  • The staff given with chair to Yi Gyeong-seok, senior official over 70 years old by King Hyeonjong of Joseon Dynasty is representative handcraft of Joseon Dynasty. Results of analysis on the metallic decoration show that the metallic ornament of the end part which is connected to the spade was made by rolling of iron plate and brass plating. The plated part is limited to the ornament of the end part connected to the spade and the plating was not applied to the spade. Brass including 20% zinc was used for the connecting part of guard while brass gilded iron was used for the spade. This suggests that the tone of the connecting part of the guard and the spade was not different for reason of visual harmonization. Potential applied plating method can be amalgam, dippping in molten brass, and brushing but the analysis result suggests that dipping in molten brass method is the most likely accepted method. The brass guard of knife was joined by tin-lead solder. Rivet used to fix the blade was made by pure iron as an optimum material which satisfies flexibility and strength.

  • Flood frequency estimate is an essential index for determining the scale of small and middle hydraulic structure. However, this flood quantity could not be estimated directly for practical design purpose due to the lack of available flood data, and indirect method like design rainfall-runoff method have been used for the estimation of design flood. To give the good explain for design flood estimates, regional flood frequency analysis was performed by flood index method in this study. First, annual maximum series were constructed by using the collected data which covers from Japanese imperialism period to 1999. Wakeby distribution recommended by WMO(1989) was used for regional flood frequency analysis and L-moment method by Hosking (1990) was used for parameter estimation. For the homogeneity of region, the discordance and heterogeneity test by Hosking and Wallis(1993) was carried for 4 major watersheds in Korea. Physical independent variable correlated with index flood was watershed area. The relationship between specific discharge and watershed area showed a type of power function, i.e. the specific discharge decreases as watershed area increases. So flood quantity according to watershed area and return period was presented for each watershed(Han rivet, Nakdong river, Geum river and Youngsan/Seomjin river) by using this relation type. This result was also compared with the result of point frequency analysis and its regionalization. It was shown that the dam construction couldn't largely affect the variation of peak flood. The property of this study was also examined by comparison with previous studies.

  • An adhesive can be used to connect two different materials in structures. In comparing with other connecting methods, such as bolt, rivet, and hot melting, the adhesive does not need to use them. It leads to reduce the weight and decrease the stress concentration along the connecting line. This work studied the comparison of mechanical and interfacial properties of commonly-used two adhesives, acrylic type and bisphenol-A epoxy type. Tensile and flexural strength of neat adhesives were also compared. Lap shear test of two adhesives was deduced from the measurement of tensile and fatigue tests. After testing, the failure patterns of adhesive surfaces were observed by a microscope. Tensile strength and mechanical fatigue resistance at using bisphenol-A epoxy adhesive were better than acrylic adhesive. Also adding CNT reinforcement in epoxy adhesive can anticipate mechanical improvement.

  • This study analyzed 19 samples of harness fittings and pendants, which were excavated in Tomb No. 15 in Songhyeon-dong, Changnyeong. Harness fittings and pendants are used for ostentation, rather than practicality, and were excavated from ancient tombs in Gaya culture. So, they are considered artifacts that compare the production techniques and raw materials. This study aimed to examine the production techniques and provenience studies of Bihwa Gaya, which is estimated to be from the 5th to 6th centuries. According to the research, harness fittings were made of pure copper and were gilded with Au·Ag alloys on their surfaces. Hg was detected together and plated with a mercury amalgam method. As a result of the pendant (fish scales-pattern, oval and fish-tail shape), analysis showed that Fe in the background metal, Cu in the middle layer, and Au and Ag on the surface were the main components. The method of adhesion between Cu and Au·Ag gilded layers are plated by a mercury amalgamation method. So, it was identified by the gilt-iron·gold·bronze technique. Since the pendant (heart shaped) is found to be the main component of Fe in the background metal and Ag in the surface layer, the metal was made gilt-iron·silver technique. The background metal and gilding were additionally fixed using a rivet. The raw materials of 3 harnesses excavated from Changnyeong are plotted in zone 2 in the southern Korean Peninsula. And 16 harnesses were plotted in Chinese copper ore by Mabuchi Hishao in the Chinese Peninsula.

