  • Ultrasonic motors are newly developed motors which are expected to be useful as actuators in many practical systems such as robot arms or manipulators because of several advantages against the electromagnetic motors. However, the precise control of the ultrasonic motor is generally difficult due to the absence of appropriate and rigorous mathematical model. Furthermore, owing to heavy nonlinearity, the position control of a pendulum system driven by the ultrasonic motor has a problem that control method using multiple neural network controllers based on a fuzzy inference system that can determine the initial position of the pendulum in the beginning of control operation. In addition, and appropriate neural network controller that has been learned to operate well at the corresponding initial position is adopted by switching schemes. The effectiveness of the proposed method was verified and evaluated from real experiments.

  • In this research we discuss an integrated actuator-control system for advanced control of a smart Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuator. Toward this goal, we designed and fabricated an actuator-control module combining two SMA actuating units with a single-chip microprocessor, two different sensing elements, and an actuator driver. In our proposed system, sensing elements include a 6-axis single-chip motion sensor for orientation measurement and a circuit for resistance measurement of SMA wires. We experimentally verified our proposed actuator-control system using actuator driving, sensor data readings, and communication tests.

  • In this paper, a cable-driven endoscopic manipulator (CEM) is designed for the Chinese latest compact fusion reactor. The whole CEM arm is more than 3000 mm long and includes end vision tools, an endoscopic manipulator/control system, a feeding system, a drag chain system, support systems, a neutron shield door, etc. It can cover a range of ±45° of the vacuum chamber by working in a wrap-around mode, etc., to meet the need for observation at any position and angle. By placing all drive motors in the end drive box via a cable drive, cooling, and radiation protection of the entire robot can be facilitated. To address the CEM motion control problem, a discrete trajectory tracking method is proposed. By restricting each joint of the CEM to the target curve through segmental fitting, the trajectory tracking control is completed. To avoid the joint rotation angle overrun, a joint limit rotation angle optimization method is proposed based on the equivalent rod length principle. Finally, the CEM simulation system is established. The rationality of the structure design and the effectiveness of the motion control algorithm are verified by the simulation.

  • This paper describes the configuration of a multi-agent system that can recognize human intentions. This system constructs ontologies of human intentions and enables knowledge acquisition and sharing between intelligent agents operating in different environments. This is achieved by using a bi-directional associative memory network. The process of intention recognition is based on fuzzy association inferences. This paper shows the process of information sharing by using ontologies. The purpose of this research is to create human-centered systems that can provide a natural interface in their interaction with people.

  • The FIC(Flat Integrated Circuits)is widely used for good productivity but very difficult for visual identification. The required position tolerance is 0.05mm and orientation tolerance is 0.25 degree for assembly. The research was performed to detect FIC defects and to estimate the placement of FIC within the tolerances. In this study an automatic visual system is developed, which can successfully perform a fine assembly operation using the cartesian robot.

  • This paper describes the development of a 'General-purpose ETRI MAP interface module' (GEM) for a Mini-MAP network. GEM operates as a Mini-MAP node in our FA system. To communicate between GEM and programmable devices such as PLC, CNC, and robot, RS232C is used, which is a traditional method. A Mini-MAP host system controls and monitors programmable devices via GEM. The Mini-MAP function of GEM is implemented and tested on the basis of the MAP V3.0.

  • Ultrasonic sensors are widely used in mobile robot applications to recognize external environments, because they are cheap, easy to use, and robust under varying lighting conditions. In most cases, a single ultrasonic sensor is used to measure the distance to an object based on time-of-flight (TOF) information, whereas multiple sensors are used to recognize the shape of an object, such as a corner, plane, or edge. However, the conventional sequential driving technique involves a long measurement time. This problem can be resolved by pulse coding ultrasonic signals, which allows multi-sensors to be fired simultaneously and adjacent objects to be distinguished. Accordingly, the current presents a new simultaneous coded driving system for an ultrasonic sensor array for object recognition in autonomous mobile robots. The proposed system is designed and implemented using a DSP and FPGA. A micro-controller board is made using a DSP, Polaroid 6500 ranging modules are modified for firing the coded signals, and a 5-channel coded signal generating board is made using a FPGA. To verify the proposed method, experiments were conducted in an environment with overlapping signals, and the flight distances for each sensor were obtained from the received overlapping signals using correlations and conversion to a bipolar PCM-NRZ signal.

  • This work proposes the wearable and intelligent system to control mobile vehicle instead of user. The system having the ability of assistance as well as portable can be applied to various controller. It is possible to observe the state of mobile vehicle and have a good command of robot instead of human. In this paper, the wearable system operating the mobile vehicle by deciding the velocity and rotation angle that are demanded for collision avoidance with the obtained driving information from mobile vehicle is implemented. To make the proposed wearable system have an intelligence, the hierarchical fuzzy logic and neural network are used.

  • Tracking control of an automatic pipe cutting robot (APCROMB) is studied. Using magnetic force APCROMB, which is designed and developed in Kyung Hee University, binds itself to the pipe and executes unmanned cutting process. The gravity effect on the movement of APCROMB varies as it rotates around the cylindrical pipe laid in the gravitational field. To maintain a constant velocity and consistent cutting performance against the varying gravitational effect, the authors adopt a multi-rate repetitive learning controller (MRLC), which learns the required effort to cancel the repetitive tracking errors caused by nonlinear effect. In addition to the varying gravity effect other types of nonlinear disturbances including backlash in the driving system and the slip between the wheels of APCROMB and the pipe also cause degradation in the cutting process. In order to identify those nonlinear disturbances the position estimation based on the encoder attached at the motor is not good enough. To identify the absolute angular position of APCROMB the authors propose the angular position estimation based on the signals from a MEMS-type two-axis accelerometer mounted on APCROMB. The tracking performances of APCROMB with a MRLC using the encoder-based position estimation is experimentally measured and results are shown. Also the difference between the encoder-based angular displacement measurement and the accelerometerbased angular displacement measurement is included.

  • This study is implementation of attitude control system(ACS - Attitude Control System). for a multi legs robot. This study designs H/W of Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and attitude control algorithm S/W. Compare performance with Mtx and MTx in order to verify action performance of this system after implementation, and will verify a system integrated IMU of a multi-legs robot. ACS uses Gyro and an accelerometer and an earth magnetism sensor, and it is a system controlling a roll, pitch angle attitude of an object. Generally, low price MEMS is difficult to calculate a correct situation of an object as an error occurs severely the Inertial sensor. This study implements IMU in order to develop ACS as use MEMS, accelerometer, Gyro sensor and earth magnetism sensor. Design algorithm each a roll, pitch, yaw attitude guaranteeing regular performance, and do poling in a system as include an attitude calculation program in an IMU system implemented. Mixed output of Gyro and an accelerometer, and recompensed a roll, pitch angle, and loaded in this study on a target platform in order to implement the ACS which guaranteed performance more than a continuously regular level, and operated by real time, and did porting, and verified.
