  • Rolling contact ball bearings are utilized almost exclusively for liquid propellant rocket engine turbopump. Turbopump ball bearings are required to endure high speed and high load for a poor lubricated condition in cryogenic environment. To evaluate bearing heat generation performance, friction torque is investigated as a function of rotation speed, bearing load and cooling flow rate through an experimental study using water coolants. Radial and axial loads are simultaneously applied to the test bearing by gas pressurized cylinder rod. Endurance performance of bearing has been also verified under the bearing required load for operating condition during total accumulated test time 2,100 sec.

  • In this paper, the friction and wear characteristics of contact type sealing unit far a water turbine have been presented. The sealing unit for a small hydropower generation is to stop a leakage of circulating water from an outside of an impeller to an inside of a rolling bearing. The friction heating between a seal ring and a seal seat may radically increase a surface temperature in which increase a power loss and wear on the rubbing surface. The surface wear strongly affect to the seal life of a mechanical face seal. In this study, the hardness of a stainless steel in which is a heat-treated is 892.8 in Victors hardness and the hardness of silicone carbide of SiC is 714.1 in Victors hardness. The surface hardness of a heat-treated stainless steel is 25% high compared with that of a ceramic material of SiC. The contact modes of rubbing surfaces are a dry friction, a water film friction and a mixed friction that is contaminated by a dust, silt, and moistures, etc. These two factors of a contact rubbing modes and a material property are very important parameters on the tribological performance such as a friction and wear between a seal ring and a seal seat in primary sealing unit. The experimental result shows that the surface hardness of a seal material is very important on the friction coefficient and a wear volume. Thus, the results recommend higher hardness of a seal material, which may reduce a friction loss and increase a wear life of primary seal components.

  • In the present study, the residual stresses can have a significant on the life of structural engineering components. Residual stresses are created by the surface treatment such as shot peening or deep rolling. The objective of this experimental investigation is to study the influence of friction and wear characteristics due to residual stress under dry sliding condition. Friction and wear data were obtained with a specially designed tribometer. Test specimens were made of SUP9(leaf spring material) after they were created residual stress by shot peening treatment. Residual stress profiles were measured at surface by means of the X-ray diffraction. Sliding tests were carried out different contact pressure and same sliding velocity 0.035m/s(50rpm). Leaf spring assembly test used to strain gauge sticked on leaf spring specimen in order to measure interleaf friction of leaf spring. Therefore, we were obtained hysteresis curve. As the residual stresses of surfaces increased, coefficient of friction and wear volume are decreased, but the residual stresses of surfaces are high, and consequently wear volume do not decreased. Coefficient of friction obtained from leaf spring assembly test is lower than that obtained from sliding test. From the results, structural engineering components reduce coefficient of friction and resistant wear in order to have residual stresses themselves.

  • In order to reduce resistance torque and energy loss, minimizing friction between race surface and rolling elements of a bearing is necessary. Recently, to reduce friction in bearing element, solid lubricant coating for the bearing raceway surface has been receiving much attention. Considering the operating conditions of real bearings, verifying the effect of solid lubricant coatings under extreme conditions of high load that is more than 1 GPa is necessary. In this study, we evaluated the friction and wear characteristics of SUJ2 bearing steels deposited by carbon-based coatings (Si-DLC, ta-C), $MoS_2$ and graphite. In case of $MoS_2$ and graphite coatings, different surface treatments were applied to the coatings to verify the effect of surface treatment. A pin-on-disc type tribotester was used to evaluate the tribological characteristics of the coatings. It was possible to quantitatively estimate the friction and wear characteristics of solid lubricant under dry and lubrication conditions. The carbon-based coatings improved the friction and wear properties of SUJ2 bearing steels under the high load condition, but $MoS_2$ and graphite coatings were not suitable for high load conditions due to its low hardness. Different friction and wear behaviors were found for different substrate surface treatment method. Also, it was confirmed that solid lubricant coatings had a more positive effect than just applying the lubricant for improving the tribological characteristics.

  • In this paper, the design of experiment with two-way factorial design was adopted and from that, optimum values of welding variables including the welding speed and rotation speed were found to improve the strength of AZ31 magnesium alloy sheets joined by the friction stir technique. Tool with shoulder diameter of 12 mm and pin diameter of 3.5 mm was used. Also the welding direction was aligned with the material rolling direction, and dimensions of the AZ31 magnesium alloy sheets were $100{\times}100{\times}2mm$. Conditions of rotation speed were 1000, 1100 and 1200 rpm and those of welding speed were 200, 300 and 400 mm/min. As far as this work is concerned, the optimal conditions for friction stir joint were predicted as the rotation speed of 1200 rpm and welding speed of 200 mm/min.

