  • Background: The mandibular third molar (M3) is typically the last permanent tooth to erupt because of insufficient space and thick soft tissues covering its surface. Problems such as alveolar bone loss, development of a periodontal pocket, exposure of cementum, gingival recession, and dental caries can be found in the adjacent second molars (M2) following M3 extraction. The specific aims of the study were to assess the amount and rate of bone regeneration on the distal surface of M2 and to evaluate the aspects of bone regeneration in terms of varying degree of impaction. Methods: Four series of panoramic radiographic images were obtained from the selected cases, including images from the first visit, immediately after extraction, 6 weeks, and 6 months after extraction. ImageJ software® (NIH, USA) was used to measure linear distance from the region of interest to the distal root of the adjacent M2. Radiographic infrabony defect (RID) values were calculated from the measured radiographic bone height and cementoenamel junction with distortion compensation. Repeated measures of analysis of variance and one-way analysis of variance were conducted to analyze the statistical significant difference between RID and time, and a Spearman correlation test was conducted to assess the relationship between Pederson's difficulty index (DI) and RID. Results: A large RID (> 6 mm) can be reduced gradually and consistently over time. More than half of the samples recovered nearly to their normal healthy condition (RID ≤ 3 mm) by the 6-month follow-up. DI affected the first 6 weeks of post-extraction period and only showed a significant positive correlation with respect to the difference between baseline and final RID. Conclusions: Additional treatments on M2 for a minimum of 6 months after an M3 extraction could be recommended. Although DI may affect bone regeneration during the early healing period, further study is required to elucidate any possible factors associated with the healing process. The DI does not cause any long-term adverse effects on bone regeneration after surgical extraction.

  • In the present study, a new analytical method was devised for the simultaneous determination of soluble carbohydrates in soybean seeds using high performance liquid chromatography/evaporative light scattering detection (HPLC/ELSD). The limit of quantification (LOQ) for soybean soluble carbohydrates ranged from 5.6~7.6 mg/kg using the HPLC/ELSD method and from 16.2~33.9 mg/kg using the high performance liquid chromatography/refractive index detection (HPLC/RID) method. Therefore, the HPLC/ELSD method was more sensitive than HPLC/RID. The precision values for retention time and peak area of the HPLC/ELSD method were evaluated by inter-day (n=5) and intra-day (n=10) assays using a standard solution. All precision values (CV<2.5%) for soybean soluble carbohydrates were acceptable and fulfilled international acceptance criteria. All linear calibration curves were obtained with a correlation coefficient of $R^2$ >0.999. The contents of soluble carbohydrates for the "Shingikong" (yellow soybean) and "Cheongjakong 3" (black soybean) samples were analyzed using the HPLC/RID and HPLC/ELSD methods. The difference in carbohydrate contents between the two detection methods was significant. Carbohydrate contents in the HPLC/ELSD method were higher than those in the HPLC/RID method. Overall, the HPLC/ELSD method showed satisfactory resolution with a favorable LOQ and reproducibility. Therefore, these results indicate that the HPLC/ELSD method may be applied to determine the contents of soluble carbohydrates in soybean seeds and related food stuffs.

  • Recent abnormal climate change induces localized heavy rainfall and extreme disasters such as debris flow near urban area. Thus many researches have been conducted to estimate and prevent, especially in focus of physical behavior of debris flow. Even though it is hardly to consider overall related parameters to estimate the extent and degree of directly or indirectly damages due to debris flow. Those analytic restraint would be caused by the diversity and complexity of regional topographic and hydrodynamic characteristics of debris flow inside. We have utilized the Bayesian method to compensate the uncertainty due to the complex characteristics of it after analyzing the numerical results from FLO-2D and field measurement data. Revised values by field measurements will enhance the numerical results and the missing parameters during numerical simulation will be supplemented with this methodology. As a final outcome in this study, the risk index of debris flow damage will be suggested to provide quantitative estimation in terms of hazard protection including the impact on buildings, especially in inner and outer of urban area.

  • It is important for scientific and technological papers to build citation DB and to offer service. The best example of citation DB is SCI that has been utilized in the world. The majority of Korean journals is not SCI journal, so it is impossible for the domestic journals to conduct quantitative analysis and performance evaluation. Korea Science Citation Index Service is the alternative service to get rid of the above problem. In the study, we carried out the user satisfaction survey for new vision of service from existing KSCI, correcting the result data. We evaluated the data and then derived the level of current system and the future improvement direction.

