  • In this paper, two types of wideband 3-dB ring hybrids are compared and discussed to show the ring hybrid with a set of coupled-line sections better. However, the better one still has a realization problem that perfect matching can be achieved only with -3 dB coupling power. To solve the problem, a set of coupled-line sections with two shorts is synthesized using one- and two-port equivalent circuits and design equations are derived to have perfect matching, regardless of the coupling power. Based on the design equations, a modified ${\Pi}-type$ of transmission-line equivalent circuit is newly suggested. It consists of coupled-line sections with two shorts and two open stubs and can be used to reduce a transmission-line section, especially when its electrical length is greater than ${\pi}$. Therefore, the $3\;{\lambda}/4$ transmission-line section of a conventional ring hybrid can be reduced to less than ${\pi}/2$. To verify the modified ${\Pi}-type$ of transmission- line equivalent circuit, two kinds of simulations are carried out; one is fixing the electrical length of the coupled-line sections and the other fixing its coupling coefficient. The simulation results show that the bandwidths of resulting small transmission lines are strongly dependent on the coupling power. Using modified and conventional ${\Pi}-types$ of transmission-line equivalent circuits, a small ring hybrid is built and named a compact wideband coupled-line ring hybrid, due to the fact that a set of coupled-line sections is included. One of compact ring hybrids is compared with a conventional ring hybrid and the compared results demonstrate that the bandwidth of a proposed compact ring hybrid is much wider, in spite of being more than three times smaller in size. To test the compact ring hybrids, a microstrip compact ring hybrid, whose total transmission-line length is $220^{\circ}$, is fabricated and measured. The measured power divisions($S_{21}$, $S_{41}$, $S_{23}$ and $S_{43}$) are -2.78 dB, -3.34 dB, -2.8 dB and -3.2 dB, respectively at a design center frequency of 2 GHz, matching and isolation less than -20 dB in more than 20 % fractional bandwidth.

  • In this study, we developed a reduced 94 GHz hybrid ring coupler on a GaAs substrate in order to demonstrate the possibility of the integration of various passive components and MMICs in the millimeter-wave range. To reduce the size of the hybrid ring coupler, we used multiple open stubs on the inside of the ring structure. The chip size of the reduced hybrid ring coupler with multiple open stubs was decreased by 62% compared with the area of the hybrid ring coupler without open stubs. Performance in terms of the loss, isolation, and phase difference characteristics exhibited no significant change after the use of the multiple open stubs on the inside of the ring structure. The reduced hybrid ring coupler showed excellent coupling loss of $3.87{\pm}0.33dB$ and transmission loss of $3.77{\pm}0.72dB$ in the measured frequency range of 90-100 GHz. The isolation and reflection were -48 dB and -32 dB at 94 GHz, respectively. The phase differences between two output ports were $180^{\circ}{\pm}1^{\circ}$ at 94 GHz.

  • Folded lines are applied to design a compact microstrip ring hybrid. Using the proposed structure we achieve both significant size reduction and good harmonic suppression with the same results of conventional ring hybrid at 2.41GHz. Including the third harmonic frequency, up to 11GHz band harmonics are suppressed to -20dB. The size of the proposed ring-hybrid is reduced to one forth of the conventional ring hybrid. The measured frequency responses agree well with simulated ones.

  • In this paper, a miniaturized ring hybrid circuit is characterized based on a thin film microstrip (TFMS) on low-resistivity silicon. In order to obtain low-loss characteristics, a polyimide layer with 50 $\mu$m thickness is spin-coated onto the silicon to be used for the substrate. First, propagation characteristics of TFMS lines consisting of the ring hybrid circuit are presented. Then, a ring hybrid circuit based on TFMS is featured by employing the triple concentric circle approach for miniaturization. Triple concentric circle lines with $\lambda$$_{g}$/4 or 3$\lambda$$_{g}$/4 line lengths are implemented on the surface of the polyimide by circularly meandering to reduce the circuit size of the designed ring hybrid. Good agreement between measured and simulated results is obtained.

  • This paper presents a method for analyzing and designing an extremely miniaturized planar ring hybrid, using the combination of parallel and diagonally shorted coupled lines. In contrast to conventional miniaturized coupled line filters, it is proven that the required electrical length of transmission line can be largely reduced to even a few degrees, not only effectively suppressing the spurious passband but also approximately maintaining the same characteristic around the stable center frequency. A ring hybrid filter at center frequency of 1 GHz was fabricated on the FR4 epoxy glass cloth copper-clad plat (CCL) PCB substrate. The insertion loss of a ring hybrid filter with the die area of $30mm{\times}30mm$ is -4.68 dB. Simulated results are well agreed with the measurements.

  • We present a ring hybrid balun with additional two ${\lambda}/4$ short stubs that offers excellent amplitude and phase balance performance. The phase difference which is essentially occurred in $180^{\circ}$ ring hybrid is compensated by a ${\lambda}/4$ short stub in one output port. To compensate the amplitude imbalance inherent in the ring hybrid, the series resistance will be added to the second stub which is connected to another output port. The measured balun shows that phase imbalance is less than $2.5^{\circ}$ and magnitude imbalance is less than 0.2dB over a 1.75-2.25 GHz.

  • In this paper, the coupled microstrip lines of hairpin type are applied to design a compact microstrip ring hybrid. When the gap decreases, three attenuation poles are created by coupling between the lines. The proposed structure can achieve a significant reduction of size and suppression of the harmonics. And it has the same frequency responses of conventional ring hybrid at 2.55 GHz. The harmonics are suppressed to below -20 dB up to 12 GHz, including the third harmonic. The ring part size of the proposed ring hybrid is reduced to one forth of the conventional ring hybrid. The measured frequency responses agree well with simulated ones.

  • A modified broad-band ring hybrid balun with additional two shorted $\lambda$/4 stubs is proposed. The proposed balun is a modified version which has additional two shorted $\lambda$/4 stubs to compensate phase and amplitude imbalances of conventional ring hybrid coupler. To demonstrate the validity of the proposed balun, a balanced Schottky-diode frequency doubler is designed and measured. Measurement data show that the proposed frequency doubler has around 10 dB conversion loss and more than 30 dB fundamental suppression over an input range of $1.6{\sim}2.35\;GHz$.

  • Hybrid-type magnetic bearings using both permanent magnets and electromagnets have been used for rotating machinery. In the case of conventional thrust hybrid magnetic bearings supporting axial loads, radially magnetized permanent ring magnets, which have several demerits such as difficult magnetization and assembly, have been used to generate bias flux. In this study, a novel thrust hybrid magnetic bearing using an axially magnetized permanent ring magnet is presented. Because it is easy to magnetize a ring magnet in the axial direction, the segmentation of the ring magnet for magnetization is not required and the assembly process can be simplified. For verifying the performance of the proposed method, a test rig that consists of a proposed thrust magnetic bearing and variable loads is constructed. This paper presents the detailed design procedures and the obtained experimental results. The results show that the developed thrust magnetic bearing has the potential to replace conventional thrust magnetic bearings.
