  • This paper explores the throughput performance of CSMA/CA-based DCF protocol over frequency-selective, slow Ricean fading channels with both the $E_{b}/N_{o}$ and BER at the MAC layer in the 802.1 la wireless LAN. By exploring the throughput of DCF protocol with the data rate of 6Mbps, 12 Mbps, 24 Mbps and 54 Mbps, we find the fact that the higher the $E_{b}/N_{o}$ be and the less the BER be, the higher the throughput be.

  • The various challenges to realize a fixed wireless ATM network are discussed and some solutions for these challenges are presented. In this paper, the capacity allocation in wireless ATM, the wireless link impact on ATM traffic, and the optimum utilization of the wireless network resonrces for a line of sight (LOS) winless ATM link are studied. An adaptive MQAM modulator is introduced to provide a suitable solution to these issues. The modulator level is adjusted using a unique QoS metric in a wireless network. The metric, termed modified effective bandwidth, takes into account the bandwidth demand, QoS requirements, and outage conditions of the wireless ATM link. A performance study using VBR MPEG-l video traffic in a fixed wireless channel (Ricean channel) demonstrates the advantages of the proposed system.

  • In this two-part paper, we consider dynamic resource allocation in orthogonal frequency division multiple access(OFDMA). To reduce the reverse link overhead for channel quality information(CQI) feedback, a set of sub-carriers are tied up to a sub-channel to be used as the unit of CQI feedback, user-multiplexing and the corresponding power/rate allocation. Specifically, we focus on two sub-channel structures, either aggregated or distributed, where the SNR distribution over a sub-channel is modeled as Ricean in general, and the channel quality of a sub-channel is summarized as the mean and variance of channel gain envelop divided by noise standard deviation. Then, we develop a generalized two step channel/resource allocation algorithm, which uses the two statistical measurements, and analyze the spectral efficiency of the OFDMA system in terms of average frequency utilization. An extension to proportional fair algorithm will also be addressed. As confirmed by numerical results, the aggregated structure is preferred especially when intending aggressive link adaptation.

  • In this paper, we investigate the signal to noise ratio (SNR) estimation performance of Cross quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), which is being used for asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL), very high bit rate digital subscriber line (VDSL), and digital video broadcasting - cable (DVB-C), and has been found to be useful in adaptive modulation and blind equalization. At first, the symbol error rate (SER) performance of Cross QAM is analyzed in Rayleigh fading channel. Then we suggest error vector magnitude (EVM) based SNR estimation utilizing the selected constellation points having different types of decision region from one another, and verify that SNR estimation performance of each points have different performance pattern through simulation. From the simulation results, it has been found that when suggested selected constellation points are used for SNR estimation in Cross QAM, estimation performance is enhanced in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel or Ricean fading channel.

  • This paper is concerning about the demapping method using the pilots inserted in transmitter in COFDM(Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) demodulator which is the standard transmission method of terrestrial digital TV system in Europe(DVB-T). We have presented a simple and efficient method of CSI(Channel State Information) generation and demapping method using CSI. The CSI was derived from the pilot carriers inserted with comb-type among the received active carriers, which is defined as a SNR. From the simulation results for the 3 different constellations of the receiver, we could confirm that the system performance comparing with conventional soft decision method has been improved under DVB-T standard Rayleigh and Ricean fading channel.

  • In part-I of the paper, two sub-channel structures, either contiguous or distributed, were considered. Modeling the SNR distribution over a sub-channel as Ricean in general, the statistical chracteristics were investigated. In this part of the paper, we develop a generalized two step channel/resource allocation algorithm, which incorporates the two statistical measurements, and analyze the spectral efficiency of OFDMA in terms of average frequency utilization for the two sub-channel structures. In OFDMA with distributed structure, the key design parameter would be the sub-channel bandwidth. To give an insight into the impact on this parameter, we show in the numerical results the frequency utilization as a function of sub-channel bandwidth normalized to coherence bandwidth. As confirmed by numerical results, for contiguous sub-channel structure, we obtain the nominal multiuser diversity gain when the sub-channel bandwidth is smaller than the coherence bandwidth and lose the gain as it is getting larger.

  • WLAN virtualization can make multiple simultaneous experiments, each of which is conducted by a separate researcher, share scarce wireless resources in an IEEE 802.11 WLAN. The experiment performed in a virtualized WLAN should be consistent with that in a non-virtualized WLAN. The more similar these two experimental results, the better the consistency. To this end, we propose a novel virtualization scheme that has good consistency by preventing multiple simultaneous experiments from interacting with one another, without any modifications to the IEEE 802.11 standard. Through an intensive simulation study, we confirm that the consistency depends not only on the number of simultaneous experiments but also on wireless channel characteristics such as Doppler frequency and Ricean factor. According to such dependencies, the proposed scheme is optimized, so that it supports good consistency.

  • Adaptive arrays have been proposed as an effective means of mitigating Multiple Access Interference (MAI) and improving the performance of existing and future wireless communication systems. In this paper, we apply the analytical method proposed to analyse the theoretical Mean Bit Error Rate (BER) of an uncoded IS-95 based CDMA system with an array antenna at the BS in a Ricean fading environment. We present a modified expression for the Signal to Interference plus Noise (SINR) ratio as a function of the number of users, number of antennas and noise levels. We also verify the analytical results by means of simulations by considering different user and channel scenarios.

  • Adaptive equalizers are inevitable schemes in digital communication systems for compensating the transmission channel distortion. Additionally, to obtain the required BER(Bit Error Rate), the adaptive algorithms appropriate to the mobile communication channels are required. In this paper, we propose the NPDFE (Noise-Predictive Decision Feedback Equalizer) for communication systems performance improvement in mobile communication channels. The performance of the proposed NPDFE with QPSK (Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) is simulated under AWGN (Additive White Gaussian Noise), Ricean fading, ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) fading, and Rayleigh fading channels. The equalizers used in simulations are a LE (Linear Equalizer), a DFE (Decision Feedback Equalizer), and a NPDFE. Moreover, the equalizer performance criterion of the QPSK is the BER.
