In this study, the identification and distribution for rock types of the South Gate Wall of Myeoncheoneupseong Town Wall in Dangjin was investigated, and the homogeneity analysis of rock properties in the wall between the surrounding out crops estimated by examining the possible provenances. The Town Wall consists of variable rock types about 15 kinds. Granitic rocks (61.0%), quartzite (21.0%) and quartz feldspar porphyry (8.7%) accounted over 90% of total survey section. These rock properties are very similar to surrounding rocks of the Town Wall on the basis of occurrences, magnetic susceptibility, petrography, mineralogical and goechemical characteristics. Thus, it is probable that the rock properties of the Town Wall were supplied from the Town Wall around about 8km within at Seongsangri, Yangyuri, Seongbukri, Galsanri and Daedeokdong area. And supplied rock properties in the construction process, easy procurement rather than rock type was most likely seems to be considered.
Rock seems to be the ultimate excellent reaction for engineering loads, and often it Is. But the term rock includes a variety of types and conditions of material, some of which are surely not excellent and some that are potentially dangerous. Therefore, It is necessary to research absorption properties by rock strength. In this aspect the present paper deals essentially with the absorption exhibited by some Gneiss and Shale relation to its point load Index and specific gravity. In order to verify the rock strength, point load tester and two types rock specimen were used. Experimental results show that the absorption properties are highly dependent on rock strength. Complex rock masses include various joint planes, bedding planes and other weak structural planes. The existence of these structural planes affects the mechanical properties, deformation rules and failure modes of jointed rock masses. To study the influence of the parameters of a nonpersistent joint network on the mechanical properties and failure modes of jointed rock masses, synthetic rock mass (SRM) technology based on discrete elements is introduced. The results show that as the size of the joints in the rock mass increases, the compressive strength and the discreteness of the rock mass first increase and then decrease. Among them, the joints that are characterized by "small but many" joints and "large and clustered" joints have the most significant impact on the strength of the rock mass. With the increase in joint density in the rock mass, the compressive strength of rock mass decreases monotonically, but the rate of decrease gradually decreases. With the increase in the joint dip angle in rock mass, the strength of the rock mass first decreases and then increases, forming a U-shaped change rule. In the analysis of the failure mode and deformation of a jointed rock mass, the type of plastic zone formed after rock mass failure is closely related to the macroscopic displacement deformation of the rock mass and the parameters of the joints, which generally shows that the location and density of the joints greatly affect the failure mode and displacement degree of the jointed rock mass. The instability mechanism of jointed surrounding rock is revealed.

A series of sedimentary rocks which are formed in the Tertiary are distributed around Samcheok(Samcheok-Pukpyoung basin), Younghae(Younghae basin), Pohang(Pohang basin), Gyeongju(Yangnam basin), Ulsan(Ulsan basin), Jeju(Seogyuipo formation) in the southern region of the Korean Peninsula. This study concerned with geological, geophysical, geotechnical properties of the unconsolidated rocks in the Pohang area. A consolidated rocks are classified as hard rock - soft rock - weathered rock - residual soil follows in degree of weathering. But unconsolidated rocks has soil properties as well as rock's at the same time. The results of field excursion, boring, borehole-logging, rock testing, geophysical survey, laboratory test are soft rock range, but the durability of the rock until the residual soil from the weathered rock. We accomplished the rock mass classification of the unconsolidated rocks.
In order to study the mechanical properties of rock salt, triaxial compression tests under different temperatures and confining pressure are carried out on rock salt specimens, the influence of temperature and confining pressure on the mechanical properties of rock salt was studied. The results show that the temperature has a deteriorative effect on the mechanical properties of rock salt. With the increase of temperature, the peak stress of rock salt decreases visibly; the plastic deformation characteristics become much obvious; the internal friction angle increases; while the cohesion strength decreases. With the increase of confining pressure, the peak stress and peak strain of rock salt will increase under the same temperature. Based on the test data, the Duncan-Chang constitutive model was modified, and the modified Duncan-Chang rock salt constitutive model considering the effect of temperature and confining pressure was established. The stress-strain curve calculated by the modified model was compared with the stress-strain curve obtained from the test. The close match between the test results and the model prediction suggests that the modified Duncan-Chang constitutive model is accurate in describing the behavior of rock slat under different confining pressure and temperature conditions.
In this technical report we summarize the observational data on thermal and mechanical properties of rocks reported by over 70 best published papers. The experimental results reported individually are integrated and presented in tables and figures here, which will provide fundamental data to fairly determine and evaluate the rock properties at the initial design stage of underground structures exposed to high temperature environment.
Non-destructive methods are extensively utilized for assessing the integrity of rock bolts, with longitudinal wave speed being a crucial property for evaluating rock bolt quality. This research aims to propose a method for predicting reliable longitudinal wave velocities by leveraging various properties of the rock surrounding the rock bolt. The prediction algorithm employed is the Multilayer Neural Network (MNN), and the input properties includes elastic modulus, shear wave speed, compressive strength, compressional wave speed, mass density, porosity, and Poisson's ratio, totaling seven. The implementation of the MNN demonstrates high reliability, achieving a coefficient of determination of 0.996. To assess the impact of each input property on longitudinal wave speed, an importance score is derived using the random forest algorithm, with the elastic modulus identified as having the most significant influence. When the elastic modulus is the sole input parameter, the coefficient of determination for predicting the longitudinal wave speed is observed to be 0.967. The findings of this study underscore the reliability of selecting specific properties for predicting longitudinal wave speed and suggest that these insights can assist in identifying relevant input properties for rock bolt integrity assessments in future construction site experiments.