  • An alternative optimal control law formulation is introduced and compared with two different control law, a conventional linear quadratic regulator and the control law based on game theory. This formulation eliminates the undesired modes of the system by the projection of a controller onto the subspace orthogonal to that of the bad modes. In conventional LQR control law, the control performance can be improved only by using proper weighting matrices in performance index, normally, with high cost. The control law formulation by game theory may provide various ways to obtain the desired performance. The control law modified by the elimination of bad modes provides efficient ways to get rid of an undesired performance since it eliminates the exact modes which cause the bad control performance.

  • The ride comfort is one of the important dynamic performances of railway vehicle and is affected by the various factors, such as vibration, sound, temperature, humidity, etc. In general, vibration is known to be a major effect of rode comfort. There are many studies on the evaluation methods of ride comfort in the railway vehicle vibration. Each of the evaluation methods suggested by Spelling and in the standards recommends a different evaluation method and guidance. So users must review whether they can apply it to their railway system or not. In this study, we have suggested the relationship between several evaluation methods using the statistical vibration model based on the experimental data.

  • The purpose of this paper IS to estimate efficiency and loss of productivity under environmental regulation, and analyze the environmental efficiency index empirically. Using the panel data for 20 member countries of OECD during 1985~1999, environmental efficiency index can be constructed by comparing the production processes under alternative assumptions of disposability, by using a hyperbolic measure of productive efficiency. As a result of estimation for the environmental efficiency index, EE of OECD countries gradually shows a downward trend. In terms of the treatment of pollutants, Japan, Germany and France are countries that have a considerable burden in getting rid of the pollutants. In case of EE, Korea displayed high environment efficiency, but in the latter half of the 1990's, the environmental efficiency of Korea became slightly worse. During the same period, Korea had a burden in dealing with NOx just like the other OECD countries.

  • Recently, forest fires have frequently occurred due to climate change, leading to human and property damage every year. The forest fire monitoring technique using remote sensing can obtain quick and large-scale information of fire-damaged areas. In this study, the Gangneung and Donghae forest fires that occurred in March 2022 were analyzed using the spectral band of Sentinel-2, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and the normalized difference water index (NDWI) to classify the affected areas of forest fires. The U-net based convolutional neural networks (CNNs) model was simulated for the fire-damaged areas. The accuracy of forest fire classification in Donghae and Gangneung classification was high at 97.3% (f1=0.486, IoU=0.946). The same model used in Donghae and Gangneung was applied to Uljin and Samcheok areas to get rid of the possibility of overfitting often happen in machine learning. As a result, the portion of overlap with the forest fire damage area reported by the National Institute of Forest Science (NIFoS) was 74.4%, confirming a high level of accuracy even considering the uncertainty of the model. This study suggests that it is possible to quantitatively evaluate the classification of forest fire-damaged area using a spectral band and indices similar to that of the Compact Advanced Satellite 500 (CAS500-4) in the Sentinel-2.

  • This paper introduces a new type of mechanical tape feeder for chip mounter. The mechanical feeder is composed of a pneumatic linear actuator and a linear feeding module with the application of a cam-slider. As semiconductor chips are getting smaller, PCB assembly makers require the feeder to position the chip with high accuracy. The linear feeding system improves the positioning accuracy of the chip by getting rid of the index error, which brings into existence on the sprocket rotating feeder. It also can make greatly reduce the dumping rate. The dumping error is caused by the impact occurred as the pawl to interrupt ratchet wheel rotation. The paper discusses its mechanism and mechanical performance. The positioning accuracy and the dynamic characteristic were measured for long time operation and analyzed. As a result, the feeder showed very good performance. However, the feeding system was dynamically unstable due to the cover film eliminator that is required to be modified

  • We have determined the contents of monosaccharides in the hydrolysates of some yogurt and orange juice products by derivatizing monosaccharides with p-aminobenzoic acid ethyl ester (ABEE). The separation of the ABEE-derivatized monosaccharides was efficiently carried out by HPLC using a microcolumn packed with the Alltima $C_{18}$ stationary phase. The concentrations of monosaccharides were determined based on the measured peak area/height counts. ABEE derivatization of fructose and its detection have never been successfully carried out before this work. In this study, two peaks were observed in a fixed ratio for ABEE-fructose, and the ratio was maintained over a wide range of fructose concentration. In order to prove the validity of the above method, we compared the concentrations of glucose, galactose and fructose determined by ABEE derivatization and UVD (ultraviolet detector) chromatography with those determined by RID (refractive index detector) chromatography without derivatization. The determined concentrations of monosaccharides obtained from the two chromatographic methods were found close to each other within acceptable error ranges.
