  • Numerical stability analysis of one-dimensional axial flow in solid rocket motors is performed based on the Euler equation coupled with an unsteady combustion equation of solid propellant. In order to check the numerical scheme, behavior of a standing wave in a closed tube is examined. A standing wave in solid rocket motor decays or grows depending on the total effect of propellant combustion, nozzle flow, and so on. The stability boundary of the fundamental mode standing wave is determined by changing one of the combustion parameters. In addition growth rates of the wave are calculated numerically in relatively low Mach number flow region for the motors with different port and nozzle throat diameters. The results obtained here agree well with the approximate solution. The same scheme is applied to a motor with shorter length and L*-instability is observed.

  • Stability rating of KSR-III rocket engine is conducted based on stability rating tests in the course of development of KSR-III rocket engine. Rocket engine is approved to have combustion stabilization ability when it can suppress the external perturbation or pressure oscillation with finite amplitude and recover the original stable combustion. Rocket engine in flight nay be perturbed with unexpectedly large amplitude and thus a designer should not only assure combustion stabilization ability of the engine but also quantify the stabilization capacity. For this, several quantitative parameters and their evaluation are introduced. To verify dynamic stability of KSR-III rocket engine, five stability rating tests have been conducted. Based on these test results, such parameters are quantified and thereby, the stabilization capacity of KSR-III rocket engine is evaluated.

  • This study introduce a newly developed program to calculate the combustion process of combustion chamber and gas generator of liquid rocket engine by use of Gibbs free energy minimization method based on chemical equilibrium. The simulation results of the new program and CEA code of NASA were compared and showed good agreement, thus proving the validity of the newly developed in-house program for combustion analysis.

  • A series of hybrid rocket combustion experiments were carried out with PMMA/GOx changing diameter and length of the disk installed at pre-chamber. The disk can generate vortex shedding flow and change flow conditions prior to entering the fuel grain which could also alter the combustion characteristics and pressure oscillations. The interaction of vortex shedding in the pre-chamber and small-scale vortices adjacent to burning surfaces by using combustion test.

  • Transient Analysis on heat transfer of rocket engine combustion chamber and wall temperature variation was carried out, especially, calculations of LOx/kerosene rocket engine with/without fuel film-cooling were conducted. Convective and radiative heat flux inside combustion chamber wall were calculated by the empirical equations for rocket engine combustion, and conduction of wall interior was calculated by numerical method with 2D axisymmetric grid. In this calculations the transient variations of wall temperature, the location changes of peak temperature and so on affected by film-cooling were analyzed.

  • In this paper, the main cause on excitation of the combustion instability which may occur in the hybrid rocket motor with a diaphragm was studied. Hybrid rocket motor propulsion tests considering various experimental conditions such as with a diaphragm or not, a diameter of diaphragm, oxidizer mass flow rate, fuel length, etc were performed, and the combustion visualization for the inside of a hybrid rocket motor with a diaphragm was performed. With these experimental results, it was confirmed that the main cause of a large excitation was the hole-tone, and it was shown that the hole-tone model can be predicted experimental primary pressure oscillation frequency quite well.

  • Hybrid rocket displays many different low frequency pressure oscillations during combustion. Thermal lag between solid and gas phase is the primary mechanism to trigger low frequency pressure oscillations of around 10Hz, and Helmholtz or $L^*$ mode also produces other types of low frequency oscillations above 10 Hz which is associated with the change in combustion volume. Since the flow characteristics in hybrid rocket is very similar to those in solid rocket combustion, it is not surprising to observe similar pressure oscillation behaviors. Experimental test shows that combustion pressure suddenly turns into to a big amplitude oscillation around 10Hz then followed by returning to an original pressure level after a short period combustion. Further investigations show that this instability is independent of the change in O/F ratio at all. One of the possible candidates is the vortex shedding dynamics over the backward step in the post combustion chamber. It is required to investigate the low frequency oscillation mechanism in the future study.

  • A series of combustion tests of a 30-tonf-class full scale liquid rocket thrust chamber under development has been carried out to verify its design. The test results revealed decent performance in the aspects of efficiency. The combustion stability is one of the most important parameters of liquid rocket engine in addition to the efficiency. Assessment tests of combustion stability must be accomplished to confirm the possibility of combustion instability due to spontaneous or external disturbances. The combustion stability rating tests of the full scale thrust chamber with temporary baffles made of stainless steel were carried out utilizing pulse guns to estimate combustion stability characteristics. The tests results show highly stable combustion stability characteristics. The outcome acquired from the present experimental study will be used to design an actively cooled baffle that can survive for the life time operation of the thrust chamber.
