  • If the withdrawal force of strand driven roll which is controlled with predetermined speed isn't distributed regularly in continuous casting process, mold level is changed cyclically and slab quality is not good. In this paper, both casting speed control and load sharing control algorithm of strand driven roll according to ratio which is set up by operator at same time is proposed. The proposed algorithm is to share the withdrawal force by following torque current of each driven roll as average torque current by changing speed reference of each driven roll motor. The load sharing control with anti-wind up for improvement transient state is adopted and the proposed algorithm is implemented in POSCO pilot caster.

  • Roll forming process is one of the most widely used processes in the world for forming metals. It can manufacture goods of the uniform cross section throughout the continuous processing. However, process analysis is very difficult because of the inherent complexity. Therefore, time is consuming and much money are needed for manufacturing goods. In order to overcome this difficulty, a new computational method based on the rigid-plastic finite element method is developed for the analysis of roll forming process. In this paper, the design of roll forming process and the simulation are performed to manufacture the upper member at under rail composed of three members. The cold rolled carbon steel sheet(SCP-1) is used in this simulation, and a flow stress equation is set up by conducting the tensile test. The upper member is designed using two types of design for a excellent design. Each types are simulated and compared with the strain distribution using SHAPE-RF software. In addition, the numerical magnitude of bow and camber which are the buckling phenomenon is estimated.

  • This paper discusses an application of mathematical programming techniques in the paper industry in determining optimal parent roll widths. Parent rolls are made from the reels produced at wide paper machines by slitting them to more manageable widths. The problem is finding a set of the slitting patterns that will minimize the trim loss involved in the sheeting operation. Two programming models, one linear and one mixed integer linear, are presented in this paper. Also presented are the computational experience, the model sensitivity, and the comparison of the optimal solutions with the simulated operational data.

  • We would like to generalize about trapezoidal fuzzy set and to calculate four operations based on the Zadeh's extension principle for two generalized trapezoidal fuzzy sets. And we roll up triangular fuzzy numbers and generalized triangular fuzzy sets into it. Since triangular fuzzy numbers and generalized triangular fuzzy sets are generalized trapezoidal fuzzy sets, we need no more the separate painstaking calculations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division for two such kinds once the operations are done for generalized trapezoidal fuzzy sets.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the muscle activity of the abdominal and lumbar multifidus during unilateral prone hip extension on the floor and on a round foam roll. Fifteen healthy participants were recruited. They were instructed to perform a unilateral hip extension on the floor and on a round foam roll in the prone position. Surface electromyography (EMG) signals were recorded from bilateral lumbar multifidus (LM), external oblique (EO), and internal oblique (IO) muscles. A paired t-test was used to compare muscle activity, with the level of significance set at ${\alpha}$=.05. The results showed that bilateral LM, EO, IO EMG activity during right-hip extension on a round foam roll was greater than that on the floor, and EMG activity of bilateral LM, right EO, and left IO during left-hip extension on a round foam roll was greater than that on the floor (p<.05). These findings suggest that the unilateral hip-extension exercise on a round foam roll can be used to activate the lumbar multifidus and abdominal oblique muscles and causes a different increasing pattern between the two lifting sides.

  • In order to make a doubly-curved sheet metal effectively, a sheet metal forming process has been developed by adopting the flexibility of the incremental forming process and the principle of bending deformation which causes slight deformation in thickness. The developed process is an unconstrained forming process with no holder. For this study, the experimental equipment is set up with the roll set which consists of two pairs of support rolls and one center roll. In the experiments using aluminum sheets, it is found that the curvature of the formed sheet metal is determined by controlling the distance between supporting rolls in pairs and the forming depth of the center roll and it also depends on the thickness of the sheet metal. In order to check the effect of process parameters on the generation of sheet metal curvatures in this process, the orthogonal array is adopted. From the experimental results, among the process parameters, the distance between supporting rolls in pairs along the direction of one principal radius of curvature as well as the forming depth and the thickness of the material is shown to influence the generation of curvature in the same direction significantly. That is, the other distance between supporting rolls in pairs which are not located in the same direction of one principal radius of curvature, does not have an significant effect on the generation of the curvature in that direction. It mainly affects the generation of curvature in its own direction with the forming depth and the thickness of the material.

  • Rolling speed, roll gap, and cooling pattern in hot strip finishing mill process should be determined before inserting strip into roll. Such parameters are initially calculated by a mathematical set-up model. The technique to find adequate roll speed via a mathematical model has inherently limit because required working conditions are various and rolling process is nonlinear. To improve the accuracy of initial rolling speed for a finishing mill, this paper suggests a correction technology for initial rolling speed. The proposed method was implemented in hot strip mill process. As the results, the magnitude of width error in strip head-end part caused by excessive strip tension was decreased remarkably.

  • Conventional automatic transmission system includes a hydrodynamic torque converter to transfer engine torque from an engine crank shaft to a rotatable input members, which are of complex design permitting them to serve several functions. These are clutches or brakes which couple the rotatable input member to member of a planetary gear set. The annulus gear for an automatic transmission is a monolithic gear having a set of gear teeth formed on an inner surface which is coupling with a set of planetary gear. In this study, the flow forming method is applied to the manufacturing of the annulus gear. This cold forming is proper method in order to manufacture dimensionally precise and round hollow components such as annulus gear. By pre-calculated amount of wall thickness reduction, the seamless tube of SAE1026 is compressed above its yield strength, plastically deformed and made to flow in several roll passes. According to this study, the desired geometry of the annulus gear can be achieved when the outer diameter and the thickness of the tube are properly decreased by compressed roll passes and the available material volume is easily forced to flow longitudinally over the shape of mandrel.

  • The multi-point forming (MPF) process for three-dimensional curved sheet metal has been developed as an alternative to the conventional die forming process since MPF allows the manufacturing of various shapes using one die set and reduce the cost of production. However, the MPF process cannot provide high quality products yet due to defects occurring in the sheet such as dimples and wrinkles. It can also lead to economic loss because of long tool setup time and additional machining required outside of the sheet formed area. In this study, a new sheet metal forming method, called flexible roll forming (FRF), is proposed to solve the problems of existing processes for three-dimensional curved sheet metal. This progressive process utilizes adjusting rods, as well as upper and lower flexible rollers as forming tools. In contrast with the existing processes, FRF can reduce the additional production costs because of the possible blank size for the part longitudinal direction, which is unrestricted. In this research, methods and procedures of the flexible roll forming technology are described. Numerical forming simulations of representative three-dimensional curved sheet products are also carried out to demonstrate the feasibility of this technology.
