This study was carried out to obtain the effects of soil environment and characteristics on the growth and yield of young rice seedling. Twenty four rice fields were selected among the labor saving mechanization complex, and the growth statu s and various soil characteristics were investigated The young rice seedling planted soils were located at the range of elevation 5m to 210m, and the average water holding days was 5.1 days, and drainage class were mainly moderately well to imperfectly. The plant height on 30th day after machine transplanting were higher and the tiller numbers were smaller at the higher clay contents at moderately well and imperfectly drained soils. In case of sandy loam soils, the better the drainage class, the higher plant and more tillers. Soil hardness was lower in sandy loam, and the bulk densities of loam, silty clay loam and poorly drained soils were lower than the other fields. There were not differences of soil chemical properties between the soil textural groups but organic matter content were higher in poorly drained soils. The rice yields of young seedling planted fields were negatively correlated to soil bulk density and highly significantly correlated to the exchangeable calcium contents of the soils. The average yield of young rice seedlings was 487kg/10a, 2.5% higher than semi-adult rice seedling of 475kg/10a.
The study was conducted to investigate an optimum growing condition for various sizes of seedlings of rice for mechanical transplantation under different sowing rates, different levels of fertilizers, different sowing dates and g rowing days. The plant height, leaf number and dry weight of seedlings increased as the sowing rate decreased and amount of fertilizer applied were increased. Also those seedling characters increased as the rice planted late and the total growing periods increased. The factors affected seedling chracters were ordered as following-sowing times>growing days>sowing rate>fertilizer levels. 200 gr. of seeds per box and 4 gr. of fertilizers were optimum for young seedling growth, when sown early. For medium size of seed ling growth, 50 grams and 100 to 125 grams of rice seemed to be adequate for 25 days old and 35 days old seedling, respectively. However, the 45 days old seedling grew too mach and were not suitable for mechanical transplantation. When planted late, similar results were obtained with more differences among treatments. In other words, the suitable plant density was obtained when 100 gr. of seeds were planted per box. Middle class of seedlings were obtained when 100 to 150 gr. of rice were planted per box and grown for 25 days. The seedlings from the box with 100 to 150 gr. of rice per box were over grown and ratio of suitable seedling was also low if they were grown over 35 days.
To formalize the mechanization technique so as to build up competitiveness on the international market, a detail survey of a 104ha size rice farm, was made. And calculated to find out how many machine of each calibre are needed. It was found that he needed : 3 farm tractors, 3 combines, 4 grain dryers, 1 speed sprayer, 100 man days of labor for sowing, application of fertilizer and herbicide, respectively. And also needed 150 man days for combine harvesting and 60 man days for disease and pest control. It was found also that well timed harvesting is critically needed to keep rice quality. Because, in case when harvesting machine was beakdown to make harvesting time extended, then the quality drops down very much and also the farm income fall very much. Therefore, it is recommended that the amount of machine needed should be prepared and they should be well maintained so that harvest be completed in time.

There are three main rice-growing regions in the United States: the prairie region along the Mississippi River Valley in eastern Arkansas; the Gulf Coast prairie region in southwestern Louisiana and southeastern Texas; and the Central Valley of California. The Central Valley of California is producing about 23% of the US rice(Fig. 1). In California. most of the crop has been produced in the Colusa, Sutter, Butte, Glenn Counties of the Sacramento Valley since 1912, when rice was commercially grown for the first time in the state(Fig. 2). Roughly speaking, the average annual area sown to rice in California is about 300,000 acres to 400,000 acres during the last forty years(Fig. 3). California rice is grown under a Mediterranean climate characterized by warm, dry, clear days, and a long growing season favorable to high photosynthetic rates and high rice yields. The average rice yield per acre is probably higher in California than in any other rice-growing regions of the world(Fig. 4). A dependable supply of irrigation water must be available for a successful rice culture. Most of the irrigation water for California rice comes from the winter rain and snow-fed reservoir of the Sierra Nevada mountain ranges. Less than 10 percent of rice irrigation water is pumped from wells in areas where surface water is not sufficient. It is also essential to have good surface drainage if maximum yields are to be produced. Rice production in California is highly mechanized, requiring only about four hours of labor per acre. Mechanization of rice culture in California includes laser-leveler technology, large tractors, self-propelled combines for harvesting, and aircraft for seeding, pest control, and some fertilization. The principal varieties grown in California are medium-grain japonica types with origins from the cooler rice climates of the northern latitudes (Table 1). Long-grain varieties grown in the American South are not well adapted to California's cooler environment. Nearly all the rice grown recently in California are improved into semidwarf varieties. Choice of variety depends on environment, planting date, quality desired, marketing, and harvesting scheduling. The Rice Experiment Station at Biggs is owned, financed, and administered by the rice industry. The station was established in 1912, as a direct result of the foresight and effort of Charles Edward Chambliss of the United States Department of Agriculture. Now, The station's major effort is the development of improved rice varieties for California.
