Effect of Elevated CO2 and Temperature on Growth, Yield and Physiological Responses of Major Rice Cultivars by Region in South Korea

  • The physiological characteristics, growth, and yield of each regional rice variety ('Odaebyeo', 'Saechucheong', 'Ilmibyeo') were investigated depending on the impact of changes in temperature and CO2 concentration. Experiments were conducted with a control group, which reflected atmospheric CO2 concentration and temperature, and treatment groups, in which the CO2 concentration and temperature were increased by 250 ppm and 2.0℃ from those in the control group. The results showed that the increase in CO2 concentration and temperature reduced the growth and yield of the rice 'Odaebyeo', but did not substantially change the productivity of the 'Saechucheong' and 'Ilmibyeo'. The increase in CO2 concentration and temperature increased stomatal conductance and rate of transpiration of the 'Odaebyeo' variety, thereby decreasing its water use efficiency (WUE). In contrast, the increase in CO2 concentration and temperature increased the photosynthetic rate and WUE of the 'Saechucheong' and 'Ilmibyeo' varieties. The gradual change in climate is considered to directly affect growth and development of rice and diversely affect the productivity of each variety. Therefore, it is necessary to implement technological development, select regionally optimal rice varieties, develop new rice varieties, as well as conduct long-term monitoring of each rice variety for climate adaptation to counter global warming.

서해안 군내간척지 담수호 및 농경지 염류의 시공간적 분포 특성 분석 (Spatio-Temporal Variations of Paddy and Water Salinity of Gunnae Reclaimed Tidelands in Western Coastal Area of Korea)

  • To understand salinity status of fresh water and paddy soils and the susceptibility of rice to salinity stress of Gunnae reclaimed tidelands, salinity monitoring was conducted in rainy and dry seasons. For fresh water, a high salinity was observed at the sampling location near the sluice gate and decreased with distance from the gate. This spatial pattern of fresh water salinity indicates the necessity of spatial distribution of salinity in the assessment of salinity status of fresh water. Interestingly, there was significant correlation between rainfall amount and salinity, implying that salinity of fresh water varies with rainfall and thus it may be possible to predict salinity of water using rainfall. Soil salinity also higher near the gate, reflecting the influence of high saline water. In addition, the groundwater salinity also high to threat rice growth. Though soil salinity status indicated low possibility of sodium injury, there was changes in soil salinity status during the course of rice growth, suggesting that more intensive monitoring of soil salinity may be necessary for soil salinity assessment. Our study suggests the necessity of intensive salinity monitoring to understand the spatio-temporal variations of salinity of water and soil of reclaimed tideland areas.

LANDSAT 위성영상을 이용한 벼 생육 및 수량 모니터링 (A Study on Rice Growth and Yield Monitoring Using Medium Resolution Landsat Imagery)

  • 광범위한 지역의 재배면적과 생산량을 신속하고 경제적으로 모니터링 할 수 있는 광학(LANDSAT) 중해상도 위성 영상을 활용하여 벼 재배면적, 생육 및 수량을 모니터링 할 수 있는지를 검토하였다. 1. 식생지수와 수량과의 관계를 살펴보면, EVI를 제외한 모든 식생지수와 수량간에는 정의 상관관계를 보였으며, NDVI_SWIR이나 EVI_SWIR과는 유의성이 없었다. NDVI가 RVI보다 수량과의 상관도가 다소 높았으며, 수량과 가장 밀접한 식생지수는 $NDVI_R$(r = 0.68)이었다 2. LANDSAT 단일시기 영상(2004년 7월 29일)을 활용하여 서산간척지 지역내 벼 수량을 모니터링한 결과 $NDVI_R$와 백미수량간에는 1차 직선관계($R^2$ = 0.46)가 성립하였으며, 필 지중에서 면적이 다소 적거나 주변에 반사특성에 영향하는 요인이 있는 지역을 제외하여 살펴본 결과 추정도가 다소 높아졌다($R^2$ = 0.66). 3. 논구역 벡터를 사용하여 논구역 정보를 추출하는 기존의 방법 대신 raster 기반의 논구역 masking을 제작하여 논 구역 정보를 추출하였는데 이 방법을 통해 쉽고 빠르게 논구역 정보를 추출할 수 있었다. 4. 연차별 지역적용가능성을 검토하기 위해 1994년 7월 26일 경기도내 7개 시군의 논구역 masking을 제작하여 NDVIred를 추출하고 $NDVI_R$-수량관계식을 이용하여 수량을 추정한 결과 1:1 line에 근접하여 비교적 잘 일치되었다.

