  • The objectives of this research were to investigate the system of rice intensification (SRI) on early growth, grain yield, and yield components under Chinese milk vetch residue-mulched no-tillage cropping systems at silt loam soil. The field was prepared as a split-plot design with three replications, main plots consisted of Dongjinbyeo, and Sobibyeo as a cultivar, and subplots consisted of $10{\times}10$ cm, $20{\times}20$ cm, and $30{\times}30$ cm as a planting density. Weed infestation during rice growing season was more severe in wider planting density $30{\times}30$ at 35 days after transplanting (DAT), and $20{\times}20$ cm at 95 DAT in both Sobibyeo and Dongjinbyeo. The maximum plant height was recorded in Sobibyeo compared with Dongjinbyeo, $10{\times}10$ cm and $20{\times}20$ cm planting density compared with $30{\times}30$ cm from 20 DAT until 60 DAT. Among the three planting densities, SPAD values were significantly greater in planting density of $20{\times}20$ cm both in Sobibyeo and Dongjinbyeo followed by $30{\times}30$ cm compared with closer planting density of $10{\times}10$ cm. The lowest grain yield was observed in wider planting density of $30{\times}30$ in both Sobibyeo and Dongjinbyeo due to lower number of panicle per unit area. Our findings suggest that optimum planting density for SRI in no-tillage paddy was $20{\times}20$ cm and it should be useful the systems to small-scale rice farmers in Korea as a sustainable farming system.

  • Pilot study was conducted to examine the effects of ponded-water depth and reclaimed wastewater irrigation on paddy rice culture. For the ponded-water depth effect, three treatments of shallow, traditional, and deep water depths were applied, and each treatment was triplicated. The irrigation water for the treatment pots was an effluent from constructed wetland system for sewage treatment, while the control pot was irrigated with tap water kept traditional ponded-water depth. Irrigation water quantity varied with ponded-water depth as expected and drainage water quantity also varied similarly, which implies that shallow irrigation might save irrigation water and also reduce environmental impacts on downstream water quality. Rice growth and production were not significantly affected by ponded-water depth within the experimental condition, instead there was an indication of increased production in shallow and deep ponded-water depths compared to the traditional practice. Raising drainage outlet to the adequate height in paddy dike might be beneficial to save water resources within the paddy field. There was no adverse effect observed in reclaimed wastewater irrigation on the rice production, and mean yield was even greater than the control pots with tap water irrigation although statistically not significant. Water-saving irrigation by shallow ponded-water depth, raising the outlet height in diked rice paddy fields, minimizing forced surface drainage by well-planned irrigation, and reclaimed wastewater irrigation are suggested to save water and protect water quality. However, deviation from traditional farming practices might affect rice growth in long term, and therefore, further investigations are recommended before full scale application.

  • BACKGROUND: Production function gives the equation that shows the relationship between the quantities of productive factors used and the amount of product obtained, and can answer a variety of questions. This study was carried out to evaluate the relationship between irrigation water used for rice production and rice productivity by the production function which shows the mathematical relation between input and output. METHODS AND RESULTS: The statistical data on rice production and on the amount of irrigation water were used for the production function analysis. The analysis period was separated for 1966-1981 and 1982-2011, based on goal's change on agriculture from 'increasing food' to 'complex farming'. The relation between irrigation and yield considering production function is a short-term production function both before and after 1982. These results can be expressed by the sigmoid relation. When comparing the graphs of the two analyzed periods, there are differences in quantity between the maximum point and the minimum point during the same analysis period, which can be called an 'Irrigation Effect' by the difference of irrigation, and 'Technical Effect' by the difference by inputs like as fertilizers etc. CONCLUSION: The results could be useful as information for assessing the relationship between agricultural water and the productivity of rice and predicting rice productivity by irrigation water in Korea.

