  • Aluminum rolling stocks have been developed for six years in Korea and commercial trainsets are being constructed by the carbuilder. Aluminum alloys are sensitive to various imperfections. In this paper, damages and failures of the aluminum carbody taking place during the process of development are investigated and accumulated data are released. Also, remedies for the failures are suggested and design changes are introduced. It is expected that all informations can contribute to construction of reliable and safe aluminum rolling stocks.

  • MIG or TIG welding has been the most popular welding process for joining aluminum alloy structures. However, porosity, hot crack and distortion were serious problems in inert gas fusion welding. Since FSW(Friction Stir Welding) was invented by TWI in 1991, it has been the powerful candidate for solving the problems of inert gas welding. In this paper, the principle and characteristics of FSW is introduced and its application to rolling stocks is presented to make basis for future development in production technology of aluminum rolling Stocks.

  • In this paper, the level of service (LOS) is defined for high-speed railway links and rolling stocks. Based on this LOS, how to manage high-speed railway facility is also suggested. The LOS is divided into 6 levels from A to F. The measurement of effectiveness (MOE) for railway links is derived from the relationship between a total delay time and a railway link utilization ratio. Another MOE, volume over capacity (V/C), is also proposed. On the other hand, the LOS for high-speed railway rolling stocks is based on the density of people in a rolling stock. Above all, LOS D is defined to the total number of seats. Then, LOS A is 50% of the LOS D, LOS B is 70% of the LOS D, LOS C is 90% of the LOS D and LOS D~F is defined as the maximum seats and standing people at the level of each. Finally, a method to manage high-speed railway links and rolling stocks is proposed in order to keep the level of service at the target by the government.

  • In this study, collision accident scenarios are derived for crashworthy design of rolling stocks because the detailed guidelines to complement domestic safety regulations with respect to collision accidents of rolling stocks are under preparation. Through this study, several collision accident scenarios are broadly investigated for those of advanced countries like USA, UK and EU. Next, the basic engineering considerations which are necessary to derive the collision accident scenarios are reviewed and analysed in some details. Finally, two collision accident scenarios are derived considering the circumstances of domestic railroads.

  • Recently, a large amount of waste has been occurred from electric motor units (EMUs) due to the excess of their duration or the exchange of interior. In Korea, most of waste has been treated by incineration or landfill because the special treatment system of disused EMUs has not been existed until now. The objective of this study is to investigate the international railroad cases for the efficient treatment of disused EMUs. Japanese railroad makes an effort to enhance the recycling efficiency of rolling stocks such as the use of recycling materials or the development of recycling technology. Also, Europe has decided to treat the disused rolling stocks considering the inspection of their conditions and the increase of management cost. Therefore, in the future, it will be necessary to improve the domestic regulations related to the duration of rolling stocks and to develop the recycling technology of interior preferentially.

  • Due to sustainable development, international environmental regulations have been reinforced continuously. Especially, Kyoto protocol related to energy consumption affects to national production system seriously. Even if railroad is the most environmental- friendly transportation, it is necessary to improve its environment. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a representative tool to evaluate the environment impacts of a product. In the EU's railroad companies, the recycling efficiency and the waste emissions of rolling stocks have improved considering their environment impacts with LCA from a design step. Also, the LCA system of Korean electric motor units has been developed to build an environmentally sound railroad as one of national transportation core technology R&D projects. Therefore, the introduction of LCA will be required to decrease environmental impacts released from rolling stocks in the future.

  • The purpose of this research is to setup the design procedure of low noise rolling stocks. Noise sources are identified at a field test, and the contribution of noise sources to each part of car interior is ensured by sound intensity measurement technique. Added material to each section of the carbody makes it possible to identify absorption or reflection performance of each part to the anterior random noise. Such experimental tests to the exterior noise intruding through the floor represent that the best countermeasure on the floor is to implement reflecting material which can properly interfere noise. Design procedure of low noise rolling stocks is set through several experiments.

  • Some design technologies of AC traction motor for rolling stocks are presented. AC Traction motors for rolling stocks are operated in worst conditions such as frequent mechanical vibrations, compact design with limited mounting space, severe thermal stress at outside, driven with nonsinusoidal voltage waveform inverters, and so on. Therefore, design procedures must be carefully investigated in the viewpoint of theoritically and practical use. Design procedure contains, the motor size determination, electromagnetic circuit design, insulation system design, vibrations and thermal expansion of rotor bars, temperature rise, as well as output characteristics.

  • Stainless rolling stocks are usually fabricated by spot welding process without painting. Indentation on the surface of the car body after spot welding injures the beauty of the stainless rolling stocks. In this study, electrode tips to reduce the indentation are developed and applied to the actual spot welding works. The developed tips are composed of head, nut hole far cooling water, body and resistance material. They provide large surface contact area with the base materials during spot welding and enhance the current density by necking. Experimental results using the developed tips show that small indentation and sufficient tensile shear strength is produced due to large contact area and enhanced current density.

  • The maintenance effect is a peculiar factor applied to repairable systems such as rolling stocks. Conventional statistical analysis for failure times takes into account one of the two following extreme assumptions, namely, the state of the system after maintenance is either as "good as new" (GAN, perfect maintenance model) or as "bad as old" (BAO, minimal maintenance model). Most of the papers concerning the stochastic behavior of railroad systems assume two types of maintenance: perfect and minimal maintenance. However, Lee, Kim & Lee (2008) analyzed the failure data of a door system in Metro EMU and the effect of preventive maintenance was imperfect. It is seen that the imperfect maintenance is of great significance in practice. This article describes how to deal with the maintenance effect in reliability studies of rolling stocks. Maintenance policies under imperfect maintenance are described and the method is proposed to evaluate their performance.
