  • This study evaluated the runoff data collected at 12 stream gauge stations of the Chungjoo dam basin using the IHACRES model. Especially, the geomorphology-related parameters of the IHACRES model could be quantified base on the regionalization technique, which have also been applied many stream gauge stations of the Chungjoo dam basin. Summarizing the results is as follows. (1) The climate-related parameters of the IHACRES model c, $\tau_w{^0}$, and f are found to be estimated and used uniformly over the basin. (2) The geomorphology-related parameters of the IHACRES model $t_q,\;t_s,\;and\;v_s$ are found to be estimated by considering the geomorphological parameters like the basin area, channel length, channel slope, basin slope through the regionalization based on the regression analysis. (3) Using the climate-related parameters applied uniformly over the basin and the geomorphology-related parameters estimated based on the regionalization procedure for each stream gauge station, a total of 12 stream gauge stations have been evaluated with their stream flow measurements. As results, the Sanganmi and Youngwal 1 stream gauge stations have been found to make high quality flow data, but Youngwal, Baekokpo, and Panwoon stations low quality flow data. On the whole, 12 stream gauge stations considered show large differences with their data quality, so a plan for securing more consistent data quality should be prepared imminently.

  • Rainfall-runoff process is under the control of hydrologic parameters having temporal and spatial variety. Accordingly, it is difficult to efficiently deal them since many parameters and various information are required to perform hydrologic simulation. So the purposes of this study is to estimate the runoff volume by frequency using GIS techniques and NRCS method. The analysis of frequency rainfall is analyzed using FARD 2002 program and the result of goodness of fit test show that Log-pearson type III is suitable distribute type for the applied area. TOPAZ program used for the analysis of DEM data examining into geological characteristic. NRCS curve numbers estimated using landuse map and soil map for the estimation of effective rain fall in the basin. The storm Type II and Type III were used as the type for the application of NRCS. The result of application show that the runoff volumes above 80 years frequency in return period have similar patterns regardless of Type II and Type III. In addition, the results of comparison with runoff volumes by frequency in the report of river improvement master plan show that it have similar volumes as the relative errors for them of 80, 100 years frequency are each 7.65%, 5.33%.

  • In this study, not only to present the management plan but also to verify the effectiveness for a area of improving the landscape and the area of creating the base of bio-inhabitation in Tancheon stream concrete embankment where were practised the vegetation-mat measures for greening via monitoring i.e. restoration progress. The results of monitoring, there were a total of 41 taxa, 18 families, 38 species, 3 varieties in 2006, moreover in the 2007, there were a total of 59 taxa, 19 families, 56 species, 3 varieties and in the period 2008, 64 taxa, 29 families, 59 species, 8 varieties. Therefore, these site has increased the plant spaces year by year. The distribution of vegetation characteristics shows that Miscanthus sacchariflorus and Pennisetum alopecuroides expands their influence in the area of applying the construction method. Those area appears a diversity of native species by the stream deposition at the flood. Thus, its condition is very soundly ecological health and eco-friend. At present, native species have been dominant, however, disturbed species and invasive species can be expected to increase dramatically in the future. Therefore, it is necessary to a long-range monitoring and management for maintaining an environmentally sound aquatic ecosystem. On this area refer to mix the river vegetation of primary succession and disturbed vegetation. For that reason, the method of constructing the vegetation-mat measures for greening in embankment does not need to remove the concrete and can install a coir-mat on the top. It leads to improve the landscape, moreover, it was analysed the such dramatic changes in the vegetation species richness by providing continuous the plant growth basis have a impact on in bio-diversity.

