  • This study was carried out to investigate the concentrations of Ni, Cr and Cu, to analyze the correlations among those, and between concentrations and traffic volumes by type of car in roadside ambient air at Chongro-, Chungkechon- and Kangnam terminal- area in Seoul from October 1st to October 31st in 1997. The results were as follows ; 1. The means of concentrations of Ni in roadside ambient air were 34.1, 25.1 and 23.6 ng/m$^3$ at Chungkechon, Kangnam terminal and Chongro area, respectively. The highest concentrations of Ni by time were 26.8 in the evening, 45.5 in the evening and 49.4 ng/m$^3$ in the forenoon at Chongro, Chungkechon and Kangnam terminal area, respectively. 2. The means of concentrations of Cr in road side ambient air were 97.7, 80.1 and 70.9 ng/m$^3$ at Chong, Chungkechon and Kangnam terminal area, respectively. The highest concentrations of Cu by time were 205.3 in the evening, 114.4 in the evening and 92.3 ng/m$^3$ in the forenoon at Chongro, Chungkechon and Kangnam terminal area, respectively. 4. The tendencies of concentrations of Ni and Cr by time were similar to each other. Especially, at Kangnam terminal area, correlation coefficients between concentrations of Ni and Cr and the traffic volume of bus were high(r=0.997,0.975). 5. The tendency of concentration of Cu and the traffic volume of passenger car at each area were high(r=0.832, 0.968) 6. Correlation coefficients between Cu and Zn, and between Ni and Cr were 0.762 and 0.842, respectively. This means that the possibility of co-existence of Cu-Zn or Ni-Cr is very high.

  • Contamination of soil by deicing salt is among the important environment problems due to their toxicity and negative impact to human health and the environment. One of the effective methods for cleaning the soil from deicing salts is desalination using soil amendment-phytoremediation continuum treatment. The purpose of this study was to determine how much of the pH, EC control and Ca2+, Na+, Mg2+, and K+ taken up soil amendments and Miscanthus sinensis, and to evaluate the effect of salt reduction and growth improvement as affected by soil amendment in high concentration of calcium chloride (CaCl2) deicing salts. Results indicated that the addition of soil amendments was decrease the EC and pH, also significantly reduce the leaching of Ca2+, Na+, Mg2+, K+, a chloride ions related deicing salts, compared to the control for CaCl2 10 g/L treatment. It also resulted in an enhanced plant growth and higher plant height, leaf length, leaf width, number of leaves, fresh weight and dry weight in Hydroball treatment + Miscanthus sinensis planting continuum treatment compared to the treatment that planted Miscanthus sinensis only. Therefore, we concluded that soil amendments might be attributed to an accumulation of deicing slats in the roadside soil, resulting in the improvement of Miscanthus sinensis growth.

  • To investigate the causes of distribution of Kummerowia striata (Thunb.) Schindl. mostly restricted on the roadside and reclaimed land, plant growth was analyzed under different of tread-pressures: $P_1$(10 times/day, $16.34Kg/cm^2$), $P_2$(20 times/day, $31.52 Kg/cm^2$), $P_3$(30 times/day, $40.79 kg/cm^2$) and the control $P_c$(0 times/day, $3.73 Kg/cm^2$). The matter production in the $P_1$decreased compared with that in the $P_c$, and those in the $P_2$and $P_3$ continuously decreased so that its length growth gradually decreased and, in particular, the growth of leaves and nodule was suppressed. The number of leaves and roots tended to increase in the $P_2$and $P_3$. The water contents of roots following the increase of tread-pressure increased continuously. Following the increase of tread-pressure, T/R ratio and C/F ratio tended to increase. Kummerowia striata showed the highest growth in the $P_c$ and showed 26% relative growth in the $P_1$compared with that in the $P_c$. This plant showed 8% relative growth in the $P_3$, which is excess to the tread-pressure $21Kg/cm^2$, the limit of growth in the plant. Because this plant grew continuously in the P$_3$, the tread-pressure is regarded as an important factor affecting the roadside distribution of this plant.

  • Road traffic noise causes considerable disturbance and annoyance in exposed inhabitants. Particularly, arterial road noise is a significant environmental problem in many urban areas in which higher traffic volume and higher car speed occur. Arterial road noise became the target of this investigation in Seoul, South Korea. Noise levels were measured at four points that were based on distance from roadside at the same measurement site and under the conditions as reported by the National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) in 1999. The average noise levels ($L_{eq,1h}$) of the arterial road was 80.3 dBA at 5 m, 77.4 dBA at 10 m, 73.7 dBA at 20 m, 70.9 dBA at 30 m. A comparison between 1999 and 2008's measurement values has shown that in 2008 noise level is up by about 1.5 dBA, traffic volume has increased by about 15.7%, while car speed has decrease by about 8%. The relationship between 2008' measured values and predicted values using the NIER Equation is low under 10 m from the roadside. The influence range of arterial noise is calculated at 26 m for road noise limits in daytime. In relation to the comparison between traffic volume and noise level, the equivalence in traffic volume (Light car+10xHeavy car) is higher than other variables.
