Regeneration and leaf traits variation of Rhododendron campanulatum along elevation gradient in western Nepal Himalaya

  • Background: Plant species of the alpine treeline ecotone are highly sensitive to climate change and may adjust their population dynamics, and functional traits in response to changing climate. This study examined regeneration patterns and leaf traits variations in an important treeline ecotone element Rhododendron campanulatum along the elevation gradient in western Nepal to assess its potential adaptive responses to climate change. The distribution range of R. campanulatum (3,400-3,800 m above sea level [a.s.l.]) was divided into five horizontal bands, each with a 100 m elevational range. Eight plots (10 m × 10 m) were sampled in each band, resulting into a total of 40 plots. In each plot, all R. campanulatum individuals and co-occurring tree species were counted. From each elevation, R. campanulatum leaf samples were collected to determine leaf dimensions, leaf density, specific leaf area (SLA), and stomatal density (SD). Results: The density-diameter curve indicated that R. campanulatum was regenerating well, with enhanced regeneration at higher elevation (3,800 m a.s.l.) than at lower. Tree canopy cover appeared to be the major determinant of R. campanulatum regeneration, as indicated by a higher number of seedlings in treeless stands. With increasing elevation, the leaf length, width, SLA, and stomata length decreased but leaf thickness and SD increased. Conclusions: Overall, a higher regeneration and lower SLA with the high SD in the leaves at the upper limit of the species distribution suggested that R. campanulatum is well adapted at its upper distribution range with the possibility of upslope range shift as temperature increases.

낙남정맥 마루금 일대의 식생구조 특성 (Characteristics of Vegetation Structure on the Ridge of the Naknam-Jeongmaek)

  • 낙남정맥 마루금 일대의 식생상황을 파악하기 위해 환경조건과 인위적 영향을 고려하여 중점조사지 6개 지역(길마재, 무량산, 여항산, 무학산, 천주산, 신어산)을 선정하여 방형구 132개소(면적 $100m^2$)를 설치하여 출현수종 및 주요 환경인자를 조사해 식생구조 특성을 분석하였다. TWINSPAN기법으로 분리된 군락은 신갈나무-굴참나무군락, 소나무-떡갈나무군락, 신갈나무-소나무군락, 편백림, 소나무-곰솔군락, 잣나무림, 철쭉재배품종-참싸리림이었다. 소나무-떡갈나무군락, 신갈나무-소나무군락, 소나무-곰솔군락은 하층에 낙엽성 참나무류의 세력이 강해 낙엽성 참나무류로의 식생천이가 예상된다. 편백림과 잣나무림, 철쭉재배품종-참싸리림은 인위적으로 조성된 인공림으로 조림수종의 우점도가 높아 당분간 현상태로 유지될 것이다. 낙남정맥의 식생은 대부분 2차림이거나 임목생산과 사방녹화를 위해 조성된 인공림이었다. 특히, 산정상부와 고지대는 대부분 신갈나무, 떡갈나무 등의 낙엽성 참나무류가 우점하거나 일부 소나무군락은 낙엽성 참나무류와의 세력경쟁을 벌이고 있었다. 반면, 저지대나 도시와 인접해 있는 지역은 곰솔, 편백, 잣나무, 철쭉재배품종 등이 식재되어 인위적인 간섭이 심한 편이었다.

Study on the Plants Planted in Rooftop and Their Damage by Insect Pests

  • Plants planted in the green-roofed areas in Busan and Jinju were surveyed. The woody plants investigated in this study were classified into 52 families and 156 species, and the herbaceous plants were classified into 30 families and 97 species. Woody plants mainly planted were Rhododendron yedoense var. poukhanense, R. indicum, C. kousa, P. mume, and E. alatus. However, Pinus spp. were planted in all areas. The main herbaceous species planted were Sedum kamtschaticum, S. takesimense, S. middendorffianum, T. quinquecostatus var. japonica, and A. spathulifolius Maxim. According to surveying the distribution of woody plant pests, they could be classified into six orders, 24 families, and 46 species that usually appeared from April to October but especially between June and September. We investigated 39 insect species in relation to pest damage to leaves, 21 insect species in relation to that of branches, and 39 insect species in relation to that of stems of woody plants.

