This study attempts to characterize Taebaek mountainous region as a natural unit, relating to morphoclimatic milieu and landform development patterns of the mountains of each lithologic type. In the case of granitic mountains of Nothern parts of this region, the slopes presents more or less steep or irregular profile because of abundant microforms of exposed bedrocks and blocks. The development of such landscape is essentially due to differential weathering, associated with difference of joint density. In the case of gneissic mountains, the slopes are well regularized straight steep ones, due not only to generalized superficial weathering but also to massmovement of weathered materials. In the Middle parts of this region, especially in Taegwallyong area, with frequent alternations both of freezing-thawing and of snow accumulation-melting, the roles played by cryo-nival processes proved to be important in weathering of granite as well as in morpho-pedogenesis. In this area, weathered mantle, developed by cryogenic activity under humid condition of nival environment, covered almost all over the slopes. Although Southern parts of this region consist of limestone, on the mountainous volume, distribution of Karst forms are limited while predominate none karst forms such as cockpit type peaks, V-shaped type valleys dissecting steep slopes covered with thin deposits in thickness containing rock debris.
The host rock of the Usuki Stone Buddha Statues is dark gray welded tuff involved the Aso-4 pyroclastic flow sediments. This Buddha Statues are processing chlorosis from rainfall flowing above and underground water which were urgently needed for conservation measurement. White precipitates, the main source of salt weathering, on the surface of the Buddha Statues are mainly consisted of thenardite, gypsum and dolomite. Extraction experiment result shows that thenardite was dissolved at the beginning of stirring and then redissolved after 4 hours, and gypsum was detected until stirring for 2 hours, and then dissolved after stirring for 4 hours. As a result of monitoring the microclimate environment for 11 months to determine the recrystallization environment of white precipitates, the phase transition between thenadite and mirabilite appears widely in spring, and is maintained in an aqueous solution due to high temperatures in summer and fall. In winter, mirabilite is shown the widest by decreasing temperature. Therefore we requires details monitoring for blocking water transfer port and solved humidity environment in shelter.
The soils derived from granite gneiss occupy almost one third of the land area in Korea. The soils under forest vegetation, formed on granite gneiss, in Sun chon-shi, Chollanam-do in southern part of Korea, were studied to evaluate the weathering and the transformation of primary minerals into secondary minerals, clay minerals. The studied soils contained large amounts of ferromagnesian minerals, weathered biotites and were well weathered, strongly acid and low in organic matters and in ration exchange capacity. The clay contents in the Bt horizon were almost two times higher than those in the C horizon. The O horizon had a thin layer which consisted of a little decomposed plant components with a granic fabric and high porosity, and showed the micromorphological characteristics of moder humus. The related distribution pattern of the E horizon were enaulic and large amounts of silts and small amounts of sand grains were another characteristics of the E horizon. The most striking micromorphological features were multilaminated clay coating and infillings in the voids in the Bt and C horizons, and generally limpid ferriargillans ejected from the biotites and imparted red color to the soils in the Bt horizon. High clay contents in the Bt horizon was not only due to clay translocation, but also due to intensive in situ mineral weathering in this horizon. The most significant pedogenic process, revealed by the petrographic microscope and SEM, was the formation of iron oxides from biotites, the formation of tubular halloysites and the weathering models of biotites; wedge weathering and layer weathering. The thick coating on the weathering biotites showed the characteristics of the weathering process and the synthetic hematites were revealed in clays by TEM. Total chemical analysis of clays revealed extensive loss of Ca, and Na and the concentration of Fe and Al. Mineralogical studies of clays by XRD showed that micas were almost completely weathered to kaolinite, vermiculite-kaolinite intergrade, hematite, gibbsite, while halloysites from other primary minerals. Some dioctahedral mica appeared to be resistant in the soils. Parent rock of the soils contained a considerable amounts of biotites and this forest soils showed especially a dominant characteristics of biotite weathering.

