Applied methods for seismic assessment of scoured bridges: a review with case studies

  • Flooding induced scour has been long recognized as a major hazard to river-crossing bridges. Many studies in recent years have attempted to evaluate the effects of scour on the seismic performance of bridges, and probabilistic frameworks are usually adopted. However, direct and straightforward insight about how foundation scour affects bridges as a type of soil-foundation-structure system is usually understated. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of applied methods centering around seismic assessment of scoured bridges considering soil-foundation-structure interaction. When introducing these applied analysis and modeling methods, a simple bridge model is provided to demonstrate the use of these methods as a case study. Particularly, we propose the use of nonlinear modal pushover analysis as a rapid technique to model scoured bridge systems, and numerical validation and application of this procedure are given using the simple bridge model. All methods reviewed in this paper can serve as baseline components for performing probabilistic vulnerability or risk assessment for any river-crossing bridge system subject to flood-induced scour and earthquakes.

  • Green landscape plan to the riverfront area of the Han River The Han River, one of the symbolic elements in metropolitan Seoul, structures an axis of waterscape as the openspace crossing east to west of the city of Seoul. As riverside urban motorway(88 Olympic motorway) and riverside public park were constructed by the Han River Comprehensive Development Project in 1986, the necessity of general plan for the in-stallation of envirommental facility belt to conserve living enviroument is being required with relation to, dense residential areas closed to the river Therefore, the goal of the study is to provide better riverview and to increase environmental purifi-cation ability as a large scale waterscape axis by the preparation of landscape plan to the riverfront area of Han River, In order to achieve the goal, the study deals with sectional speciality, the introduction of landscape assessment techniques and ecological approach to given environment. As unity is kept through whole waterfront area, the area is divided into 9 zoning sections to study development methods for each section, and themes for speciality are given to each section, and the. sort of plants which can be symboliged to the area is selected. Also, the planting methods for harmony with the type of road structure and riverscape is offered. Though the study may give significane to the image and the function of riverside road, in con-clusion, the characteristic ecological approach to the river is so limited that has not been reflected enough on the plan. It is expected that the study should be continued, and long-term riverfront openspace plan, environmentally sustainable, should be arepared.

하천의 물리 환경성 평가체계의 적용 - 도시하천을 중심으로 - (An Application of Physico-Environmental Evaluation System of Stream - Focusing on urban streams -)

  • The purpose of this study is to present the basic data for restoration of physical stream environment by analyzing habitat variables because habitat environment is changed due to the construction of waterfront space in urban streams. Assessment results of 10 habitat variables(three divisions) were almost same as optimal condition, in the reach of reference stream where there are no stream crossing structures and channel alteration. Assessment results of reaches in urban rivers, where streams were improved on water-friendly recreation activities, appeared to be marginal condition. Because habitat environment got worse due to stream improvement works such as construction of weir for water landscape, stepping stones for walking, low water revetment and high water revetment, and high water channel. In addition, in the case of mid gradient stream, the frequency of riffles was small or not existed because the intervals of the river crossing structures was short. In the case of mild stream types, the diversity of the pool was damaged due to the deposition of sludge in the upstream pool of weir and the installation of low water revetment.

금강에서 횡단구조물의 설치와 운영에 따른 하천 서식처의 경관 특성 변화 (Changes in Landscape Characteristics of Stream Habitats with the Construction and Operation of River-Crossing Structures in the Geum-gang River, South Korea)

  • 본 연구에서는 금강에서 횡단구조물의 건설과 운영이 하천 서식처의 경관 특성에 미치는 영향을 규명하기 위하여, 대청댐 하류에서 보 건설과 운영의 영향을 받지 않는 대조구간인 부용리 구간과 세종보, 공주보의 상하류 구간의 총 3개 하천구간을 선정하여 대청댐 건설 전후, 보 건설 전후, 보 개방 전후로 시기를 구분하여 항공사진을 이용해 서식처를 분류하고 경관의 공간 유형을 분석하였다. 금강에서 대청댐 건설 후 나지의 면적은 크게 감소하고 초지와 임지의 면적은 증가하였다. 또한 하천 경관에서 조각의 수는 증가하고 크기는 감소하였으며 경관형태지수와 서식처 다양성지수는 증가하였다. 따라서 댐 건설이후에 하류에서 나지 서식처가 식생 서식처로 변하였고 서식처가 파편화되고 다양화되었다. 4대강사업에 따른 보 축조의 영향으로 세종보와 공주보 구간에서 개방 수면이 각각 18%, 90%가 증가하였고, 개방수역의 경관형태지수가 각각 32%, 35%가 감소하였으며 서식처 다양도지수가 25%, 24%로 감소하였다. 따라서 보 건설에 따라서 개방수면이 확대되며, 서식처의 형태가 단순화되고 다양성이 감소하였다. 보 개방 후에는 보 건설 후 사라졌던 나지가 다시 나타나고, 육역 서식처와 개방 수면의 경관형태지수와 서식처 다양도지수가 증가하였다. 따라서 보 개방에 의하여 서식처의 경관 특성이 보 건설 이전으로 회복되는 것으로 나타났다. 다만, 보 개방의 효과가 보 하류에서는 보 상류보다 지연되었다. 하천에서 횡단구조물의 건설에 의하여 하천 서식처에서 경관 구조의 특성이 변화하였으나, 이들 구조물의 운영에 의하여 서식처 환경을 회복할 수 있으므로 구조물의 생태적 운영에 대한 체계적인 기술 개발이 필요하다고 생각된다.