  • In this study, the analysis of plate under torsion was carried out according to stacking angle at the unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced plastic(UD CFRP) among composite materials. In case of UD CFRP, the material property due to stacking angle becomes different. Also, the stacking angles were designated to 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75° and 90° at the study models. The notch hole was applied at the center part by supposing that rivet or hole was used. The analysis method was used by applying the experimental method at ISO 15310. Two jigs were fixed at the lower part and two jigs were descending at the upper part. As seen by the analysis result values at this study, the shear stress happening at the fracture part was seen with the lowest value in case of the stacking angle of 45°. It is known that the case of the stacking angle of 45°has the structural safety and durability higher than those of the other stacking angles when the torsion applies. It is thought that this result can be applied to the data of basis which can be devoted to the durability when the torsion is applied at CFRP plate.

  • In order to prepare the fundamental data for the improvement of noisy working environments and the effective hearing conservation program on workers exposed to industrial noise, the authors surveyed the working processes and evaluated the noise levels on 56 manufacturing industries in Pusan area from April to July in 1985. The results were summarized as follows : 1. The noise level was the highest in shipbuilding and repairing(95.6 dBA), and followed by steel rolling(94.0 dBA), manufacture of motor vehicles(93.1 dBA), manufacture of fishing nets(92.9 dBA), manufacture of testiles(92.5 dBA), iron and steel foundries(89.3 dBA), manufacture of metal products(89.1 dBA), preserving and processing of marine foods(87.0 dBA), manufacture of rubber products(85.3 dBA), manufacture of plywood(84.9 dBA) and manufacture of paints(84.5 dBA). 2. Among fifty surveyed working processes, the noise level of twenty-one processes (42%) exceeded the threshold limit value for 8 hours per day. 3. As the allowable exposure times by governmental threshold limit values to industrial noise level(dBA), cocking of shipbuilding and repairing and plating(CGL) of steel rolling were the shortest(30 minutes), and followed by assembling(rivet) of manufacture of motor vehicles(1 hour) weaving of manufacture of textiles and shot, machine, pipe laying of shipbuilding and repairing(2 hours). 4. By the result of octave band analysis on noisy working processes in excess of 90 dBA, the sound level was the highest at 2,000 Hz or 4,000 Hz. 5. It was recognized that the measurement of overall sound pressure level was also effective as octave band analysis in evaluating the industrial noise.

  • The purpose of this study was to classify the types of tweezers used across time and to examine the social culture of periods through the use of tweezers. Chapter II summarized the terms for tweezers and looked at the use of tweezers in two cases related to the social culture and politics of a period. The first is the use of tweezers for beauty purposes. Men used tweezers as a kind of self-management to maintain their social status and power, and thus they helped develop a wide range of tweezers cultures. People with gray hair are usually old. The perception that we should step down from politics when we are aged has become strong. Therefore, politicians pulled out gray hairs with tweezers to maintain only black hair and show youth, which indicates that their social influence is still strong. The second is the use of tweezers for first aid. Chapter III classified tweezers by type during the Goryeo and Joseon periods. The tweezers are largely divided into basic and composite types. The basic type of tweezers is a form that has been continued since the Three Kingdoms Period and consists of tongs and handles, and a fixed type of tweezers with a fixed ring appeared. Composite tweezers are made by grafting earpick or multipurpose knives. Composite tweezers are all-in-one tweezers with an earpick and an all-in-one knife. Tweezers are usually all-in-one. Among the composite tweezers, rivet separation and ring separation are characterized by separation, unlike the all-in-one tweezers. The method of connecting is divided into rivets and connection rings. The all-in-one tweezers appear only during the Goryeo Dynasty and are characterized by the lifestyle that provides a glimpse of the tastes of contemporary users. The manufacturing takes shape after making a thin metal plate. Decorative techniques are carved on soft metal tweezers, such as silver and bronze with a line, point, and a pressed angle. These tweezers are presumed to have been used by the royal family or aristocrats. However, most tweezers are made of strong bronze or iron. Therefore, the majority of simple X-shaped patterns are sampled or without patterns. The biggest reason why there are such diverse types of tweezers is that the culture of tweezers was widespread regardless of the times. In addition, the basic type of tweezers has been used since the Three Kingdoms Period and has been modified and used together as necessary because the shape of tweezers is a practical daily tool. Study of metal crafts have been limited to royal objects and Buddhist crafts. We hope that research on everyday tools such as tweezers will continue to serve as an opportunity to examine the social and cultural aspects of the times in various ways.
