  • A robust control design procedure for a nuclear reactor has been developed and experimentally validated on the Penn State TRIGA research reactor. The utilization of the robust controller as a component of an autonomous control system is also demonstrated. Two methods of specifying a low order (fourth-order) nominal-plant model for a robust control design were evaluated: 1) by approximation based on the 'physics' of the process and 2) by an optimal Hankel approximation of a higher order plant model. The uncertainty between the nominal plant models and the higher order plant model is supplied as a specification to the ,u-synthesis robust control design procedure. Two methods of quantifying uncertainty were evaluated: 1) a combination of additive and multiplicative uncertainty and 2) multiplicative uncertainty alone. The conclusions are that the optimal Hankel approximation and a combination of additive and multiplicative uncertainty are the best approach to design robust control for this application. The results from nonlinear simulation testing and the physical experiments are consistent and thus help to confirm the correctness of the robust control design procedures and conclusions.

  • The wing rock phenomenon is a high angle of attack aerodynamic motion manifested by limit cycle roll oscillations. Experimental studies reveal that direct control and manipulation of leading edge vortices, through the use of 'blowing' techniques is effective in the suppression of wing rock. This paper presents the design of a robust controller for the experimental implementation of one such 'blowing' technique - recessed angle spanwise blowing (RASB), to achieve wing rock suppression over a range of operating conditions. The robust controller employs Takagi - Sugeno fuzzy system, which is fine-tuned by experimental simulations. Performance of the controller is assessed by real-time wind tunnel experiments with an 80 degree swept back delta wing. Robustness is demonstrated by the suppression of wing rock at a range of angles of attack and free stream velocities. Numerical simulation results are used to further substantiate the experimental findings.

  • Fractures and wrinkles are two major defects frequently found in the sheet metal forming process. The process has several noise factors that cannot be ignored when determining the optimal process conditions. Therefore, without any countermeasures against noise, attempts to reduce defects through optimal design methods have often led to failure. In this study, a new and robust design methodology that can reduce the possibility of formation of fractures and wrinkles is presented using decision-making theory. A two-attribute value function is presented to form the design metric for the sheet metal forming process. A modified complex method is adopted to isolate the optimal robust design variables. One of the major limitations of the traditional robust design methodology, which is based on an orthogonal array experiment, is that the values of the optimal design variables have to coincide with one of the experimental levels. As this restriction is eliminated in the complex method, a better solution can be expected. The procedure of the proposed method is illustrated through a robust design of the sheet metal forming process of a side member of an automobile body.

  • In this study a method for a robust design of mechanisms is proposed. The method used in the experimental analysis and quality engineering is applied for mechanisms design. A mathematical model for a mechanism is estimated by the response surface analysis and the estimated model is used in minimization of the variance. Using this result, robust design can be carried out. The method can be applied for general mechansims. Furthermore because the method can be used in the design stage using the computer model, improved quality and lower cost of the product is achieved even in the design stage.

  • In this paper, we apply the robust disturbance observer (DOB) to a SPM-based data storage (SDS) system. In the SDS system, coupling dynamics and parameter uncertainties are obstacles to the precision tracking control. Although the DOB is known to be an effective method to reject disturbances, there has been no systematic design approach to how to design DOB parameters. In this paper, the robust DOB is formulated based on the robust stabilization of normalized coprime factor plant description and the $H{\infty}$ loop shaping method. From the simulation and experimental results. the improved robustness and performance are obtained by the proposed robust DOB.

  • This paper present a robust controller design method based on the estimation of velocity disturbance to construct a robust fine seek control system. A loop gain adjustment algorithm is introduced to accurately estimate the velocity disturbance in spite of the uncertainties of fine actuator. A weighting function is optimally selected from a minimum fine seek open-loop gain, calculated by estimating the velocity disturbance. A robust fine seek controller is designed by considering a robust $H_{\infty}$ control problem using the weighting function. The proposed controller design method is applied to the fine seek control system of a DVD rewritable drive and is evaluated through the experimental results.

  • This paper discusses Robust $H{\infty}$ control problems for networked control systems (NCSs) with time delays and subject to norm-bounded parameter uncertainties. Based on a new discrete-time model, two approaches of robust controller design are proposed. A numerical example and experimental verification with an NCS test bed are given to illustrate the feasibility and effectiveness of proposed design methodologies.

  • This paper presents a robust tracking controller design method for the track-following system of an optical recording device. A tracking loop gain adjustment algorithm is introduced to accurately estimate the tracking vibration quantity in spite of the uncertainties of the tracking actuator. A minimum tracking open-loop gain is calculated by the estimated tracking vibration quantity and a tolerable limit of tracking error. A robust tracking controller is designed by considering a robust $H_\infty$ control problem with the weighting function of a slightly larger gain than the minimum tracking open-loop gain. The proposed controller design method is applied to the track-following system of an optical recording device and is evaluated through the experimental result.

  • In this paper, a controller design method is proposed for haptic interface considering transparency and robust stability. For this, a performance index for the transparency as performance measure is defined in the points of impedance matching and the optimal solution which is minimizing the performance index is obtained by solving H2 optimal problem. In haptic interface, the modeling uncertainties can be restricted to that of haptic device. To implement the robust stabilizing haptic controller to the uncertainties of haptic device, a robust stable condition using H$\infty$ norm from small gain theorem is proposed. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed haptic controller design scheme, numerical examples and experimental results are illustrated for virtual wall consisting of stiffness and damping factor.

  • In case the uncertainty existing in a system is assumed to satisfy the matching condition and to be come-bounded. Y. H. Chen proposed an adaptive robust control algorithm which introduced adaptive sheme for a design parameter into robust deterministic controls. In this paper, the adaptive robust control algorithm is applied to the position tracking control of direct drive robots, and simulation and experimental studies are conducted to evaluate control performance.
