  • One of the basic requirements for the most advanced countries would be the well-planned traffic infrastructures. For such traffic safety systems, foreign countries follow the current tendency to which they manage the traffic facilities and equipments based on the objective assessment for the state of every traffic safety facility in terms of Asset Management(AM). As the road safety facilities related among them are very diverse, and their functions are very important as well, the regulations and directions for installing them are enacted. However, despite the standards and directions for the installations, sometimes, the facilities are not installed in accordance with the standards, not only causing inconvenience to the users but also negatively affecting the safety for them. In the study, for the facilities in which the installation interval and height are standardized according to the designed speed and geometrical structure of the road among the various road safety facilities, the image analysis model capable of measuring them with a line scanning camera was developed. In addition, the program systematically analyzing this was also developed and applied to the field and, as the result of that, the size and installation interval of the facilities could be measured fast and accurately.

  • It has been applied several ways in order to prevent traffic accidents and speed management on the road which is one of very important factors to prevent accidents. In this study, it is analyzed whether the facility such as the flashing and crosswalk, speed cameras and intermittent warning signs affect on a driving deceleration or not. It has been shown that the flashing and crosswalk and speed cameras except intermittent warning signs play a role of reducing the driving speed. The result showed that these traffic safety facilities help to improve the average speed as well as velocity distribution which was derived by the speed deviation even if there were the difference between facilities. Speed limit display does not affect the deceleration of the driver. Therefore, it was founded in this research that there were the driving speed reduction effect due to the facilities on the road. In order to control the driving speed on the road, it is necessary to install facilities with appropriate location and spacing on the road. In addition, place that turns out suppressed speeding through speed management also are required adequate facilities such as speed cameras.

  • Accident Black Spot Improvement Project is the representative road safety intervention to eliminate environmental risk factors on the roadway by installing road safety facilities. Although it is one of the main road safety projects in Korea, there has been a lack of effort analyzing the traffic accident reduction effects of this project. In this study, therefore, we selected 4,171 road black spots from 2004 to 2013 and investigated the traffic accident reduction effects of 5 road safety facilities by using "Comparison Group(C-G)" method. Through the analysis, it was found that the number of traffic accidents were lowered by 4.45% with traffic islands, 32.17% with road paved markers, and 24.13% with speed cameras, respectively. However, 0.61% with pedestrian fencing and 1.67% with skid resistant pavement were increased on the other hand. In addition, we also analyzed traffic accident reduction facilities' performance on specific types of collision mentioned in manual on road safety facilities by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. It was shown that the number of bad weather traffic accidents were reduced by 52.96% with road paved markers, pedestrians accidents were reduced by 62.77% with pedestrian fencing and rear-end collisions were reduced by 26.00% with skid resistant pavement.

  • Tubular markers for road safety facilities are used to lead the driver's sight line and separate the lanes on the road. Such tubular markers are usually installed on the road and frequently hit by vehicles, they are accordingly requested to assure the product durability. The traditional evaluation method of tubular markers include only quality tests of the material properties. However, most of consuming agencies in charge of road management at fields have proposed problems on long-term performance of the products hit by vehicles under various weather conditions. Therefore, the objectives of this study are to develop the reliability test methods and equipments to simulate the product failures of tubular markers due to vehicle collision and wheel compression and the delamination and discoloration of reflection sheets attached on the surface of the products under high and low temperatures.

  • Traffic accidents occur due to complex influences of transportation companies, drivers, and road environment. This study found that education and surroundings for transportation companies, driving habits of drivers, and road safety facilities and accessory facilities were main factors that affected strongly traffic accidents. Also, it found that driving habits of drivers could affect accidents heavily more than two other factors. Road safety and accessory facilities were analysed that they affected traffic accidents independently with transportation companies and their own drivers. Therefore, in order to achieve a traffic accident prevention as our main target, those companies need to produce atmosphere that their own drivers can have safety awareness, and related institutions for the above target should run parallel with policy assistance and strict traffic enforcement. In the end, this study suggests that transportation companies should secure manpower wholly being charged with traffic safety and financial resources investing in it.

  • In the past, various studies have been conducted on safety facility installation standards and road safety indices. But there are limitations in applying them to the field, such as using many survey items and variables that are difficult to use. Therefore, this study attempted to develop road safety judgment indicators considering the applicability of the research results and to prepare criteria for installing safety facilities. As part of the study, data of related systems were reviewed, and the use of variables already in use was figured out. Furthermore, the road safety judgment indicators reflecting traffic, road, and accident factors were developed through correlation and factor analysis. Later, the criteria score for determining the installation of safety facilities was derived through cluster analysis. The analyses suggested, that the installation judgment criterion score at the intersection was lower than that of the single road(crosswalk), and the road risk at the intersection was higher.

  • The purpose of this study is to construct a virtual reality simulation environment for searching and evaluating evaluation criteria for road safety facilities with new technologies. Virtual reality simulation requires high realism and accurate behavior data extraction. To do this, we used the Unreal Engine to create the environment by dividing it into an external environment and a vehicle environment. After that, a sample simulation for the luminescent road markers and preliminary experiments were conducted. As a result, luminescent road markers showed better 5m interval than 10m interval. It can be confirmed that it can be used in the simulation for searching the evaluation criteria for the new road safety facilities that incorporate the new technology in the future. In the future, it will be possible to simulate various environments by adding modeling and sample components for other road facilities.

  • In road tunnel, in order to prevents an accident and minimize the damage of an accident in the case of fire, safety facilities and equipments are integral parts. The type and amount of safety facilities are based on tunnel type and length, traffic flow rate, etc. Therefore many countries use a tunnel classification system that categories tunnel into groups, and specifies the necessary emergency equipment for each group. In this study, for the purpose of classifying tunnel based on tunnel ist investigated the domestic and foreign standards and regulations for safety of road tunnel. As a results, we suggest the method of classification of tunnel by traffic performance, tunnel grade, the volume of traffic, fraction of HGV, rules or regulations for transports of dangerous good through tunnel.

  • Recently, starting with the deep underground road construction plan in Seobu Expressway, Korea, there area many studies on deep underground roads to be newly built. However, there is an extreme lack of safety standards, which does not consider traffic conditions and road driving characteristics. Therefore, this study reviewed safety elements to reflect in the deep underground road planning by analyzing driving stability of longitudinal tunnels with road environments, which resemble deep underground roads. For comprehensive analysis, the characteristics and causes of the accidents that have occurred in seven longitudinal tunnels with a length of 2km or over in Gangwon area, were collected. Specifically, geometric structures and facilities of each tunnel were investigated. Also, the present state of facility installation and the changes in driving speed of vehicles passing through each tunnel were observed to analyze the causes for the traffic accidents in each tunnel and accident reduction alternatives. It was revealed that the most frequent accidents in the tunnels resulted from the changes of traffic flow due to the abrupt speed reduction of forward vehicles, or the failure in speed control of following vehicles during the traffic congestion situation. Moreover, installing facilities such as plane and longitudinal curves, median strips and marginal strips seem to induce consistent driving speed. These results mean that for accident prevention, speed management must be preceded and there is a need to develop and introduce safety facilities actively to control the driving flow of forward and following vehicles.
