  • Roll to roll (R2R) manufacturing process, also known as 'web processing', has been tried for producing electronic devices on a flexible plastic or metal foil. To increase the performance and productivity the R2R process, effective control and on-line supervision for web quality becomes very important. Wrinkle is one of the defects, which is incurred due to compressive stresses. A system for on-line measurement of wrinkle is developed using area scan camera and machine vision laser. The 2D image, obtained by area scan camera, is produced by Gaussian regression method to characterize the wrinkle on a transparent web. The experiment proves that 0.3mm wrinkle height can be measured successfully with 74fps.

  • In the steel industries, direct rolling process for production of strip from molten metal has been investigated to simplify processes, to minimize energy consumption, and to improve quality of the strip. In this study, two kinds of practicable scale cooling rollers are proposed. And heat transfer analysis of pool region and cooling roller considering flow of molten metal and roll rotation respectively using the finite element method are performed to obtain the proper initial condition and to observe cooling characteristics of cooling roller. From the results, variations of solidification final points and temperature distribution in roller are observed quantitatively according to roll rotation.

  • Previously fabricated electronic devices were used for vacuum manufacturing processes such as conventional semiconductor manufacturing. However, they are difficult to apply to continuous processes such as roll-to-roll printing, which results in very high device manufacturing and processing costs. Therefore, many developers have been interested in applying continuous processes to contact printing or noncontact printing technologies and they proposed various continuous printing techniques instead of conventional batch coating. In this paper, we proposed improved gravure offset printing process as one of the contact printing technique. We used etching pattern geometry with soft core blanket roll for printing of ultra fine line below the 10um.Using this technique we obtained flexible metal grid mesh film as transparent conductive film.

  • The front end bending(FEB) behavior of material that usually occurs in plate rolling is investigated. In this paper, a rollbite profile map approach that systematically predicts the FEB slope is presented. It is based on the concurrent use of shape factors and reduction ratios to ensure an accurate value of the FEB and its slope. In order to obtain the unit roll-bite profile map, the FEB slope model was decomposed into a temperature deviation component and a roll-velocity deviation component. By mapping the results of a series of finite element analyses to the unit functions of the roll-bite profile map, it was possible to obtain a realistic prediction of the FEB slope applicable to an actual plate rolling process. Thereby, the usefulness of the present approach is clearly demonstrated.

  • This paper presents how to approximate an optimal shape of roll bending process in the fabrication of a curved shell plate. The roll bending process usually makes the cylindrical or conic shape from an initial flat plate. It means that the final shape is developable or its surface representation has zero Gaussian curvature. The fabrication shape is important in order to find process parameters of roil bending. An optimal concept is used to determine the developable fabrication shape which is in the closest proximity to the design surface or the given shell plate and is subject to developability. The results and the efficiency of this algorithm are evaluated by applying to some shell plates. Furthermore, the fabrication shape will be fundamental information for other process parameters of roll bending such as the vertical displacement of the center roller and the rolling directions.

  • In this paper, a method for prediction of spread is proposed to design proper roll profile taking into account spread in shape rolling of angle bar. The effect of the process variables on spread, such as draught ratio, bending angle and aspect ratio, is analyzed by FE-analysis and response surface method (RSM). Roll profiles for equal angle bar are designed with the spread predicted by the regression equation. Effectiveness of the designed roll profiles are verified by FE-analysis in which the flange length, strain distribution, mean strain and roll torque are compared with those by Geuze. Finally, the proposed method is applied to the design of roll profile for unequal angle bar. As a result, the final product can be obtained within the allowable tolerance of ${\pm}0.5mm$ in length. Therefore, it is found that the prediction of spread can improve the efficiency of design roll profile in shape rolling of angle bar.

  • Sandwich structures, which are composed of a thick core between two faces, are commonly used in many engineering applications because they combine high stiffness and strength with low weight. Depending on the sheets by a rolling process, which is a more efficient and economical approach compared to other types of processes, has become an increasingly important subject of study. In this paper, we made a roll forming machine which progressive forming possible and force measurement for a roll forming of the sheet metal forming. And we designed a roll molding that arrayed of embossing size 3mm in diameter fabricate micro dimple inner structure plate. We carried out forming experiment such as array change and thickness to sts304 sheet. Ultimately, this research developed inner structure plate of high stiffness.

  • Incremental forming path to manufacture a thick concave steel plate using the line array roll set is designed. To find the optimum forming path, the forming processes are simulated by the finite element method. A general-purpose commercial software, MSC MARC is used. A modeling with 8-node hexahedral elastic-plastic solid is performed to predict accurate springback and the analysis process was composed of 18 passes. The proposed forming paths are verified through experiments carried out in the prototype line array roll set. It is found that the process can be successfully applied to the fabrication of the dual curvature ship hull plate.

  • An integrated finite element-based model is presented for the prediction of the three dimensional tran-sient thermo-mechanical behavior of the work roll in hot strip rolling. The model is comprised of basic finite element models which are incorporated into an iterative solution procedure to deal with the inter-dependence between the thermo-mechanical behavior of the strip and that of the work roll which arises from roll-strip contact as well as with the interdependence between the thermal and mechanical behav-ior Demonstrated is the capability of the model to reveal the detailed aspects of the thermo-mechanical behavior and to reflect the effect of various process parameters.

  • In hot strip rolling, a capability for precisely predicting roll force is crucial for sound process control. In the past, on-line prediction models have been developed mostly on the basis of Orowan's theory and its variation. However, the range of process conditions in which desired prediction accuracy could be achieved was rather limited, mainly due to many simplifying assumptions inherent to Orowan's theory. As far as the prediction accuracy is concerned, a rigorously formulated finite element(FE) process model is perhaps the best choice. However, a FE process model in general requires a large CPU time, rendering itself inadequate for on-line purpose. In this report, we present a FE-based on-line prediction model applicable to precision process control in a finishing mill(FM). Described was an integrated FE process model capable of revealing the detailed aspects of the thermo-mechanical behavior of the roll-strip system. Using the FE process model, a series of process simulation was conducted to investigate the effect of diverse process variables on some selected non-dimensional parameters characterizing the thermo-mechanical behavior of the strip. Then, it was shown that an on-line model for the prediction of roll force could be derived on the basis of these parameters. The prediction accuracy of the proposed model was examined through comparison with measurements from the hot strip mill.