  • At the time of discontinuing the publishing of RDA Journal of Farm management and agricultural engineering the present paper is to review the research results produced since 1962 to 1998. During the three decades, from 1960s to 1980s, the main research efforts were focused o mechanization of rice farming which contributed in food grain productions. In the 1990s, the research direction was shifted to horticultural productions and producing high quality agricultural products. We had put stress on practical use of farm mechanization, mainly on transplanting and seeding operation for rice and upland and horticultural crops productions and harvest and threshing machinery developments, in which we thought our research direction had not been quite right. However, in the future we are going to promote mechanization on livestock and upland crops productions. Furthermore, we have a plan to employ cutting edge technologies in agricultural machinery developments in order to automate and unman all farm operations satisfying the needs of advanced agricultural mechanization technology in the twenty first century.

  • We proposed a new system to collect hyperspectral data using a general cargo crane. The system has advantageous characteristics for precise data collection and analysis. In order to evaluate the validity, we performed the system on actual rice paddy field and analyzed the observed data. On the process, we could successfully extract the pure vegetation spectrum with high stability. The data taken by the system are useful for detail analysis among fields. In future development, it can be used for obtaining the grand truth for calibrating satellite or aerial hyperspectral images.

  • Unsan alluvial plain is the backmarsh of Seomseokcheon which is a river originated from Chilseongdae(954m) on Mts Taeback, flowing into Donghae in southern Kangreung City, Kangwon Province. The vegetation change, geomorphic develoopment and depositional environment during the late Holocene have been investigated, using the methods such as boring, pollen analysis and radiocarbon dating. Because the deposits fo the study area are mainly consisted of peat and paety sand, they contained many pollen fossils. The peat layer has been sedimented since the high sea-level periods, 3,200 y. BP, and the records of vegetation change until now has well preserved here. According to archeological researches and the results of pollen analysis in east coast of Korea, it is supposed that the prehistoric rice farming in this area has begun since ca. 1,800 y. BP.

  • Three new rice farming systems, i.e. (1) straw-mulched no-till rice cropping system(SMNTRCS), (2)straw-mulched no-till rice-vetch cropping system (SMNTRWCS), (3)conventional rice-barley cropping system(CRVCS) have been established and compared with (4)conventional rice cropping system(CRCS). Grain appearance of brown rice of Korean native rice cultivars in SMNTRCS and SMNTRVCS were better than those in CRBCS and CRCS. Grain appearance of milled rice in SMNTRCS was better than those of other cropping systems. Korean native rice cultivars showed more white belly and broken rice than those of recommended rice cultivars. Mg and K contents of Korean native rice cultivars were the highest in SMNTRVCS. Protein contents of all the cultivars tested were the highest in SMNTRCS. Protein contents of Korean native cultivars were higher than those of recommended cultivars. Amylose contents of the cultivars tested were from 16 to 22 percent, while those of Aedal and Jenmjo were significantly higher than those of the other cultivars. Alkali digestibility values(ADV) of milled rice grain, tested in $1.2\%$ potassium hydroxide for 23 h at $30^{\circ}C$, showed varietal differences and the cultivars grown in CRBCS were the highest and the lowest in CRCS.

  • This study is aimed at giving the basic information for individual farm households to make decisions for optimizing their farm sizes and for the government to implement farm size optimization policies through the identification of combinations among rice production factors in plain areas like Cheolwon district and the suggestion of the optimal farm sizes of individual farmers based on the scale of economy calculated. The data of agricultural production costs of 50 rice farmers in the plain area which is located in Dongsong-eup Cholwon district, Kangwon province were used in the analysis. The 'translog' cost function among various methods which is a flexible function type was adopted to calculate the scale of economy in rice production. Seemingly unrelated regression(SUR) method was used in forecasting functions and processing other statistics by SHAZAM which is one of the computer aid program for quantitative econometric analysis. In conclusion, the long-run average cost(LAC) curve showed 'U-shape' which was different from 'L-type' one which was shown in the previous studies by others. The lowest point of the LAC was 9.764ha and the concerned production cost amounted to 633 Won/kg. Based on these results, it have to be suggested that around 10 ha of paddy is the target size for policy assistances to save costs under the present level of farming practices and technology. The above results show that the rice production costs could be saved up to 10ha in Cheolwon plain area which is a typical paddy field. However, land use, land condition, land ownership and manager's ability which may affect scale of economy should be considered. Furthermore, reasonable management will have to be realized by means of labor saving technology and cost saving management skill like enlargement of farm size of rice.