Due to fast industrialization and reduced agricultural population, there has been increased farm mechanization to reduce the labor requirement. In rice production, mechanical transplanting has been increasingly popular due to the heavy labor requirement in hand transplanting and development of convenient transplanters. For mechanical transplanting, rice seedlings is grown in boxes with limited soils under super dense population, thus short period of exposure to unfavorable temperature and poor water management would cause severe damage to rice seedlings such as seedling damping off and the similar physiological disorders. Several chemicals were evaluated for their effectiveness to control the disease and disorders, and other effects as plant growth stimulants. 3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole-a soil fungicide, Metalozyl-a fungicide which controls mildew, SF 8002-the composite of above two chemicals, and Isoprothiolane-a fungicide which controls rice blast were found to be effective controling seedling damping off and similar physiological disorders, and improvement of physiological characteristics of the seedlings such as the amount of bleeding sap, rooting ability, negative geotrophism, and regrowth after cutting. The results indicated that the chemicals will be very effective raising healthy seedlings even under unfavorable environments by the improvement of physiological activities of seedlings and preventing seedling damping off and the similar physiological disorders.
Currently, mechanization and automation have been introduced into rice harvest and drying process due to the shortage of man power. After rice cultivars, Chucheong and Milyang #23 were cutted with manual method (H1) or harvested with combine (H2), the threshed grain were dried in natural sun-drying (D1), in natural air in-bin system (D2), or in contineous hot-air drier (D3). We have evaluated grain losses, operation hour, and grain quality on each harvest and drying methods. Shattering loss during harvesting with combine was not dirfered significant from that of manual method, but threshing loss was 1.2% higher in combine harvest than in manual. Operation hours required for combine harvest was 3.5 times faster than for manual, even without head threshing. There was a significant difference bel ween cultivars in harvesting loss, which Milyang #23, a Tongil rice had two times more grain loss than Chucheong, a Japonica rice. Drying hours required to reduce to 14% grain moisture content were ten days for H1D1, 5-9 days for H2 D1, 2-3 days for H2D2, and only 15 hours for H2D3, respectively. In grain quality, complete grain ratio after dehulling was decreased about four percent in H2D3 compared to H1D1. while it was lower in Milyang #23 than in Chucheong, Hot-air drier increased occurence of cracked and broken grain. Combine harvest increased significantly these incomplete grain ratio of :Milyang #23, but not Chucheong.

Orissa is one of the major rice growing states of India. The state covers an area of 15.54 mha with 6.00mha cultivable holding is 1.46 ha. The power input is much below the national average of 0.87 hp/ha. Recently, the Government of Orissa has accorded equal status to Agriculture as given to the Industry with determination to increase the power input for agricultural production to2.54 hp/ha so as to obtain an average rice productivity of 3.0t/ha. Appropriate power units so as to be available with in the purchasing power of the small size farm owners in lieu of a pair of bullocks appear to be the right approach and is found to be in line with the highly successful Japanese and Korean model of small farm mechanization . The state needs 0.25m units of small tillers and tractors per year. The present population of tractors and power tillers in the state is about 11000nos. In India, two manufactures in collaboration with Japanese firms started manufacturing of power tiller sin 197 . The present production of power tillers in the country is about 1000 unit per year which is inadequate to meet the demands of all the stats. To meet the demands of the Orissa state, three Chinese model power tillers imported by local agencies are being supplied to the farmers during the past two years. Encouraged by the demand of power tillers in the state, three local manufacturing units located at Bhubanewar have come up with their own model of light weight power tillers(1.5 to 3.0 hp) during the past one year. These machine have been evaluated in the farms of the university and have been found to be promising . There is a target of supplying during 1996-97. The local manufacturers are in need of international collaboration for technical knowhow to manufacture these machine economically to meet the requirement of the farmers.