  • In order to figure out hydrodynamic and water quality changes after completion of dike construction of the Saemangeum, which behaves as a semi-enclosed estuarine lake, numerical simulations based on fine grid structure by using EFDC were intensively carried out. In this study some limitations of precedent study has been improved and gate operation were considered. Also 3 phases such as air-water-sediment interaction modeling was considered. It is clear that inner mixing of the Saemangeum is dominated by Mankyeong and Dongjin riverine discharges rather than the gate opening influence through the Lagrangian particle tracking simulations. Vertical DO structure after the dike completion shows steep gradient especially at Dongjin river estuary due to lessen of outer sea water exchange. Increasing SOD at stagnantly changed man-made reservoir might cause oxygen deficiency and accelerating degradation of water quality. According to TSI evaluation test representing eutrophication status, it shows high possibility of eutrophication along Mankyeong waterway in spite of dike completion, while the index is getting high after final closing along Dongjin waterway. Numerical tests with gate operations show significant differences in water quality. Thus it should be noted that proper gate operation plays a major role in preserving target water quality and management for inner development plan.

  • The extreme 2017 spring drought affected a large portion of South Korea in the Southern Gyeonggi-do and Chungcheongnam-do districts. This drought event was one of the climatologically driest spring seasons over the 1961-2016 period of record. It was characterized by exceptionally low reservoir water levels, with the average water level being 36% lower over most of western South Korea. In this study, we consider drought response methods to alleviate the shortage of agricultural water in times of drought. It could be to store water from a stream into a reservoir. There is a cyclical method for reusing water supplied from a reservoir into streams through drainage. We intended to present a decision-making plan for water supply based on the calculation of the quantity of water supply and leakage. We compared the rainfall-runoff equation with the TANK model, which is a long-term run-off model. Estimations of reservoir inflow during non-irrigation seasons applied to the Madun, Daesa, and Pungjeon reservoirs. We applied the run-off flow to the last 30 years of rainfall data to estimate reservoir storage. We calculated the available water in the river during the non-irrigation season. The daily average inflow from 2003 to 2018 was calculated from October to April. Simulation results show that an average of 67,000 tons of water is obtained during the non-irrigation season. The report shows that about 53,000 tons of water are available except during the winter season from December to February. The Madun Reservoir began in early October with a 10 percent storage rate. In the starting ratio, a simulated rate of 4 K, 6 K, and 8 K tons is predicted to be 44%, 50%, and 60%. We can estimate the amount of water needed and the timing of water pump operations during the non-irrigation season that focuses on fresh water reservoirs and improve decision making for efficient water supplies.

  • In recent, increasing of the impervious area gives rise to short concentration time and high peak discharge comparing with natural watershed and it is a cause of urban flood damage. Therefore, we have performed for structural and non-structural plans to reduce the damage from inundation. The Gulpo-cheon basin had been frequently inundated and damaged due to the water level of Han river. So, the Gulpo-cheon floodway was constructed with 20 meters width for flood control in the basin but it was not enough for our expectation and now we have a plan to expand the floodway to 80 meters. We use a XP-SWMM model developed based on EPA-SWMM version for analyzing the capacity of flood conveyance by the expansion of Gulpo-cheon floodway with the same 100 years return period design storm and the same tidal conditions of the Yellow sea. The flood conveyance after the expansion of floodway becomes three times comparing it with before the expansion. Also we simulate the flood discharge at the diversion point of Gulpo-cheon for the expanded condition of floodway and know that the discharge of about 300 m3/sec is flowing backward to the expanded floodway. Therefore we may need some kinds of hydraulic structures to prevent the back water.

  • Recently, we have a growing interest in the washland construction for the function of flood defense in flood season and also as an ecosystem in non flood season. Therefore this study performed the hydraulic and hydrologic analysis for washland construction plan as sustainable flood defense alternative in flood season and wetland application possibility. The study area is Topyoung-cheon basin in Changnyeong-gun, Gyeongnam. A Topyoung-cheon basin includes a Woopo wetland which is the largest nature wetland in Korea and a Topyoung-cheon is ond of the tributaries of Nakdong river. We assume that the artificial washland is constructed in upperstream and downstream of Woopo wetland, and In flood season, the hydraulic analysis for the investigation of the effectiveness of flood level mitigation is performed by HEC-RAS model. Simulation of model is performed from 7 scenarioes of washland construction. As the result in flood season, the flood level is reduced by maximum 0.56 meter as we construct the washlands by 7 scenarios. Also, we performed hydrologic analysis for the investigation of water balance in washland in non flood season using SWAT model. From the result of water balance analysis, we found that the minimum water level of washland was maintained in about 1.3 meter for one year.