  • Wheel/rail contact is a significant problem in railway dynamics. In this paper, the wheel/rail contact is examined analytically and numerically as a contact problem between two cylinders where torque and friction have effect. Furthermore, the contact of a real wheel and rail is investigated numerically where the normal and shear force act. This study demonstrates that the wheel/rail contact is a process that generates traction force through creep where rolling and sliding occurs simultaneously depending on the shape of the wheel and rail, and the friction coefficient between them.

  • This paper investigates the tensile properties of the friction stir welded joints of Al 7075-T651 aluminum plate according to the welding conditions. A 7075-T651 aluminum alloy plate with a thickness of 6.0 mm was used in this investigation. For the friction stir welding (FSW) process, a tool with shoulder diameter of 20 mm and probe diameter of 9 mm was used. The rotation speed and traverse speed conditions were changed in this study, the other welding conditions are constant. The welding direction was aligned with the material rolling direction, and dimension of the FSW plate were $250{\times}100{\times}6\;mm$. As far as this work is concerned, the optimal FSW conditions are determined as the rotation speed, 600 rpm and traverse speed 0.8 mm/sec or the rotation speed, 800 rpm and traverse speed 0.5 mm/sec.

  • A CFPBS (Cone-type Friction Pendulum Bearing System) was developed to control the acceleration delivered to a structure to prevent the damage and degradation of critical communication equipment during earthquakes. This study evaluated the isolation performance of the CFPBS by numerical analysis. The CFPBS was manufactured in the shape of a cone differenced with the existing FPS (Friction Pendulum System), and a pattern was engraved on the friction surface. The natural frequencies of the CFPBS were evaluated from a free-vibration test with a seismic isolator system consisting of 4 CFPBS. To confirm the earthquake-resistant performance, a numerical analysis program was prepared using the equation of the CFPBS induced from the equations of motion. The equation reported by Tsai for the rolling-type seismic isolation bearings was proposed to design the equation of the CFPBS. Artificial seismic waves that satisfy the maximum earthquake scale of the Korean Building Code-Structural (KBC-2005) were created and verified to review the earthquake-resistant performance of the CFPBS by numerical analysis. The superstructural mass of the CFPBS and the skew angle of friction surface were considered for numerical analysis with El Centro NS, Kobe NS and artificial seismic waves. The CFPBS isolation performance evaluation was based on the numerical analysis results, and comparative analysis was performed between the results from numerical analysis and simplified theoretical equation under the same conditions. The validity of numerical analysis was verified from the shaking table test.

  • An abrasion due to continuous friction between a work roll and strip causes the mass of the work roll to be unbalanced in the rolling process. We developed a mathematical model for the rolling mill considering the unbalanced mass and verified the model experimentally. The work roll was approximated as a rigid rotor with eccentricity, and the effect of the unbalanced mass on chatter vibration was investigated. The joint forces computed by quasistatic analysis were applied to the work roll in the rolling mill. Transient responses were obtained, and frequency analysis was performed by solving equations of motion using a direct integration method. Horizontal vibrations were more strongly affected by eccentricity than vertical vibrations. In the horizontal direction, a small eccentricity of 1% of the work roll radius considerably increased the amplitude of the chatter frequency.

  • Rapid increase of refrigeration and air-conditioning systems 9r & a systems) in modern industries brings attention to the urgency of research & development as a core technology in the area. And it is required to the compatibility problem of r & a systems to alternative refrigerant for the protection of environment. The, it is requested to study the lubrication characteristics of refrigerant compressor which is the core technology in the r & a systems. The study of lubrication characteristics in the critical sliding component is essential for the design of refrigerant compressor. Therefore, theoretical investigation of the lubrication characteristics of rotary compressor for r & a systems is studied. The newton-Raphson method is used for the EHL analysis between vane and rolling piston in the rotary compressor. The results show that the rotational speed of a shaft and the discharge pressure influence significantly the friction force between vane and rolling piston. This results give important basic data for the further lubrication analysis and design of a rotary compressor.
