A Phoma sp. was detected on rice seeds and was identified as Phoma sorghina (Sacc.) Boerema, Dorenbosch & Van Kesteren based on their morphological and cultural characteristics. On oatmeal agar, pycnidia were abundant, solitary, scattered or gregarious, subglobose to flask-shaped, usually with a distinct neck and ostiole, glabrous, blackish-brown, 55∼185 ${\times}$ 40∼170 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in size. Conidiogenous cells were monophialidic, hyaline, subglobose to ampulliform, 3∼5 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter. Conidia were ovoid to ellipsoidal, hyaline, unicellular and measured 3.5∼6.0 ${\times}$ 1.5 ∼3.0 $\mu\textrm{m}$ (usually 4.0∼5.0 ${\times}$ 2.0∼2.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$) in size. Chylarnydospores were variable, uni- or multicellular, intercalary or terminal, solitary or in chains, dictyosporous or botryoid. NaOH spot test was positive on malt extract agar. This is the first report of P. sorghina identified on rice seeds in Korea.

To develop a natural re-seeding technology, the optimum soil incorporation time of Chinese milk vetch(CMV) plant residues, seed persistence in soil, biomass production and subsequent rice yield were determined from 2005 to 2007 in rice with CMV green manure in southern Korea. Generally, insufficient seedling stand was regenerated with CMV incorporation to the soil at 20 and 25 days after flowering(DAF), while high regeneration of greater than 400 seedlings per $m^2$ was observed at 35 and 40 DAF. High re-seeding stand of CMV incorporated at 35 DAF or later was related with high seed viability and heavy seed weight. Appreciable number of CMV seeds remained 4 month after burial in soil and a good number of CMV seedlings regenerated from this seed bank at rice harvest time in the fall. Based on the relationships among re-seeding number of CMV plants, seed weight and seed viability, CMV plants should be incorporated into the soil 35 DAF(May 30) or later when CMV seeds were sufficiently matured. The natural re-seeding stand for the 3-year trials was stable ranging from 437 to 700 plants per $m^2$ and the biomass production was sufficient to supply nitrogen for rice growth. The use of re-seeding CMV plant can produce similar rice yield like that of rice without CMV green manure.
Germination is controlled by internal factors of seeds and external factors such as water, temperature and light. We investigated the relationship between germination characteristics of four waxy rice cultivars and patterns of water uptake, antioxidant enzymes and free soluble sugars during early imbibition. Seed viabilities by tetrazolium test of four different rice cultivars were higher than 95% and germination rates of the hulled rice seeds were on 95% average. However, germination rate of intact rice among four cultivars showed a big difference depending on temperature. Water uptake of hulled and intact rice seeds during imbibition reached a stationary phase at around 30% moisture content. Although rates of water uptake were faster in hulled rice and high temperature than intact rice and low temperature condition, difference of those among cultivars was greater under low temperature than high temperature. The time required for rice seeds to uptake 30% water was negatively correlated with percentage of germination, germination energy, germination speed and mean germination time. Guaiacol peroxidase activity at 24h of imbibition was correlated with germination energy and germination speed but not percentage of germination. Catalase activity, soluble protein and maltose concentration at 24h of imbibition were not correlated with characteristics of germination. These results suggest that a time required for rice seeds to uptake 30% of water significantly correlated with germination and guaiacol peroxidase activity during early imbibition plays an important role in initiation of germination.
The effect of differences in grain size on the initial growth of seedlings was studied in rice with two leading varieties of Jaekun and Nongkwang. The grains were classified into three classes of large, medium and small size by their specific gravity. The results observed at seedling stage are summarized as follows. 1. Higher percentage of seeds with larger size was observed to be normally developed into sound seedlings comparing with those with small seeds. This suggests the more effective maintainance of seedings. 2. Seedlings from larger seeds also showed higher values in the number of roots, leaves and tillerings where no varietal difference was observed. 3. Varietal speciality led to the lorger coleoptile of Nongkwang variety, with rather longer plant, than that of Jaekun, while higher value in coleoptile length was observed at the seedlings from larger seeds. 4. Thus larger seeds and the Aariety Nongkwang yielded heavier dry matter of upper part. These trends appeared more clearly at the late seedling stage. 5. There was constant decrease in the dry matter weight per unit coleoptile length until the seedling-selfsupportingstage while after this stage abrupt increase was observed. Seedlings from larger seeds showed higher value in the dry matter weight per unit coleoptile until this stage, thought the differences became insignificant after this stage. And no varietal difference was found.