전남(全南) 보성강(寶城江) 유역(流域)에 분포(分布)하는 중사광상(重砂鑛床)의 지질(地質) 및 선광(選鑛)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) (A Study on the Geology and Ore Dressing of Heavy Mineral Placer Deposits along the Boseong River, Jeonranamdo)

  • The surveyed Boseong river, flows from south to north crossing Boseong gun Mirukg myon, Nodong myon, Yuleo myon, Bocgnae myon, Mundeog myon, and Seungju gun Nam myon, Jeonranam do. The geology of the surveyed area consists of age-unknown composite gneiss and schist, crystaline chlorite gneiss, porphyroblastic gneiss and granite gneiss, and metasediments of Myon Bong formation and Seologri formation. These metamorphic rocks are intruded by cretaceous biotite granite, granodiorite, and quartz diorite. The heavy sands occur in Quarternary alluvium and colluvium. The composition of the river bed is sand 60%, gravel 30%, and clay 10%. The gravel content of the river bed decreases as the increases. The average depth of auger boring is 0.87 m. The average heavy mineral composition of the heavy sand is monazite 6.83%, zircon 4.88%, ilmenite 11.36%, magnetite 8.36% and garnet 4.84%. The best heavy minerals separation procedure would be primary treatment of the sand by humphrey spiral and table, and retreatment of the table concentrate by magnetic separator. The minimum economically feasible capacity of gravity and magnetic separation plant would be 500 ton/hr when only the heavy minerals are recovered but it may be reduced to 100 ton/hr. capacity, if gravels and sands are added to the valuable products.

V자형 낙차공 모형 직하류 국부세굴공 발생특성에 관한 실험적 연구 (Experimental Study on the Characteristics of Local Scour Hole Downstream of V-shaped Drop Structure Model)

  • 대표적인 하천횡단구조물 중 하나인 낙차공은 하천하상의 안정을 목적으로 설치되지만 이는 하천환경의 연속성을 차단하고, 수생태환경의 파괴를 야기하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 생태통로로서의 기능을 갖는 저낙차 자연형 낙차공을 모형으로 제작하여 실험실 실험을 수행하고, 적절한 지배인자 사이의 관계를 도출하여 국부세굴공 규모의 예측식을 제안하였다. 직선형과 6가지 상향 V 자형의 낙차공 모형에 대하여 각각 실험유량은 4가지로 총 28개의 조건에 대해서 실험을 수행하였다. 각각의 실험조건별 세굴실험 결과를 바탕으로 기존에 제안된 세굴심 추정식을 적용한 결과보다 최대세굴심이 다소 크게 발생함을 확인하였다. 따라서 낙차공 직하류부에서 발생하는 세굴공 발생 주요인자들 사이의 상관관계를 분석한 결과, 낙차공으로의 유입흐름 특성과 낙차공의 높이, 낙차공의 총횡단길이와의 상관관계가 높게 나타남을 확인하였다. 또한 이를 토대로 각 실험조건별 세굴심과 세굴길이에 상관관계가 높다고 판단되는 변수들을 무차원화하여 최대세굴공의 깊이와 길이 산정식을 각각 제안하였다. 향후 추가적으로 다양한 하상토 재료와 수심변화를 고려한 실험적 연구 및 수치해석 연구를 병행하여 보다 정확한 세굴심 산정식을 도출할 수 있다.

지형요소를 활용한 전라도 논매기소리의 공간분포와 전파에 관한 연구: 아리시고나 류, 산아지 곡, 방게 류를 사례로 (A Study on the Spatial Distribution and Diffusion of Rice-paddy Weeding Songs Using the Geomorphic Elements in Jeolla-do: A Case of Arishigona, Sanaji and Bang-gae)

  • In this study, the effect on the spatial distribution and diffusion of Arishigona, Sanaji and Bang-gae appearing in Jeolla-do was analyzed using geomorphic elements. Based on result, the AriShigona is distributed in the western plains of the Yeongsan River basin and around from the Noryeong mountain range to Mudeung mountain range, the Sanaji is mainly diffused in the middle and upper parts of the Seomjin River and the lower parts of the Mangyeong River, Dongjin River and the Boseong River basin, and the Bang-gae is found to be distributed in the Seomjin River and the upper part of the Yeongsan River basin. Although the cultural centers of these Rice-paddy Weeding Songs are different but they appear to have a similar distribution pattern in Jeolla-do. This is used as a diffusion path of cultural elements by crossing lineaments in various directions and serving bridge role at the same time. However, in the region where the lineaments do not intersect, the continuity of Rice-paddy Weeding Songs are relatively low, which are considered to be reflected in the spatial distribution and propagation of the sound due to the influence of the drain network rather than the lineament. The results of this study can provide basic data for spatial distribution of Rice-paddy Weeding Songs, and regionality and cultural division by diffusion characteristics.

초고강도 콘크리트 Ductal을 이용한 선유도연결 보행전용교량의 설계와 시공 (Design and Construction of Sunyudo Pedestrian Bridge Using Ultra-High Performance Concrete, Ductal)

  • This paper describes the design and construction of main Arch bridge using Ultra-high performance concrete, Ductal in the Sunyudo pedestrian bridge project. Ductal is a new family of cementing materials with remarkable properties. Its mechanical characteristics reach unique values, with compressive strength in industrial use of 180 to 230 MPa and bending tensile strength of 50 to 80 MPa. By the use of Ductal, main Arch bridge crossing the Han-river is designed to the span 120m-long with optimized $\pi$ shape section.