To understand the mechanical properties of fault rocks, data from 584 in situ and laboratory tests on fault rocks from 33 tunnels were analyzed. The unit weights of the fault rocks range from 17.3 to $28.2kN/m^3$ and the cohesion and friction angles vary from 5 to 260 kPa and $14.7^{\circ}$ to $44.0^{\circ}$, respectively. The modulus of deformation and elasticity were generally < 200 MPa. In most cases, the uniaxial compressive strength was < 0.5 MPa, and Poisson's ratios were mainly 0.20-0.35. The mechanical properties of individual rock types were analyzed using box plots, revealing that the cohesion values and friction angles of shale and phyllite have relatively wide inter-quartile ranges and that the modulus of deformation and elasticity of shale have the lowest values of all rock types. In the analysis of mechanical properties by components of fault rocks, the largest values were shown in damage zones of individual rock types.

The propagation mechanism of a detonation pressure with fully coupled charge is clarified and the blasting pressure propagated in rock mass is derived from the application of shock wave theory. Probabilistic distribution is obtained by using explosion tests on emulsion and rock property tests on granite in Seoul and then the probabilistic distribution of the blasting pressure is derived from their properties. The probabilistic distributions of explosive properties and rock properties show a normal distribution so that the blasting pressure propagated in rock can be also regarded as a normal distribution. Parametric analysis was performed to pinpoint the most influential parameter that affects the blasting pressure and it was found that the detonation velocity is the most sensitive parameter. Moreover, uncertainty analysis was performed to figure out the effect of each parameter uncertainty on the uncertainty of blasting pressure. Its result showed that uncertainty of natural rock properties constitutes the main portion of blasting pressure uncertainty rather than that of explosive properties.
This fundamental study analyzes the relationship between rock thermal properties and psychrometric properties in underground space and has a ultimate goal to develope technologies for predicting major environmental variables. The study is divided into 2 subjects (1) developement of a basic model for predicting temperature and humidity, (2) analysis of the validity of the model through application to a local underground storage space for military supplies. The basic model is built for the network of tunnel-shaped underground spaces. The model takes into account rock thermal properties and changes in moisture content in the air due to condensation/evaporation on the rock surface. Using lumped-parameter analytical method, heat flux from or to the surrounding rock is calculated and then the psychrometric properties(air quantity, pressure, temperature, humidity) are estimated through network simulation. The model can be utilized regardless of the tunnel type. The study site is a local storage space built in rock, mainly granite gneiss and quartz-porphyry. It is a U-shaped tunnel, 593.5m long and 6x6.5m wide. Relative humidity inside has to be strictly controlled under 55% to avoid erosion of a certain types of supplies stored in 6 chambers with the capacity of 300~1.000 ton. The thermal conductivity varies between 2.734 and 2.779W/m$^{\circ}C$ and the thermal diffusivity is in the range of 1.119 and $1.152{\times}10^{-6}\;m^2/s$ the specific heat between 910 and $920\;J/kg^{\circ}C$. Relative errors of the predicted values of dry/wet temperature and relative humidity are 0.8~3.0%, 0~7.5% and 0~7.0%, respectively. Apparent errors associated with the rock surface temperature seems to be partly due to the intrinsic limitations in the infrared thermometer used in this study.