  • Momilactones A and B, the major phytotoxins and phytoalexins in rice plants, were quantified by a HPLC-APCI-MS-MS (APCI-MS-MS) system under multiple reaction monitoring conditions. Since MA and MB were found to be easily extracted with water, these phytotoxic compounds may affect germination and growth of other plant species when the rice straws were left in the fields.

볶음밥의 Bacillus cereus 위해 수준 및 위해 관리를 위한 모니터링 기준 설정 (Prevalence of Bacillus cereus from Fried Rice Dishes and Monitoring Guidelines for Risk Management)

  • Contamination levels of aerobic colony counts, coliforms and pathogenic bacteria were tested in fried rice dishes to monitor quality for risk management. The prevalence of Bacillus cereus in dishes from 8 Chinese-style restaurants and 2 institutional foodservices was 10%, and the bacteria's contamination levels was 3.47 log CFU/g. Echerichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella were not detected in any of the 10 samples. However, for their aerobic colony counts and numbers of isolated coliforms, the samples were 30% and 70% over the microbial criteria, respectively, for ready-to-eat foods presented in the Korean Food Code. This suggests that fried rice dishes, although cooked with oil at high temperature, require special care. For the prediction of the growth curve of B. cereus spp. in the fried rice samples, an experiment design of 3 storage temperatures ($7^{\circ}C$, $35^{\circ}C$, $57^{\circ}C$) x 5 storage times (0 h, 2 h, 4 h, 6 h, 24 h) was applied. The sample exposed to $35^{\circ}C$ showed no B. cereus spp. at 0 h; however, there was a tendency of slow growth (1.0 log CFU/g) after 4 hours of storage and then faster growth at 6 h (3.7 log CFU/g) and 12 h (4.7 log CFU/g), showing a growth rate of 0.56 log CFU/g/hr. These results indicate that fried rice, despite being heat-treated, can become heavily contaminated with B. cereus spp. when held over 2 hours at room temperature. However, the samples stored at $7^{\circ}C$ and $57^{\circ}C$ over 24 hours were not contaminated with B. cereus. Based on these results, management guidelines for controlling B. cereus are suggested.

L-band SAR Monitoring of Rice Crop Growth

  • Rice crop has relatively short growing season during the summer in Korea and, therefore, it is often difficult to acquire cloud-free imagery on time. This study was attempt to define the temporal characteristics of radar backscattering observed from satellite L-band SAR data on different growing stages of rice crop. Six scenes of multi-temporal JERS SAR data were obtained from the transplanting season to the harvesting month of October. Six layers of multi-temporal SAR data were registered on a common geographic coordinate system. Using topographic maps, field collected data, and Landsat TM data, several sample rice fields were delineated from the imagery and their relative radar backscatters were calculated by using a set of reference targets. The temporal pattern of radar backscattering was very distinctive by the growing stage of rice crop. It was also separable between two types of rice fields having different cultivation practices. Considering the temporal characteristics of radar backscattering observed from the study, it is obvious that a certain date of the growing season can be more effective to delineate the exact area of the cultivated rice crop field.

하수처리수의 재이용을 위한 벼 재배시험 (Rice Cultivation with Reclaimed Wastewater Irrigation for Wastewater Reuse)

  • The objective of the research is to develop agricultural resue technologies of reclaiming the effluents from a municipal wastewater treatment plant and reusing for irrigated rice paddies. The Suwon wastewater treatment plant was selected for wastewater reuse tests. The control was the plots with groundwater irrigation (TR#1), the treatment (TR#2) using polluted stream water as it was, and three others using wastewater after treatment. Three levels of wastewater treatments were employed: the effluent from the wastewater treatment plant (TR#3), sand filtering after treatment plant(TR#4), and ultra-violet treatment after sand filtering (TR#5). The randomized block method was applied to wastewater application to paddy rice with five treatments and six replica. The effects of various wastewater treatment levels on water quality, paddy soil, crop growth, yields, and the health hazards were investigated. The primary results indicate that cultivating rice with reclaimed wastewater irrigation did not cause a problem to adverse effects on crop growth and yields. Overall, wastewater could be used as a practical alternative measure for reclaimed wastewater irrigation. However, long-term monitoring is recommended on the effects on soil chemical characteristics and its related health concerns.

