Variable Optical Fiber Attenuator Using Bending-Sensitive Fiber (굽힘에 민감한 광섬유를 이용한 가변 광 감쇄기)

  • A variable optical attenuator with a bending-sensitive fiber (BSF) that can be used in optical networks is developed. The proposed BSF consists of inner core, outer core, center dip and cladding. The proposed BSF is also very sensitive to mechanical perturbation, such as bending and pressure, making the light propagating in the BSF easily controlled and attenuated. The fabricated fiber-type variable optical attenuator using the proposed BSF (VOAFB) consisted of the BSF in a rectangular rubber ring with a fixed bend radius (BR) in a steady state. The variable optical attenuator using the proposed BSF (VOAFB) was able to attenuate the optical power by more than about -38㏈ with the gradient -88.4[㏈$.$$cm^{-1}$ /] at (1540∼1560nm) based m adjusting the mechanical pressure applied to the upper surface of the rectangular rubber ring with the bent BSF. According to the experimental results when using the proposed VOAFB, the optical power was easily controlled by adjusting mechanical pressure and produced an insertion loss of 0.68㏈, polarization loss of 0.5㏈, and return loss of less than -60㏈.

  • This study focuses on the design of the tapered joints of a wind power turbine. The main variables of the tapered joint are the transmitted torque, shaft diameter, contact area of the tapered ring, and tightening torque of the bolts, which applies a compressive pressure from the hub to the shaft. The stress distribution of the taper fit was calculated under axisymmetric plane strain conditions because of the small taper angle. The axial displacement of the clamp can be calculated from the radial elastic deformation and the taper angle. The stress field of each ring is obtained from the cylinder stress equation. To verify the accuracy of the calculation, finite element (FE) analysis was performed, and the results of the calculation and FE analysis were compared. The hoop stress of the tapered surface showed a discrepancy of approximately 10, but the trends of the stress distributions of each component and the relative movement obtained by FE analysis were in good agreement with the analytical calculation results.

  • Nitridation technique has been receiving much attention for the formation of a thin nitrided buffer layer on which high quality nitride films can be formedl. Particularly, gallium nitride (GaN) has been considered as a promising material for blue-and ultraviolet-emitting devices. It can also be used for in situ formed and stable passivation layers for selective growth of $GaAs_2$. In this work, formation of a thin nitrided layer is investigated. Nitrogen electron cyclotron resonance(ECR)-plasma is employed for the formation of thin nitrided layer. The plasma source used in this work is a compact ECR plasma gun3 which is specifically designed to enhance control, and to provide in-situ monitoring of plasma parameters during plasma-assisted processing. Microwave power of 100-200 W was used to excite the plasma which was emitted from an orifice of 25 rnm in diameter. The substrate were positioned 15 em away from the orifice of plasma source. Prior to nitridation is performed, the surface of n-type (001)GaAs was exposed to hydrogen plasma for 20 min at $300{\;}^{\circ}C$ in order to eliminate a native oxide formed on GaAs surface. Change from ring to streak in RHEED pattern can be obtained through the irradiation of hydrogen plasma, indicating a clean surface. Nitridation was carried out for 5-40 min at $RT-600{\;}^{\circ}C$ in a ECR plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy system.   • Compared to sintered polycrystalline diamond (PCD), the deposited thin film diamond has a great advantage on the fabrication of cutting tools with complex geometries such as drills. Because of high performance in high speed machining non-ferrous difficult-to-cut materials in the field of automobiles industry, aeronautics and astronautics industry, diamond-coated drills find large potentialities in commercial applications. However, the poor adhesion of the diamond film on the substrate and high surface roughness of the drill flute adversely affect the tool lift and machining quality and they become the main technical barriers for the successful development and commercialization of diamond-coated drills. In this paper, diamond thin films were deposited on the commercial WC-Co based drills by the electron aided hot filament chemical vapor deposition (EACVD). A new multiple coating technology based on changing gas pressure in different process stages was developed. The large triangular faceted diamond grains may have great contribution to the adhesive strength between the film and the substrate, and the overlapping ball like blocks consisted of nanometer sized diamond crystals may contribute much to the very low roughness of diamond film. Adhesive strength and quality of diamond film were evaluated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), Raman spectrum and drilling experiments. The ring-block tribological experiments were also conducted and the results revealed that the friction coefficient increased with the surface roughness of the diamond film. From a practical viewpoint, the cutting performances of diamond-coated drills were studied by drilling the SiC particles reinforced aluminum-matrix composite. The good adhesive strength and low surface roughness of flute were proved to be beneficial to the good chip evacuation and the decrease of thrust and consequently led to a prolonged tool lift and an improved machining quality. The wear mechanism of diamond-coated drills is the abrasive mechanical attrition.

