Current seismic codes (e.g. the NTC08 Italian code and the EC8 European code) adopt a performance-based approach for both the design of new buildings and the assessment of existing ones. Different limit states are considered by verifying structural members as well as non structural elements and facilities which have generally been neglected in practice. The key role of non structural elements on building performance has been shown by recent earthquakes (e.g. L'Aquila 2009) where, due to the extensive damage suffered by infills, partitions and ceilings, a lot of private and public buildings became unusable with consequent significant socio-economic effects. Furthermore, the collapse of infill panels, particularly in the case of out-of-plane failure, represented a serious source of risk to life safety. This paper puts forward an infill model capable of accounting for the effects arising from prior in-plane damage on the out-of-plane capacity of infill panels. It permits an assessment of the seismic performance of existing RC buildings with reference to both structural and non structural elements, as well as of their mutual interaction. The model is applied to a building type with RC framed structure designed only to vertical loads and representative of typical Italian buildings. The influence of infill on building performance and the role of the out-of-plane response on structural response are also discussed.

Building-integrated photovoltaic(BIPV) systems can operate as a multi-functional building components, which generates electricity and serves as part of building envelope. It can be regarded as a new architectural elements, adding to the building's aesthetics. Besides of these benefits, the application of PV systems into school buildings tends to play an important role in energy education to students. In this context, this study aims to analyse the applicability of PV systems into school buildings. For an existing school building, four types of BIPV designs were developed; rooftops, wall-attached, wall-mounted with angle, and sunshading device. Based on energy modeling of those BIPV systems, the whole 60.1kWp rated PV installation is expected to yield about 65.6MWh of electricity, that is about 50% more than the annual electricity consumption of the school, 44MWh. It was also found that the applicability of the PV systems into the school building was very high, and the rooftop systems with the optimized angle was the most efficient in energy production, followed by sunshading, wall-mounted with angle and wall-attached. It concludes that school buildings have a reasonable potential to apply PV systems in the aspects of building elements and electricity production.
A railway station appears in the form of multi-use station building where cultural and commercial elements such as shopping and leisure are mixed, getting out of simple space configuration oriented to the space for station work, where a passenger stays for a little while. Now, a railway station is a place expanded to the inside of city, and builds a relationship with urban fabric, and therefore it should receive the social change in the time together with the surrounding infrastructure, and should inevitably form the urban environment. And it should become the 'Place' so as to be capable of playing a role of buffer and a role of regional gateway landmark by making users included in the inside through various uses with regard to the dispersed urban connection. Hence, this study is intended to examine the planning through the place branding of railway station. In the method of research, the characteristics that place branding had was investigated, and an analysis was made on the basis of 10 place branding strategic elements and 6 railway design guidelines. And it was intended to set a direction in which the existing place branding strategy could be applied to the railway station, and was intended to derive the place branding planning strategic elements of railway station. Hence, the planning can be classified into the following 5 kinds in connection with railway station. First, identity should be embodied through the strategy of constructing the symbolic image of railway station. Second, a role of mediating variously approaching flows in the city should be played. Third, the spatial layout of railway station, which can increase the efficiency of use, should be arranged. Fourth, special characteristics should be intensified through creative storytelling that stimulates emotion. Fifth, an organic change is gradually necessary for sustainability. These planning elements should be applied in harmonious combination. Therefore, a new railway station can be maded by building identity and placeness and by giving the value through these planning directions in the future.

Egyptian construction firms (ECF) started recently to adopt quality management system (QMS) as a way to develop and improve their performance as previous studies have shown. However, considering all the firm's aspects in a competitive way is a crucial process for the ECF's culture. This research is trying to indicate the role of the QMS implementation in measuring performance (MP) through developing a model for measuring performance at the organizational level, and to explore its impact on the organizations that adopt QMS. This model is based on specific elements and their related indicators which have been derived from national approaches and models of MP. This model determines the performance level (PL) of the organization that is measured by means of a point system. Weights of the elements in the point system considered both the elements' importance in the international models and its real practice in the ECFs. This model has been validated using another questionnaire and the majority of surveyed experts agreed that the proposed model can be applied effectively.

