For the excavation of the rock, blast method is put into operation in most of the construction site in Korea. In comparison to other methods of excavation, blast method has many merits such as improvement in efficiency in operation, reducement of operation period, and etc. However, blast operation also creates much loss due to the blast vibration, noise, and fly rocks. Thus, in this study, we have examined main features, rock fragmentation effect and the application of plasma method the one of shallow vibration method. In this study, the attenuation exponent of blast method operated in the site was 1.39~1.40 and that of the plasma method was analysed to be 1.45~2.23. From the location where the distance between excavation location and observation location was over 15 m, most of excavation vibration were measured to be less than 0.2 kine(cm/sec), which is also the allowed standard value of sensitive buildings, such as cultural assets and computer facilities. According to the result of FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) analysis, the frequency measured through blast method in this site was 30~50 Hz and the frequency of plasma method ranges in between 30~130 Hz.
LCM test is one of the most powerful and reliable methods of experiment for the cutter head design and the performance prediction of TBM. In many cases, however, the predicted design model can be directly applied to the field design, because this test may have an uppermost limit in preparation and/or transportation of the large size rock samples and the test for the jointed rock mass is not easy. When the proper and reasonable numerical modeling is considered to overcome this limit, the most adequate cutter head design for TBM could be presented without any complicate preconsideration in the field. In this study, the crack propagation patterns dependent on the contact point of disc cutter and the angle of rock joint are analyzed for the rock specimen with a single joint using the UDEC. The authors could derive the appropriate contact points of disc cutters and their space with respect to the joint angle in rock mass thru the numerical analysis.
As the era of Industry 4.0 arrives, the researches using artificial intelligence in the field of rock engineering as well have increased. For a better understanding and availability of AI, this paper analyzed the types of algorithms and how to apply them to the research papers where AI is applied among domestic and international studies related to tunnels, blasting and mines that are major objects in which rock engineering techniques are applied. The analysis results show that the main specific fields in which AI is applied are rock mass classification and prediction of TBM advance rate as well as geological condition ahead of TBM in a tunnel field, prediction of fragmentation and flyrock in a blasting field, and the evaluation of subsidence risk in abandoned mines. Of various AI algorithms, an artificial neural network is overwhelmingly applied among investigated fields. To enhance the credibility and accuracy of a study result, an accurate and thorough understanding on AI algorithms that a researcher wants to use is essential, and it is expected that to solve various problems in the rock engineering fields which have difficulty in approaching or analyzing at present, research ideas using not only machine learning but also deep learning such as CNN or RNN will increase.
Ground vibration is one of the remarkable issues in tunnel blasting. In recent studies, to improve the fragmentation with reduction of ground vibration in tunnel blasting, a vibration-controlled blasting method with artificial cutting slot near the center-cut holes has been suggested. This study examines the effect of the different arrangement of artificial cut-slot on the vibration reduction and fragmentation by performing the full-scaled concrete block blast experiments and the numerical simulations with 3D-DFPA. The results show that the existence of artificial slot contributes to the improvement of vibration reduction, blast fragmentation and the efficiency of the cutting slot blast. It can be explained that the artificial slot play a free surface role and should decrease the burden between the cut holes. Crater volumes of the blasted concrete blocks were measured by 3-dimensional digital image analysis and compared with the ideal standard crater volume which can be calculated by theoretical standard blast design method. As a result, the ratio of burden and hole diameter which should achieve the standard crater in the cut-hole blasting were suggested.
Controlled tunnel blasting by deck charge was suggested and simulated by PFC and FEM analyses. Analyzed results showed that suggested method is efficient in fragmentation and able to decrease in vibration level because of decreased amount of charge per delay and dispersion of deck charge. This phenomena was explained by failure mechanism and proved that it can be successfully applied to tunnel blasting.
An overview of the plasma rock fragmentation system, the first commercial application of plasma blasting, is presented. Plasma blasting is based on the fast delivery of stored electrical energy to fracture the rock. The capacitor bank, switching device, cable and blasting electrode employed in the system are described. Utilization of the chemical energy delivered from the electrolyte and the development of a large charge transfer switch using pseudospark enabled the commerciailzaion. The vibration and noise level of the blasting is acceptable in the most ground breaking.
The brittleness of rocks plays an important role in determining the fragmentation and failure behavior of rock. However, there is still no standard method to evaluate the brittleness of rock, and previous studies have suggested the several definitions for estimation of brittleness of rock. Even in the process of mechanical rock excavation and drilling, the brittleness of rock is considered as an important property for evaluating the excavation efficiency of mechanical excavators or boreability of rock. The previous studies have been carried out to investigate the correlation between different brittleness of rock and cutting efficiency and boreability of rock. This study introduced a method for calculating the brittleness of rock from punch penetration test, and analyzed the correlation between the brittleness of rock calculated by the uniaxial compressive and Brazilian tensile strengths and that from punch penetration test. From the results of correlation analysis, the relationship between various brittleness was confirmed, and it was found that PSI and BI3 showed a good correlation with the strength-based brittleness index. In addition, the results indicated that B3 and B4 are suitable to represent the brittleness of rock in the field of mechanical rock excavation.

Safe and cheap emulsion explosives have recently replaced the existing CD explosives in order for people to reduce the prime cost and to prevent the safety accidents from happening in construction and civil engineering sites. However, the emulsion explosives have been in reality fared with difficulties in terms of the blasting force when using them in the tunnel constructed in the rock mass composed of hard rock. In this regards, this study is to verify their blasting efficiency and possibility of construction by applying MegaMEX, one of the high performance Emulsion explosives, to the rock mass of hard rock. In terms of their blasting efficiency such as advance ratio and fragmentation, it has turned out that they have overcome the limit of the existing Emulsion explosives and they have had the equivalent level of MegaMITE, one of the GD(Gelatin dynamite) types of explosives while they have been also advantageous to the environmental aspects.

Drilling operation for blasting is an important factor to determine blast effect. Drilling errors that arise from performing drilling for blasting purposes can reduce blasting effect causing residual holes, overbreak, and heterogeneous fragmentation, etc. Automatic drilling system was induced for precise drilling. As a result, drilling error caused by spaces between holes and burden was minor at 0~2.6% and accordingly, blasting effect was improved with over 90% drilling rate, the ratio of overbreak amount to total drilling amount at 4.3%, proportion of fragmentation rock under 50cm at 89~95% and so from this analyses, it was estimated to reduce the total cycle times related to blasting process.

It is necessary to increase the blasting efficiency in order to minimize the economic loss caused when the excavation cross section is reduced due to the stability problem of underground mining development, and for this, a new blasting design is proposed. In this study, the blasting efficiency of the general design in the field, the suggestion designI, which added two columns to production blasting, and the suggestion design II, which added one column to create asymmetry, is compared. Advance rate and fragmentation were selected as the evaluation index of the blasting efficiency. In the case of advance rate, compared to the normal, the suggestionI improved by 6.07% and the suggestionII improved by 4.65%. In the case of fragmentation, based on P80, compared to the normal, the suggestionI reduced about 58% and the suggestionII was about 47%. Accoording to the evaluation index, the suggestion designI shows better blasting efficiency than the suggestion designII. But considering the additional work time and cost required for the suggestion designI due to the insignificant difference in the evaluation index results, the asymmetry V-cut, the suggestion designII, is judged to be a more suitable blasting design for the site.
