. For this purpose, the local energy analysis was done for the whole crystal volume. It is shown from our simulation that counterions along with water molecules play a bridging role to bind adjacent oligomers so as to form the crystal. In this crystal, each water molecule bound to Gua-N2H, either directly or indirectly, hydrates the adjacent anionic phosphate oxygen, and thus assists Gua to be in a syn position. From the simulation, the average root-mean-square deviation of allthe DNA heavy atom coordinates from the X-ray data is $0.99{\AA}$ . The bases are less deviated from the X-ray positions than the phosphates. The temperature factors from the simulation are consistent with those from the X-ray refinement, showing that the phosphates are more mobile than the bases.

  • This study presents a numerical investigation on the sensitivity of electromechanical (EM) impedance responses to inner damaged concrete of a prestressed anchorage zone. Firstly, the Ottosen yield criterion is selected to simulate the plasticity behavior of the concrete anchorage zone under the compressive loading. Secondly, several overloading cases are selected to analyze inner damage formations in the concrete of the anchorage zone. Using a finite element (FE) model of the anchorage zone, the relationship between applied forces and stresses is analyzed to illustrate inner plasticity regions in concrete induced by the overloading. Thirdly, EM impedance responses of surface-mounted PZT (lead-zirconate-titanate) sensors are numerically acquired before and after concrete damage occurrence in the anchorage zone. The variation of impedance responses is estimated using the RMSD (root-mean-square-deviation) damage metric to quantify the sensitivity of the signals to inner damaged concrete. Lastly, a novel PZT skin, which can measure impedance signatures in predetermined frequency ranges, is designed for the anchorage zone to sensitively monitor the EM impedance signals of the inner damaged concrete. The feasibility of the proposed method is numerically evaluated for a series of damage cases of the anchorage zone. The results reveal that the proposed impedance-based method is promising for monitoring inner damaged concrete in anchorage zones.

  • In this study, machine learning (ML) techniques were used to model surveillance test data of nuclear power plants from an international database of the ASTM E10.02 committee. Regression modeling was conducted using various techniques, including Cubist, XGBoost, and a support vector machine. The root mean square deviation of each ML model for the baseline dataset was less than that of the ASTM E900-15 nonlinear regression model. With respect to the interpolation, the ML methods provided excellent predictions with relatively few computations when applied to the given data range. The effect of the explanatory variables on the transition temperature shift (TTS) for the ML methods was analyzed, and the trends were slightly different from those for the ASTM E900-15 model. ML methods showed some weakness in the extrapolation of the fluence in comparison to the ASTM E900-15, while the Cubist method achieved an extrapolation to a certain extent. To achieve a more reliable prediction of the TTS, it was confirmed that advanced techniques should be considered for extrapolation when applying ML modeling.

  • In this paper, we demonstrate the neutron attenuation of dry cask shielding materials using the S670e helium-4 detector manufactured by Arktis Radiation Ltd. In particular, two materials expected to be applied to the TN-32 dry cask manufactured by ORANO Korea and KORAD-21 by the Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KORAD) were utilized. The measured neutron attenuation was compared with our Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport simulation results, and the difference is given as the root mean square (RMS). For the fast neutron case, a rapid decline in neutron counts was observed as a function of increasing material thickness, exhibiting an exponential relationship. The discrepancy between the experimentally acquired data and simulation results for the fast neutron was maintained within a 2.3% RMS. In contrast, the observed thermal neutron count demonstrated an initial rise, attained a maximum value, and exhibited an exponential decline as a function of increasing thickness. In particular, the discrepancy between the measured and simulated peak locations for thermal neutrons displayed an RMS deviation of approximately 17.3-22.4%. Finally, the results suggest that a minimum thickness of 5 cm for Li-6 is necessary to achieve a sufficiently significant cross-section, effectively capturing incoming thermal neutrons within the dry cask.

  • This study investigates the change of flow characteristics over 10 Asian river basins in the past 30 years (1976-2005). The variation is estimated from The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model outputs based on reanalysis data which was bias-corrected for Asian monsoon reagion. The model was firstly calibrated and validated using observed data for daily streamflow. Four statistical criteria were applied to evaluate the model performance, including Coefficient of determination (R2), Nash - Sutcliffe model efficiency coeffi cient (NSE), Root mean square error-observations standard deviation ratio (RSR), and Percentage Bias (PBIAS). Then parameters of the model were applied for the historical period 1976-2005. The estimates show a temporal non-considerable increasing rate of daily streamflow in most of the basins over the past 30 years. The difference of monthly discharge becomes more significant during the months in the wet season (June to September) in all basins. The seasonal runoff shows significant difference in Summer and Autumn, when the rainfall intensity is higher. The line showing averaged runoff/rainfall ratio in all basins is sharp, presenting high variation of seasonal runoff/rainfall ratio from season to season.

  • This study was conducted to develop stem volume models for the volume estimation of Quercus glauca Thunb. in Jeju Island, Republic of Korea. Furthermore, this study validated the developed stem volume models using an independent dataset. A total of 167 trees were measured for their diameter at breast height (DBH), total height and stem volume using non-destructive sampling methods. Eighty percent of the dataset was used for the initial model development while the remaining 20% was used for model validation. The performance of the different models was evaluated using the following fit statistics: standard error of estimate (SEE), mean bias absolute mean deviation (AMD), coefficient of determination (R2), and root mean square error (RMSE). The AMD of the five models from the different DBH classes were determined using the validation dataset. Model 5 (V = aDbHc), which estimates volume using DBH and total height as predicting variables, had the best SEE (0.02745), AMD (0.01538), R2 (0.97603) and RMSE (0.02746). Overall, volume models with two independent variables (DBH and total height) performed better than those with only one (DBH) based on the model evaluation and validation. The models developed in this study can provide forest managers with accurate estimations for the stem volumes of Quercus glauca in the subtropical forests of Jeju Island, Korea.