비슬산(琵瑟山) 산림식생(山林植生)의 군락구조(群落構造) (Community Structure of forest vegetation in Mt. Bislsan)

  • Vegetation composition and structure of forest community at Mt. Bislsan, Dalseung-Gun, Daegu in Korea, were studied using a qualitative with a quantitative approach and its vegetation types and various ecological characteristics such as the importance values, species diversity of the major component species analyzed. The forest vegetation were classified into 2 community group, 14 community, 6 group, and total of 18 vegetation units. Pinus densiflora distributed mainly from lower at the sea level, while Quercus mongolica tended to distributed upper altitude in Physiognomical vegetation. the species diversity values showed mostly 0.8 and Quercus dentata, Quercus serrato and Cornus controversa Community and so on highly showed to 1.0 and 1.1. According to the results of importance value analysis, the I.V. of pinus densiflora and Quercus mongolica highly showed in the tree and subtree layer, and Rhododendron mucronulatum and Lindera obtusiloba and so on highly showed in the shrub.

설악산 대청봉지역의 아고산대 산림식생 (Subalpine Forest Vegetation of Daecheongbong Area, Mt. Seoraksan)

  • 본 연구는 설악산 대청봉지역의 아고산식물대에 분포하고 있는 식물군락을 분류하고, 식생과 토양환경과의 관계를 밝혀 이들을 보존하는데 필요한 기초 자료를 제공하고자 실시하였다. 대청봉지역의 아고산대 식물군락은 털진달래-사스래나무군락군으로 구분되었으며, 입지 환경에 따라 종조성을 달리하는 눈잣나무군락, 분비나무군락, 눈측백군락, 털진달래-사스래나무전형군락으로 구분되었다. 군락별 환경요인과 식생과의 ordination 분석 결과, 눈잣나무군락과 눈측백군락은 분비나무군락과 털진달래-사스래나무전형군락보다 전질소, 유효인산, 유기물함량 등의 양료가 다소 많은 입지에 분포하고 있었다. 분비나무군락과 털진달래-사스래나무전형군락이 눈잣나무군락과 눈측백군락보다 해발고가 다소 높은 입지에 분포하고 있었고, 눈잣나무군락과 눈측백군락은 북사면이나 북서사면에, 분비나무군락과 털진달래-사스래나무전형군락은 남서사면에 분포하는 것으로 나타났다.

우리나라 비슬산군립공원 진달래나무(Rhododendron mucronulatum)와 관련된 토양 진균 군집의 pyrosequencing 분석 (Analysis of Soil Fungal Community Related to Rhododendron mucronulatum in Biseul Mountain County Park, South Korea)

  • 진달래(Rhododendron mucronulatum)는 우리나라에서 어렵지 않게 볼 수 있는 개화식물로 꽃이 아름다워 관상목으로 이용되고 있고 생태학적, 약리적으로 잠재력이 있는 중요한 산림자원이다. 우리나라의 대표적 진달래나무군락지인 비슬산군립공원에서 진달래나무 아래의 토양을 채집하여 그 진균 군집의 특성을 조사하였다. 위치와 계절에 따른 진균 군집의 차이를 확인하기 위하여 토양 샘플은 총 3개의 위치에서 2월과 8월에 각각 한번씩 채집하였다. Pyrosequencing을 통해 총 454,157개의 서열을 얻을 수 있었다. 첫번째 채집포인트에서 얻은 샘플의 진균 군집이 6개 샘플 중 가장 종 풍부도가 높았고 가장 다양한 진균들로 구성되어 있음을 확인하였다. 분류 단위 별 분석으로는, Basidiomycota, Ascomycota, Mortierellomycota가 대표적인 문(phylum)으로 나타났으며, Agaricales_f, Mortierellaceae, Clavariaceae가 주요한 과(family)인 것으로 분석되었다. Mortierella 속(genus)은 모든 샘플중에서 가장 우점한 속이었다. 또한 총 진달래와 관련이 있는 것으로 추정되는 19개의 속이 확인되었다. 8월에 채집한 샘플에서 위치에 따라 각각 109개, 111개, 112개의 특이적인 속이 발견되었고, 2월의 샘플과 비교했을 때 2월의 샘플에는 존재하지 않는 28개의 공통된 속이 발견되었다. 이 연구는 추후 진달래나무에 특이적인 진균의 새로운 종을 규명하거나 토양 진균류와 식물의 상호작용을 규명하는 기초자료로 활용될 수 있다.