Bale is an operation of collecting livestock feed materials from field crop residue, and mechanization demand on the operation has been increased. Bailers imported from foreign countries such as Japan and European countries have been used, but those models showed improper performance in Korean situations. In recent years, a steel-roller type round baler attachable to medium size tractors(40 to 60 HP) for effective bale operation in Korea was developed. This study was conducted to evaluate field performance of the baler. For proper baling operation, engine speed was greater than 1,800rpm, average traction force and PTO torque were about 4kN and in a range of 380-671Nm, and maximum values were about 7kN and 3,000Nm, respectively. Performance evaluation tests for sudan grass, rice straw, and blue barley showed that field capacity was 0.59ha/h for blue barley and 0.99ha/h for sudan grass and rice straw. Bale weight, diameter, width, and bulk density were in ranges of 176.1~418.4kg, 1.07~1.12m, 1.02~1.04m, and 175.3~454.1kg/$m^3$. Noise sound level during the baling operation was 4dB greater than idle operation condition, which was considered to be ignorant.

Cowpea(Vigna unguiculata L. Walp) has a low fat and protein content and a relatively high starch content, so it is mainly used in various ways for song-pyeon sediment, rice-cake paste, and porridge. In Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do, cowpea for seed production is being cultivated for the localization of raw material for Rice cake with ramie leave. A cowpea variety 'Jang-Alchan' was improved from the cross between IT145373 and IT145391 at the JARES in 2019. 'Jang-alchan' has an erect plant with an intermediate plant habit, light purple-colored corolla, and heart-shaped leaflets. 'Jang-alchan' has an orange-yellow seed seed-surface of faint luster, and brown and straight pods when matured. The stem length of 'Jang-alchan' was 48cm, 9cm longer than that of the control cultivar 'Okdang' and the 100-seed weight was 14.1g. The weight ratio of the seed coat for the entire seed was 11.2%, which was 0.2%p lower than that of the control cultivar. Field resistance of 'Jang-alchan' to leaf and systemic diseases was similar to that of the control cultivar. Is field resistance of 'Jang-alchan' to lodging was slightly lower than that of the control cultivar. The average yield of 'Jang-alchan' was 1.85ton per hectare, which was 14% higher than that of the control cultivar 'Okdang', 'Jang-Alchan' does not require the installation of an espalier-net and is taller than the existing supplied 'Okdang', so it can be harvested by combine harvesting. In addition, it is expected to contribute to the localization of raw material grains for regional specialties as it can be cultivated over a large area.
To improve the physico-mechanical characteristics of heavy clayey paddy soils(Hwadong series) on Diluvial terrace after application of fine sand and briquette ashes, barley and rice were cultivated for 2 years. The influences of sand and briquette ashes on soil properties and on the crops were summarized as follows: 1. Application of the adding materials could not affect the yield of rice but barley yields were increased significantly about 18-19% in the plots of sand 100t/10a(clay 15% adjusted) and in the plots of briquette ashes. 2. The porosity and the content of water stable aggregates were decreased in the plots of sand and briquette ash adding. The chemical properties were slightly decreased in the plots of sands while the contents of av. $SiO_2$: and extr K were increased in the plots of briquette ashes. 3. Soil mechanical properties such as cone penetration resistance, shearing resistance and plastic index etc. were decreased while the friction resistance increased in the plots of sand and briquette ash treatments. Consequently, the adaptability to mechanization was increased. 4. The content of rice roots in subsoils (10-20cm) were increased in the plots of sand and briquette ash treatments.