X-밴드 레이더 산란계 자동 측정시스템 구축과 벼 생육 모니터링 (Construction of X-band automatic radar scatterometer measurement system and monitoring of rice growth)

  • 본 연구에서는 기상조건에 영향을 받지 않고 레이더산란 측정을 할 수 있는 X-band 안테나 기반 자동관측 시스템을 구축하였다. 이 시스템을 이용하여 벼 생육시기에 따른 편파별 후방산란계수 변화와 벼 생육인자 변화를 관측하고, 후방산란계수와 벼 생육인자와의 관계를 분석을 통해 최적조건의 후방산란계수를 이용한 벼 생육을 추정하였다. 벼 생육시기에 후방산란계수 변화를 관측해 본 결과 생육초기에는 VV-편파가 HH, HV/VH-편파 보다 후방산란계수가 높게 나타났고, 모든 편파별 후방산란계수가 벼 유수형성기 (7월 말경)까지 증가하다가 그 후 감소 한 후 9월 초순이후 다시 증가하는 dual-peak 현상을 뚜렷이 나타났다. 동시에 생육시기에 따른 생체중, 이삭 건물중, 엽면적지수, 초장 등 벼 생육인자들의 생육 변화를 관측해 보았는데 생체중, 엽면적지수, 초장은 6월 중순부터 7월 하순까지 편파별 후방산란계수와의 변화 경향이 비슷하게 나타났고, 이삭 건물중의 경우 특히 VV-편파 후방산란계수가 9월 초순에서 10월 초순까지 변화 경향이 동일하게 나타났다. 편파별 후방산란계수와 벼 생육인자와의 상관관계를 분석한 결과 엽면적지수, 생체중은 6월 중순 (DOY 168)부터 7월 하순 (DOY 209) 시기에 HH-편파 후방산란 계수와 상관관계가 높았고, 초장은 같은 시기에 VV-편파 후방산란계수와 관계가 높게 나타났다. 이삭 건물중의 경우 벼 출수기가 끝나고 결실기로 접어드는 9월 초순 (DOY 244) 부터 10월 초순 (DOY 276) 시기에 VV-편파 후방산란계수와 상관관계가 높게 나타났다. 이 결과를 바탕으로 벼 생육인자와 상관이 높게 나타난 편파별 후방산란계수를 이용하여 벼 생육을 추정하였다. 엽면적지수는 HH-편파 후방산란계수를 이용하여 2007년도 실측값과 2008년도 추정 경험 모형을 비교해본 결과 비교적 오차가 작았고 (RMSE=0.43), 상관관계가 높은 HH-편파 후방산란계수를 이용하여 2007년도 생체중 실측값과 생체중 추정 모형 (2008년도)을 비교해 본 결과 RMSE가 41.0 g $m^{-2}$ 으로 비교적 작은 오차를 보여 생체중 추정 모형의 유효성이 높다는 것이 증명되었다. 또한 초장의 경우 실측값 (2007년)과 초장 추정 모형 (2008년)을 비교 분석한 결과 오차 범위가 비교적 작게 나타났고 (RMSE=6.93 cm), VV-편파 후방산란계수를 이용해 얻은 이삭 건물중 추정 경험 모형 (2008년도)과 2007년도 이삭 건물중 실측값과의 관계를 통해 추정식을 검증한 결과 RMSE=0.35 g/m2 을 보여 이삭 건물중 추정모형의 유효성이 높다는 것이 증명되었다. 본 연구결과에서는 Kim et al. (2009)이 일정한 간격을 두고 수동조건으로 관측한 결과와 비교해서 벼 생육시기에 따른 편파별 후방산란계수 변화 경향이 뚜렷하게 나타났고, 이 후방산란계수를 이용하여 벼 생육인자와의 관계 및 추정 결과에서도 기존 결과보다 상관관계 및 생육추정 모형 유효성이 높게 나타났다. 본 연구 결과를 통해 X-band 산란계 자동측정 시스템을 이용하여 벼 생육을 예측 할 수 있음을 확인하였다.

Evaluation of Practical Application of the Remote Monitoring System for Water Salinity in Estuary Lake During Farming Season

  • The remote monitoring system of water salinity was assessed in Wando reclaimed land lake during a farming season in 2009. Increasing of water salinity in this lake used to bring about salt damage on rice plant occasionally. At the early stage of the rice growing period, rice growth was not damaged due to enough rainfall with more than 120 mm from the mid-May to the first ten days of June. Data collection using on-site water salinity measuring sensors every 2 hours and real-time transmission in system were carried out for the experiment. We compared the transmitted values from the sensor system with water sample values collected and analyzed by a local technical office. Salt concentrations measured by sensor in real-time monitoring system were available data. The regression equation between rainfall and water salinity was presented as (water salinity after rainfall) = $0.621{\times}$(water salinity before rainfall)${\times}exp(-0.0139{\times}rainfall)$, ($r^2=0.579$, p<0.01). It is suggested that the system is useful for stable farming in the area where farmer use water in reclaimed lakes as an irrigation source.