The stone Buddhas and Shrine of Unjusa temple (Korea Treasure No. 797) in Hwasun formed in Koryo Dynasty are unique style which the Buddha faces each other the back parts of south and north within the stone Shrine. The stone Buddhas and Shrine are highly evaluated in historical, artistic and academic respects. But, the stone properties have been exposed in the open system various aspects of degradations weathered for a long time without specific protective facilities. The rock materials of the stone Buddhas and Shrine are about 47 blocks, and total press load is about 56.6 metric ton. The host rocks composed mainly of white grey hyaline lithic tuff and rhyolitic tuff breccia. In addition, biotite granite used as part during the restoration works. The chemical index of alteration for host tuffaceous rocks and the replacement granites range from 52.1 to 59.4 and 50.0 to 51.0, respectively. Weathering types for the stone Buddhas and Shrine were largely divided with physical, chemical and biological weathering to make a synthetic deterioration map according to aspects of damage, and estimate share as compared with surface area. Whole deterioration degrees are represented that physical weathering appeared exfoliation. Chemical weathering is black coloration and biological weathering of grey lichen, which show each lighly deterioration degrees. According to deterioration degree by direction of stone Buddhas and Shrine, physical weathering mostly appeared by 39.1% on the sorthern part, and chemical weathering is 61.2% high share on the western part. Biological weathering showed 38.3% the largest distribution on the southern part. Therefore, it is necessary to try hardening for the parts with serious cracks or exfoliations, remove secondary contaminants and organisms through regular cleaning. Also necessary to make a plan to remove moisture of the ground which causes weathering, and estimate that need established and scientific processing through clinical demonstration of conservation plan that chooses suitable treatment.
The mechanism of stone exfoliation and its cause in relation to chemical weathering by soluble salt were studied. Chemical, mineralogical and physical analysis was performed in exfoliation samples from stone monuments. The representative salt is gypsum in the exfoliation samples. In order to understand the salt reaction, stone samples(tuff and granite) were treated with two type of the salt, gypsum and sodium sulfate, which have different solubility. The capillary water uptakes are slight increased in impregnated with Na2SO4 and weathering simulation of two rock types. It means that the rock is deteriorated in the near of the surface by $Na_2SO_4$. $CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$ bring out the thicker exfoliation than $Na_2SO_4$ because it is penetrated into the deeper zone and amount of accumulated salt is more abundant in the inner part than in the near of the surface. The exfoliation was formed in the tuff by salt treatment and 30cycle of weathering simulation, but there are not significant symptoms of exfoliation in the granite by same condition. This result was caused by the different capillary water uptakes and porosity of the rocks. In the tuff, salt solutions are penetrated into the inner part due to its high capillary water uptakes and porosity but the granite, which has low value relatively, can be formed thinner exfoliation.
Properties of sliding materials are dependent on the lithology because debris is the product of rock weathering processes. In order to characterize transportation behavior of debris dependent of debris types, this study selected 26 debris flows over three areas composed with different rock weathering types and topographic conditions. Analyses of lithology, weathering, and topographic characteristics were performed by detailed field survey. Based on the field survey data, transportation behavior of debris was studied at the aspect of the relationship of grain size and volume of debris as well as topographic conditions. According to the study results, change of slope angle is very influential factor on runout distance of debris among the topographic factors. Because the sliding velocity and the energy of debris are frequently changed and more irregular on an undulating slope, the unout distance of debris is larger than that of an uniformly dipping slope. Runout distance of debris is also influenced by volume and grain size of debris. Volume of debris in the gabbro is four or five times larger than that of the granite area because it is controlled by the lithology. Considered with grain size distribution, runout distance of debris is longer in the gabbro area which is composed with irregular grain size bearing large corestones than that in the medium grained granite area.

Sedimentary rocks from construction waste are discarded through open storage and landfilling, which causes an increase in construction cost and inefficient of execution of works. Some sandstone are selected and utilized as aggregates, but shale is buried as industrial waste. Therefore, in this research, we evaluated weathering properties of shale aggregate that is widely distributed throughout Daegu-Kyeongbuk region and freeze-thaw characteristics of concrete according to the replacement ratio of shale aggregate, in an effort to stabilize aggregate supply-demand in Daegu-Kyeongbuk region and develop alternative aggregates. We used red shale and black shale in the experiment, which were exported from a construction site in Deagu. We verified the usage of shale as a concrete aggregate by comparing andesite, which is broadly used as a thick aggregate for concrete, to hornfels, which is a metamorphic sedimentary rock. As a result of the experiment, we observed no degradation phenomenon for andesite and hornfels. However, a part of country rock containing black shale was found to be exfoliated. Red shale started having cracks in the direction of stratification after 1.5 months of direct exposure, and it broke into smaller pieces after approximately 4 months. After 300 cycles of freeze-thaw process on the concrete manufactured according to the replacement ratio of shale aggregate, the modulus of elasticity was 97% for plain and 95% for hornfels. In the case of RS_100, it was 57% after 210 cycles, and for BS_100, it was 54% after 240 cycles. Therefore, we established that, as the number of repetition increases, the freeze-thaw resistance decreases dramatically.