Germinability, electrophoretic variation of protein of shattered seeds during overwintering and characteristic of main agronomic traits of off-type rice plant occurring in paddy field harvested by combine were investigated. Germinability of shattered seed decreased as time goes in paddy field in both Japonica and Tongil type varieties. Electrophoretic protein bands become more and more light as time goes. Occurrence of off-type rice plant was higher in Japonica varieties than in Tongil type varieties. Off-type rice plant was shorter in plant height, leaf length, tiller number per hill, internode length, panicle length and spike let number per panicle. Germinability of seeds of off-type rice plant as not significantly different compared to the control variety. Yield of off-type plants of Japonica varieties was on average 5.1kg / 10a and that of Tongil type varieties was on average 0.9kg /10a. Mixing ratio to the control variety was about 0.7% in Japonica varieties and that of Tongil type varieties was about 0.1%.
Since there have been no method which can applicable to the screening of commercial sesame oil adulterated with other vegetable oils, the present investigation was carried out particularily focusing on the the pattern of IN absorption of sesame oil and other vegetable oils. For this, a variety of oil samples prepared by the conventional method from sesame seeds, perilla seeds, com, soybean, and rice bran were analyzed by IN spectrophotometer. IN spectra of sesame oil and oil of unheated sesame seeds showed absorption peaks at 215, 230 and 290 nm. While UV spectra of com oil, perilla oil and soybean oil all showed absorption peaks at 215, 230 and 280 nm, that of rice bran oill showed peaks at 215, 290 320 nm. When sesame oil was mixed with com oil, perilla oil or soybean oil, respectively, from which the absorbance of peaks at 290 nm were lower than pure sesame oil. The peak at 320 nm which was typical absorption peak of rice bran oil was still observed in the spectnun of mixture of sesame oil with rice bran oil.

The National Institute of Agricultural Sciences of the Rural Developement Administration (NAS, RDA) is conducting various studies on various crops, such as monitoring the cultivation environment and analyzing harvested seeds for high-throughput phenotyping. In this paper, we propose a deep learning-based rice seed segmentation method to analyze the seeds of various crops owned by the NAS. Using Mask-RCNN deep learning model, we perform the rice seed segmentation from manually taken images under specific environment (constant lighting, white background) for analyzing the seed characteristics. For this purpose, we perform the parameter tuning process of the Mask-RCNN model. By the proposed method, the results of the test on seed object detection showed that the accuracy was 82% for rice stem image and 97% for rice grain image, respectively. As a future study, we are planning to researches of more reliable seeds extraction from cluttered seed images by a deep learning-based approach and selection of high-throughput phenotype through precise data analysis such as length, width, and thickness from the detected seed objects.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of hot water immersion treatment on the control of white tip nematode (Aphelenchoides besseyi) in rice seeds. Disease incidence and yield losses induced by white tip nematode were alos investigated in association with resistance of various rice cultivars. The hot water immersion treatment of rice seeds at $61^{\circ}C$ for 10-15 minutes was effective for the control of the white tip nematode. The stem of most Japonica-type cultivars was damaged by white tip nematode. The Tongil-type cultivars, however, were not infected by the nematode at all. Diseas incidence of Japonica-type cultivars, Odaebyeo and Bogkwangbyeo were 95.6% and 81.8%, respectively. The number of nematodes in infected rice seeds of both Japonica-type and Togil-type cultivars was over 100 per 10gr rice seeds. Although Tongil-type cultivars didn't show white tip symptoms, the yield loss was found in many cultivars. The yield was reduced by 40% Japonica-type cultivars, Odaebyeo and Bogkwangbyeo that were infected by white tip nematode. The yield loss in Japonica-type cultivars was more severe than that in Tongil-type cultiveas. The resistance of Youngdege 5 was highest than any other cultivars showing no disease symptoms and yield loss.
In order to detect casual agents associated with ear blight of rice, seed samples of 'Ilmi-byeo' and 'Daesan-byeo', susceptible cultivars were collected from 28 regions on a nationwide scale. Finally 23 fungi including Bipolaris oryzae($10.3\%$), Alternaria alternata ($10.2\%$), Cladosporium sp. ($7.5\%$), Nigrospora oryzae($5.2\%$) and Phoma sorghina ($6.3\%$) from seeds of 'Ilmi-byeo', and 13 fungi including N. oryzae ($15.1\%$), A. alternata ($9.6\%$) and Curvularia lunata ($2.2\%$) from seeds of 'Daesan-byeo' were detected. In case of discolored seeds caused by rice ear blight, B. oryzae($15.5\%$), A. alternata ($5.5\%$), Fusarium graminearum ($8.0\%$), N. oryzae($5.2\%$) and P. sorghina ($4.5\%$) were detected even from the hulled rice of Ilmi-byeo.
Jinheung rice seeds ranging from 5.6 to 14.7 percent of water content were X-irradiated from 1.5 to 25 kR in vacuum and then immediately hydrated in either oxygen- or nitrogen-bubbled water at around 19$^{\circ}C$ for 12 hours. Results, as reported in terms of reduction of $M_1$ seedling height and survival, sterility and $M_2$ mutation frequency, indicate that the post-irradiation oxygen effect in very dry seeds was conspicuous; the seedling height and the survival were drastically reduced, and the sterility and the mutation frequency were increased in super dry seeds.