  • The minimum oil film thickness(MOFT) in the connecting-rod bering of a 1.5 liter, L-4, gasoline engine is measured up to 5500 rpm and calculated to study the dynamically loaded engine bearing. Short bearing approximation and Mobility method are used for theoretical analysis of oil film charactrtistics. And cylinder pressure, crank-pin surface temperature and bearing tenp ture are measured as the input data of theoretical analysis. The MOFT are measured by the total capacitance method(TCM). To improve the reliability of the test results, a reasonable detmuuination method of bearing clearance is introduced and used, and the effects of cavitation and aeration on the test results are neglected. The crankshaft is grounded by means of a slip ring. A scissor type linkage system was developed to measure the MOFT and bearing temperature. The effects of engine speed, load and oil viscosity on the measured and calculated minimum oil film thicknesses are investigated at 1500 to 5500 rpm. From the comparison between the measured and calculated MOFT, it is found that a qualitative similarity exists between them, but in all cases, the measured MOFT are smaller than those calculated.

  • This work focuses on finding out the noise source and the method of reducing the noise level of LPG(liquefied petroleum gas) fuel injector. The noise of LPG injector in operating condition is due to the impact between valve and valve seat. This study shows that if the revolution of engine is increased, the noise of LPG injector will be more serious but it is not nearly affected by the increment of fuel pressure. The source and transmission paths of noise are identified through the analysis of noise generation mechanism and noise spectrum. The sound absorbing material is tested to verify its efficiency of sound absorption thor the LPG injector. The effect of noise reduction of absorbing material is remarkable when the engine speed is high. Consequently two methods of reducing the noise level are suggested from the identified results. The one is to equip the absorbing material on the outer side of injector and the other is to coat with a soft material or equip a soft ring on the surface of impact.

Preparation of Pore-filled Anion-exchange Membrane with PVDF and Poly(vinylbenzylchloride)

  • The pore-filled anion-exchange membranes were prepared in this study with an asymmetric poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF) membrane as a nascent membrane and poly(vinylbenzyl chloride)(PVBCl) as a polyelectrolyte. The solution of PVBCI having the chloromethylate aryl ring of 80 percents and 1,4-diaminobicyclo [2,2,2]octane(DABCO) was made with the solvent of tetrahydrofuran(THF) and N,N-Dimethylformamide(DMF), which is in the rotio of 8:2. A new preparation method in this study, i.e. in-situ crosslinking, enabled us to produce the pore-filled membranes without change of size, and to control the properties of final membrane with various degree of cross-linking. From the result of surface morphologies of SEM and AFM the polyelectrolyte exists in the pores of nascent membrane as a certain configuration. From the investigation of the solvent affecting much to the permeability and rejection, it was found. that the membranes using DMF and THF showed better performances than the membranes produced by THF only. The water permeability of the final membrane at low pressure(100㎪) showed a typical ultrafiltation membrane's permeability (8-10kg/㎡hr) and good values of rejection(55∼60 percent).

Distribution Model Based on Computer Simulation for Internal Temperature and Moisture Content in Press Drying of Tree Disks (원판(圓板)의 열판건조(熱板乾燥)에서 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션에 의한 내부온도(內部溫度)와 함수율(含水率) 분포모형(分布模型))

  • This study was executed to find the applicability of press drying of tree disk by investigating the shrinkage and drying defect and to form appropriate model by comparing the actual moisture content(MC) and internal temperature in respect of drying time with calculated values based computer simulation to which was applied finite difference method. In press drying disk, heating period, constant drying rate period maintained plateau temperature at 100$^{\circ}C$ and falling drying rate period were significantly distinguished. Actual MC and internal temperature were analogous to those calculated at comparing points. Heat transfer model formed by Fourier's law using specific heat of moist wood and conduction coefficient considering fractional volume of each element of wood cell wall, bound water, free water and air showed applicability as basic data to developing heat expansion, shrinkage and drying stress during press drying. Also mass transfer model formed by Fick's diffusion law using water vapor diffusion coefficient showed applicability. Longitudinal shrinkage was developed by pressure of hot press and tangential shrinkage was restrained by hygrothermal recovery. The heart check, surface check and ring failure were occurred differently in species, but V-shaped crack didn't develop.

  • Aerodynamic forces and moments have been used to control rocket propelled vehicles. If control is required at very low speed, Those systems only provide a limited capability because aerodynamic control force is proportional to the air density and low dynamic pressure. But thrust vector control(TVC) can overcome the disadvantages. TVC is the method which generates the side force and roll moment by controlling exhausted gas directly in a rocket nozzle. TVC is classified by mechanical and fluid dynamic methods. Mechanical methods can change the flow direction by several objects installed in a rocket nozzle exhaust such as tapered ramp tabs and jet vane. Fluid dynamic methods control the flight direction with the injection of secondary gaseous flows into the rocket nozzle. The tapered ramp tabs of mechanical methods are used in this paper. They installed at the rear in the rocket nozzle could be freely moved along axial and radial direction on the mounting ring to provide the mass flow rate which is injected from the rocket nozzle. In this paper, the conceptual design and the performance study on the tapered ramp tabs of the thurst vector control has been carried out using the supersonic cold flow system and shadow graph. Numerical simulation was also performed to study flow characteristics and interactions between ramp tabs. This paper provides to analyze the location of normal shock wave and distribution of surface pressure on the region enclosed by the tapered ramp tabs.