  • It is a important problem that the adjustment of a rural settlementas a unit of rural community, and many number of researcher tackled its. The aim of this paper is to verificate the process of rural con-struction, that is applied the regional resources, and to introduce the situation of attending inhabitants, and their employments as a results of this planning. We chose Odaira hamlets in Oomama town, it is located in Gunma prefecture as an object of this study. Odaira is a small village in the mauntain, and it is composed only 135 families. Odaira is an underpopulated hamlet. It is engaged no lively farming and forestry. Most of inhabitants are commuting to the cities around here. Inhabitants of Odaira who are conscious of the conditions of declining hamlet organized a group to improve it. This group have investigated all around the hamlet as a system of workshop. And they found the resources for sight-seeing, crops as the regional products, and other resources for rural planning under three keywords ; resources for the sight-seeing, the rigional products, and theimprovement of environments. In many resources, most important thing was the existens of a stalactite cave come down as a legend from old time. Local government of Oomama town and the inhabitants tried to explorate of stalactite cave and succesed to excavate it. They have constructed two facilities for management, parkaround the stalactite cave and these have been a new place of work for inhabitants. Arrangement of the rural constructions developed to other items schemed acording to the master plan, like as a camping ground, bungalows, a wet botanical garden, and a park beside a river. These also produced the new places of work for 54 people as a result of this rural planning. The most of them were the aged peoples and the women of farmer. The highest age was 83 years old, he is working at the camping ground. In the employment system at Odaira, people who desire to work and desire to employ both registrate to a commission of management of Odaira, and this commission arrange them in case of needs.

  • This study aims to provide preliminary data needed for establishing policies on the environment and disasters of Goryeong county. The main results are as follows. First, the present master plan of the region does not reflect local socio-economic and environmental conditions and the local people's opinion. Second, The air conditions of Gyeongbuk province and Goryeong county are within the permitted limit of air pollution of Korea. Third, the analysis of water pollution index in Nakdong river system shows improvement of water quality in both Andong and Goryeong. Fourth, the conditions of waste collection and disposal are improved in both Gyeongbuk province and Goryeong county. Fifth, in case of environmental pollutant emitting facilities of Gyeongbuk province, the proportion of 1st to 4th grade(relatively much more environmental pollutant emitting quantity than 5th grade) tends to be increasing. Sixth, environmental pollutant emitting facilities of Goryeong county are remarkably increasing in Dasan, Gaegin, Ssangrim, involving industrial complex. Finally, in case of disasters, it is relatively stable in Yecheon, Gumi, Uiseong, Yeongju and Cheongdo, while relatively unstable in Seongju, Gunwi, Yeongcheon, Chilgok, Mungyeong, Bonghwa and Goryeong.

  • This study examined how to determine the optimal sediment level in dam reservoir for efficient plan and operation of dam. Currently, Korea is applying a horizontally accumulated method for sediment level estimation for the safety design of dam and so the method estimated relatively higher level than others. However, the sediment level of dam reservoir should be accurately estimated because it is an important factor in assessing life cycle of a dam. The sediment level in dam reservoir can be determined by SED-2D model linked with RMA-2, horizontally accumulated method, area increment method, and empirical area reduction method. The estimated sediment level from each method was compared with the observed sediment level measured in 2007 in Imha dam reservoir, Korea and then the optimal method was determined. Also, the future sediment level was predicted by each method for the future trend analysis of sediment level. As the results, the most accurate sediment level was estimated by the empirical area reduction method and the future trend of sediment level variation followed the past trend. Therefore, we have found that the empirical area reduction method is a proper one for more accurate estimation of sediment level and it can be validated by the results from a numerical model of SED-2D linked with RMA-2 model.