Buildings form interior space when part of an external environment is limited by a physical surface. And, the interior space forms an appearance of building when space-defining elements, such as floor, wall, and roof. An appearance or a form of building has a lot of meanings depending on the physical and psychological conditions, as well as symbolism. Especially, the prevailing meaning of form in the modern age was, "Form follows function," was quite different from the meaning of form in the architectural era of Louis I. Kahn, who asserted "Form always supercedes function," when functional modernism was still existed even after some 50 years later. Existing studies on Louis I. Kahn usually analyzed his architectural terminology and philosophical concepts of Centrality, Light, Order, Form, and Design; or they were focused on an overall plane and the principle of composition. The purposes of this study are: (1) to investigate how the formal composition characteristics of building are expressed on skylights; and (2) to demonstrate that the formal composition characteristics of skylights plays an important role in constructing a whole structure of building in relation with other architectural elements.
Building simulation is used in a variety of sectors. In its early years, building simulation was mainly used in the design phase of a building for basic functions. Recently, however, it has become increasingly important during the operating phase, for commissioning and facility management. Most building simulation tools are used to estimate the thermal environment and energy consumption performance, and hence, they require the inputting of hourly weather data. A building simulation used for prediction should take into account the use of standard weather data. Weather data, which is used as input for a building simulation, plays a crucial role in the prediction performance, and hence, the selection of appropriate weather data is considered highly important. The present study proposed a technique for generating real-time weather data files, as opposed to the standard weather data files, which are required for running the building simulation. The forecasted weather elements provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), the elements produced by the calculations, those utilizing the built-in functions of Energy Plus, and those that use standard values are combined for hourly input. The real-time weather data files generated using the technique proposed in the present study have been validated to compare with measured data and simulated data via EnergyPlus. The results of the present study are expected to increase the prediction accuracy of building control simulation results in the future.
In order to clarify the impacts of thermal difference in atmospheric boundary layer due to the different sophistication of building information in Busan metropolitan areas, several numerical simulations were carried out. ACM (Albedo Calculation Model) and WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) was applied for estimating albedo and meteorological elements in urban area, respectively. In comparison with coarse aggregated and small buildings, diurnal variation of albedo is highly frequent and its total value tend to be smaller in densely aggregated and tall buildings. Estimated TKE and sensible heat flux with sophisticatedly urban building parameterization is more resonable and valid values are mainly induced by urban building sophistication. The simulation results suggest that decreased albedo and increased roughness due to skyscraper plays an important role in the result of thermal change in atmospheric boundary layer.
During an earthquake, soils filter and send out the shaking to the building and simultaneously it has the role of bearing the building vibrations and transmitting them back to the ground. In other words, the ground and the building interact with each other. Hence, soil-structure interaction (SSI) is a key parameter that affects the performance of buildings during the earthquakes and is worth to be taken into consideration. Columns are one of the most crucial elements in RC buildings that play an important role in stability of the building and must be able to dissipate energy under seismic loads. Recent earthquakes showed that formation of plastic hinges in columns is still possible as a result of strong ground motion, despite the application of strong column-weak beam concept, as recommended by various design codes. Energy is dissipated through the plastic deformation of specific zones at the end of a member without affecting the rest of the structure. The formation of a plastic hinge in an RC column in regions that experience inelastic actions depends on the column details as well as soil-structure interaction (SSI). In this paper, 854 different scenarios have been analyzed by inelastic time-history analyses to predict the nonlinear behavior of RC columns considering soil-structure interaction (SSI). The effects of axial load, height over depth ratio, main period of soil and structure as well as different characteristics of earthquakes, are evaluated analytically by finite element methods and the results are compared with corresponding experimental data. Findings from this study provide a simple expression to estimate plastic hinge length of RC columns including soil-structure interaction.
A proper physical modeling of infilled building frame-foundation beam-soil mass interaction system is needed to predict more realistic and accurate structural behavior under static vertical loading. This is achieved via finite element method considering the superstructure, foundation and soil mass as a single integral compatible structural unit. The physical modelling is achieved via use of finite element method, which requires the use of variety of isoparametric elements with different degrees of freedom. The unbounded domain of the soil mass has been discretized with coupled finite-infinite elements to achieve computational economy. The nonlinearity of soil mass plays an important role in the redistribution of forces in the superstructure. The nonlinear behaviour of the soil mass is modeled using hyperbolic model. The incremental-iterative nonlinear solution algorithm has been adopted for carrying out the nonlinear elastic interaction analysis of a two-bay two-storey infilled building frame. The frame and the infill have been considered to behave in linear elastic manner, whereas the subsoil in nonlinear elastic manner. In this paper, the computational methodology adopted for nonlinear soil-structure interaction analysis of infilled frame-foundation-soil system has been presented.
The building frame and its foundation along with the soil on which it rests, together constitute a complete structural system. In the conventional analysis, a structure is analysed as an independent frame assuming unyielding supports and the interactive response of soil-foundation is disregarded. This kind of analysis does not provide realistic behaviour and sometimes may cause failure of the structure. Also, the conventional analysis considers infill wall as non-structural elements and ignores its interaction with the bounding frame. In fact, the infill wall provides lateral stiffness and thus plays vital role in resisting the seismic forces. Thus, it is essential to consider its effect especially in case of high rise buildings. In the present research work the building frame, infill wall, isolated column footings (open foundation) and soil mass are considered to act as a single integral compatible structural unit to predict the nonlinear interaction behaviour of the composite system under seismic forces. The coupled isoparametric finite-infinite elements have been used for modelling of the interaction system. The material of the frame, infill and column footings has been assumed to follow perfectly linear elastic relationship whereas the well known hyperbolic soil model is used to account for the nonlinearity of the soil mass.