This study was to characterize the minerals in fractured and bedrock zone, and determine quantitatively sorption for radioactive cesium ($^{137}Cs$) at the Korean nuclear facility site. The rock samples were granite group that mainly consists of quartz and feldspar with 10~20% mica minerals. Chlorite was observed as secondary mineral for the rock samples collected from fractured zone, but not for bedrock samples. The $^{137}Cs$ sorption distribution coefficients increased to $K_d$ = 880~960 mL/g in the fractured zone because of the presence of secondary minerals formed by weathering processes, compared to the bedrock zone ($K_d$ = 820~840 mL/g). These results suggest that the released $^{137}Cs$ to groundwater environment could be significantly retarded in the fractured zone in the case of severe nuclear accident at the study site.
Host rock of Cheonjeon-ri petroglyph is shale belonging to the Daegu Formation of Cretaceous Gyeongsang Supergroup. The rocks were hornfelsified by thermal alteration, and shows high density and hardness. The petroglyph forms weathered zone with certain depth, and has difference in mineral and chemical composition from the unweathered zone. As the physical deterioration evaluations, most of cracks on the surface appear parallel to the bedding, and are concentrated in the upper part with relatively low density. Breakout parts are occurred in the upper and lower parts of the petroglyph, accounting for 6.0% of the total area and occurs to have been created by the wedging action of cracks crossing. The first exfoliation parts occupying the surface were 23.8% of the total area, the second exfoliations covered with 9.3%, and the exfoliation parts with three or more times were calculated as 3.4%. It is interpreted that this is not due to natural weathering, and the thermal shock caused by the cremation custom here in the past. As the ultrasonic properties, the petroglyph indicates highly strength in the horizontal direction parallel to bedding, and the area with little physical damage recorded mean of 4,684 m/s, but the area with severe cracks and exfoliations showed difference from 2,597 to 3,382 m/s on average. Physical deterioration to the Cheonjeon-ri petroglyph occurred to influence by repeated weathering, which caused the rock surface to become more severe than the inside and the binding force of minerals to weaken. Therefore, it can be understood that when greater stress occurs in the weathered zone than in the unweathered zone, the relatively weathered surface loses its support and exfoliation occurs.
The Buddha triad and 16 Arhat statues carved on the rock surface at Seongbulsa temple is the only domestic remaining example of all 16 Arhats, so its academic value is very high. However, it is severely damaged and so required a stability evaluation through study of digital documentation and precise diagnosis for the purpose of comprehensive conservation. This process established that the Buddha statues were of similar scale, while the Arhats showed a wide variety of sizes, and the two kith and kin in the volume were larger than the Arhats. It was estimated that the statues of food for Buddha are similar to the Arhat statues, and most of the statues are well-formed. The rock used to carve the Buddha statues is banded gneiss with distinct foliation, alternating between white bands of quartz and feldspar and black bands composed of biotite. The Buddha statues have been damaged by physical weathering, discoloration, and biological contamination. In damage evaluations, joint (3.6 crack index), peeling (5.2%), exfoliation (1.7%), and falling off (0.1%) were observed on the rock surface of the Buddha statues. In particular, due to severe biological weathering, stage 9 and 10 biological coverage of the rock surface accounted for 57.5% of the total area, and stages 5 to 8 also accounted for a high share at 22.3%. The discoloration factors were shown to be dark brown and white with Fe, Ca, and S, and a large amount of C detected in the blackened contaminants, and the damage weight high in all areas. Discontinuities in different directions were identified in the rock surface. Analysis of potential rock failure types indicated that there is a possibility of plane and toppling failure, but wedge failure is unlikely to occur. The mean ultrasonic velocity of the main rock surface was 2,463m/sec, the lower part of the left side with a large number of joints was relatively low, and the highly weathered (HW) type to the completely weathered (CW) type concentrated distribution, showing weak properties. For the Buddha statues, conservation treatment is required for about 14.9% of micro cracks and 58.9% of exfoliation cracks. In addition, in order to improve the conservation environment of the Buddha statues, maintenance of drainage and ground preparations for the rock surface gradient and plants are necessary, and protection facilities should be reviewed for long-term conservation and management purposes.
