  • In order to enhance dexterity in execution of robot tasks, a redundant number of degrees-of-freedom (DOF) is adopted for design of robotic mechanisms like robot arms and multi-fingered robot hands. Associated with such redundancy in the number of DOFs relative to the number of physical variables necessary and sufficient for description of a given task, an extra performance index is introduced for controlling such a redundant robot in order to avoid arising of an ill-posed problem of inverse kinematics from the task space to the joint space. This paper shows that such an ill-posedness of DOF redundancy can be resolved in a natural way by using a novel concept named “stability on a manifold”. To show this, two illustrative robot tasks 1) robotic handwriting and 2) control of an object posture via rolling contact by a multi-DOF finger are analyzed in details.

  • This paper presents the robust velocity estimation of an omnidirectional mobile robot using a polygonal array of optical mice that are installed at the bottom of the mobile robot. First, the velocity kinematics from a mobile robot to an array of optical mice is derived as an overdetermined linear system. The least squares velocity estimate of a mobile robot is then obtained, which becomes the same as the simple average for a regular polygonal arrangement of optical mice. Next, several practical issues that need be addressed for the use of the least squares mobile robot velocity estimation using optical mice are investigated, which include measurement noises, partial malfunctions, and imperfect installation. Finally, experimental results with different number of optical mice and under different floor surface conditions are given to demonstrate the validity and performance of the proposed least squares mobile robot velocity estimation method.

  • In this paper, a novel 3-DOF hybrid robot with enlarged workspace is presented for high speed applications. The 3-DOF hybrid robot is made up of one linear actuator and 2-DOF planar parallel robot in series. The actuation consists of one ball-screw to make one linear motion and two rotary ball-screws to transmit rotational motion to 2-DOF parallel robot. The workspace can be enlarged according to ball-screw stroke and the moving inertia can be reduced due to locating all the heavy actuators at the fixed base. The inverse kinematics and workspace analyses are presented. The robot prototype and PC-based control system are developed.

  • In this paper, development of an omni-directional mobile robot with rocker-bogie link structure is addressed. The overall mobile robot system consists of the robot mechanism with embedded control architecture, wireless communication with host graphic monitoring system, and the joy stick tole-controller. In the cluttered environment with various sizes of obstacles, the omni-directionality and the traversality are required for a mobile robot, so that the robot call go around or climb over the obstacles according to the size. The mobile robot mechanism developed in this paper has both of the omni-directionality and the traversality by 4 steerable driving wheels and the 2 additional passive omni-directional wheels linked with the rocker-bogie structure. The kinematic modeling for the mobile robot is described based on the well-known Sheth-Uicker convention and the instantaneous coordinate system.

  • We developed the module of the software that robot designers can perform their work faster and more easily. The parametric modeler is founded on the virtual robot design program. The virtual robot design program is the powerful software which may be used to solve various problems of robot kinematics and dynamics. The parametric modeler in the software we developed is that all the positions of joints and links are changed automatically when the designer changes one joint or one link in the robot system. Without parametric method, robot-designers must change all the positions of connected joints and links. It might become time-consuming. However, it is very efficient for designers to use the method of batch-processing in performing design-changes of robot-links using the parametric modeler.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop a method of Collision-Free Path Planning (CFPP) for an articulated robot. First, the configuration of the robot is built by a set of robot joint angles derived from robot inverse kinematics. The joint space, that is made of the joint angle set, forms a Configuration space (Cspcce). Obstacles in the robot workcell are also transformed into the Cobstacles using slice projection method. Actually the Cobstacles means the configurations of the robot causing collision with obstacles. Secondly, a connected graph, a kind of roadmap, is constructed by the free configurations in the Cspace, where the free configurations are randomly sampled from a free Cspace immune from the collision. Thirdly, robot paths are optimally determinant in the connected graph. A path searching algorithm based on $A^*$ is employed in determining the paths. Finally, the whole procedures for the CFPP method are shown for a proper articulated robot as an illustrative example.

  • Conventional robot manipulators actuated by motors with the speed reducer such as the harmonic drive have weakness in the load capacity, since the speed reducer does not have enough strength. To overcome this, a new type of the robot actuator based on the four-bar-link mechanism driven by the ball screw was proposed and constructed. Also, a new type of a revolute-jointed robot manipulator composed of the developed actuators was developed. The base axis is actuated by the motor with the conventional speed reducer, but the other axes are actuated by the proposed actuators. The kinematics and dynamics of the robot were analyzed, and the performance test of the robot was made. Through the test results, the performance of superior load capacity versus the robot weight is shown.

  • In this paper, a new mobile robot, so called a rollerbot, is presented, which has single body and rugby-ball shaped roller wheel. A rollerbot has single point contact on ground and low energy consumption in motion because of the reduced friction. By changing center of mass using a balancing weight, a rollerbot is able to get steering force. The vertical position of mass center of the rollerbot in this paper is designed to lie inside radius of the roller wheel, so that to have stable equilibrium position. Thus, the posture and the steering control of the rollerbot can be easily done by changing the center of mass. Kinematics of the rollerbot is derived by transformation of differential motion in this paper.

  • Human like robot arm posture for grasping by considering the shape of the target object is quite a challenge in the field of robotics. In this paper, an optimized grasp posture with respect to the shape of the object considering the wrist joint angle and elbow elevation angle, in order to verify that the grasp posture is human like has been proposed. Given a target object, the candidates for grasp are computed by the method described in this paper. For each candidate, the closed loop inverse kinematics has been solved for the corresponding hand position and orientation. From the obtained joint angles through inverse kinematics, the elbow elevation angle has been computed and compared with the elbow elevation angle obtained through human movement data by the characteristic equation. After considering all the candidates, the hand position and orientation with minimum wrist joint and difference in elbow elevation angles has been utilized as the optimized grasp posture. Simulation results are presented.

  • This paper proposes a simple and high performance hybrid position/force control of robots based on disturbance compensation by using the disturbance observer in task coordinate space. The disturbance observer linealizes system of robot manipulators in task coordinate space and realizes acceleration control. To realize the strict acceleration control, the disturbance observer whose input is a position signal by simple computation, works as if it were a disturbance detector. The inverse kinematics can be simplified, because the disturbance observer in task coordinate space compensates not only the disturbance but also the error due to the simplification of the inverse kinematics. The new strategy is applied to a three-degrees-of freedom direct drive robot. The robust and simple hybrid position/force control is realized experimentally.
