Development Thermal Design Program to Predict Film Cooling Performance in Liquid Rocket Engine (로켓엔진의 막냉각 성능 예측을 위한 열설계 프로그램 개발)

  • A design program has been developed to predict film cooling performance in a liquid rocket engine combustion chamber. A thermal protecting effect of low mixture ratio gas has been analysed by CFD. A one-dimensional film cooling model based on the CFD results has been implemented in the previously developed design program of regenerative cooling. The predicted heat flux at the nozzle throat ranges from -16% to +28% when it is compared to the published measured data. The throat heat flux reduces by 36% when film cooling of 10% of fuel mass flow rate is applied.

  • System design parameters of gas generator cycle liquid rocket engines were investigated and compared in the present study. Characteristic velocity of combustor, pressure drop of combustor injector, exit pressure of pump, pump efficiency and specific power of turbine were considered as a system design parameter. The result shows the characteristic velocity is in the range of 1700-1770 m/s, pressure drop of combustor injector, 4-10 bar, pump exit pressure ratio to combustion pressure, 120-230%, pump efficiency, 60-80%, specific power of turbine, $0.28-0.58MW{\cdot}s/kg$.

  • A genetic algorithm (GA) has been employed to optimize the major design variables of the liquid rocket engine. Pressure of the main combustion chamber, nozzle expansion ratio and O/F ratio have been selected as design variables. The target engine has the open gas generator cycle using the LO2/RP-1 propellant. The gas properties of the combustion chamber have been obtained from CEA2 and the mass has been estimated using reference data. The objective function has been set as multi-objective function with the specific impulse and thrust to weight ratio using the weight method. The result shows about 4% improvement of the specific impulse and 23% increase of the thrust to weight ratio. The Pareto frontier line has been also obtained for various thrust requirements.

  • Conceptual design of RBCC (Rocket Based Combined Cycle) engine is performed through the thermodynamic cycle analysis. The engine is designed to take off at sea level and accelerate to Mach 8 at 30 km altitude. According to the flight speed, the engine operating modes are categorized into 3 modes : Ejectorjet (~ Mach 3), Ramjet (Mach 3~6), Scramjet (Mach 6~8). As a design result, the engine has a diameter of 1 m and a length of 6.7 m. In the prediction results, its maximum thrust is 16.5 ton. In Ramjet and Scramjet modes, design condition of the engine intake influence the engine thrust according to the flight speed.

  • The result of design review and arrangement of a combustion chamber test facility(CTF) and a turbo-pump real propellant test facility(TPTF) is briefly described. The development/qualification tests of combustion chamber and turbo-pump for 75ton-class liquid rocket engine will be performed in CTF and TPTF. The critical design of hydraulic-pneumatic system, control and data acquisition system, test stand cell, and auxiliary facilities in CTF and TPTF was performed.

  • Conceptual design and manufacturing scheme of a gas generator for 7 tonf class rocket engine were described. The combustion chamber pressure, O/F ratio, and total flow rate were decided to be 6 MPa, 0.321, and 1 kg/s respectively in consequence of the engine system design. Based on the parameters conceptual design of the gas generator was carried out and its outer dimension was about ${\Phi}100{\times}250mm$. Most parts of the gas generator to be jointed together by brazing or TIG welding and, if possible, the strength and leakproof tests are to be conducted in every step for checking the welding section.

  • The KSLV-II(Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II) which being a successor of the KSLV-I is a space launch vehicle capable of delivering 1.5 ton-class satellite into a low earth orbit. The development of a 75 tonf-class liquid rocket engine(LRE) is planned on the basis of the technologies mastered through the preceded research of a 30 tonf-class LRE. The thrust chamber of the LRE is required to have higher combustion stability, structural integrity and thermal durability. This paper deals with the design requirements of the 75-tonf thrust chamber and a variety of technical considerations which have been conducted analytically in the course of the design for the realization of the requirements.

  • In this study, combustion characteristics of solid propellants using sorbitol and potassium nitrate were found out. Burning rate was calculated with several combustion experiments, also specific impulse and characteristic exhaust velocity were compared with theoretical value. Thrust measured with thrust measurement system using plate spring. Mixture ratio of propellants was varied in experiments, also combustion characteristics of solid propellants which consulted experimental results was used micro solid rocket design having 1mm nozzle throat.

Domestic reliability requirement of rocket motor has been fulfilled by design capibility. But, reliability estimation process of our own shoud be estabilished by surveying the advanced nation's estimation technology.

  • In this study, flow visualization method to simulate internal flows of solid rocket motor in a water tunnel is introduced. The tunnel provides excellent visualization of vortex flows and has been used to propellant grain design of the solid rocket motor. A water tunnel is suggested for the research and the visualization test using dye, hydrogen bubble generator and PIV has been studied and discussed.