  • Adequate regrowth control of weeds and shrubs has been one of the important problem for pasture establishment by overseeding on reclaimed forest hilly land. This experiment was carried out on sloping shrub land near Anseong, Gyeonggido to evaluate the effects of herbicide application on growth control of native weeds, shrubs and trees. We evaluated 63 different weeds and wood species in the trials, which are grown common in korean forest. Buthidazol and 4 other herbicides (sodium chlorate, glyphosate, U-46 and gramoxone) were sprayed each at two application rates during the period of the most intensive growth, on 20 July 45 days before overseeding of pasture species. Glyphosate and sodium chlorate gave excellant control of growth of all species. However. Uncus effusus, Carex heterostachya, Polygonatum humile, Rubus corchorifolius, Lonicera coeralea and Rhododendron mucronulatum were classified as a tolerant weed and wood species to herbicides. Herbicide buthidazol showed also successive control of regrowth of weeds and wood species. But buthidazol was evaluated as a none available herbicide for use in pasture establishment. because o! their long persist of toxic herbicide residue in soils after treatments. Herbicide U-46 and gramoxone had almost no effect on regrowth of shrubs and tree species

Vegetation Structure of Mountain Ridge in Midongsan, Chungcheongbuk-do

  • The Purpose of this study was to offer the raw data for drawing up the conservation plan by analysing natural vegetation in Midongsan, Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea. The period of survey was from July to October, 2004 and the size of plot was 100$m^2$. In the results of analyzing the physical environments, the range of altitude was 303${\sim}$550m and soil pH was 5.4${\sim}$6.8. The angle of slope was 3${\sim}$57% and topographical factor was composed of ridgeline. In the results of analyzing a importance percentage, the dominant species in tree layer, Pinus rigida, P. densiflora, Quercus mongolica, Q. variabilis and Q. acutissima, P. rigida, Q. mongolica, Q. acutissima, Platycarya strobilacea and Q. variabilis in subtree layer, Rhododendron mucronulatum, Symplocos chinensis for pilosa, Lindera obtusiloba, L. erythrocarpa, Rhus trichocarpa and Weigela subsessilis in shrub layer. In the results of species diversity index, species diversity (H') was from 1.2401 to 2.5540, maximum species diversity (H'max), from 1.9459 to 2.8904, evenness (J'), from 0.5644 to 0.8836, dominance (D), from 0.1164 to 0.4356.

계방산과 오대산 일대 분비나무 자생지 군집 구조 및 하층식생 특성 (Community Structure of Abies nephrolepis Habitats and Characteristics of Understory Vegetation in Mt. Gyebang and Mt. Odae)

  • This study was conducted to investigated woody species community classification and understory vegetation characteristics of Abies nephrolepis forest in Mt. Gyebang and Mt. Odae designated as Protected Area for Forest Genetic Resource Conservation and National Park. Vascular plants were surveyed as following; 55 family, 148 species, 3 sub species, 14 variety, 2 form 167 taxa. As an analysis of the species estimator of Jackknife 1, 29 survey plots could be representative of vegetation in study site. Results of the woody species, 3 communities were divided by cluster analysis(A=Abies nephrolepis-Tilia amurensis, B=Betula ermanii-Abies nephrolepis, C=Quercus mongolica-Abies nephrolepis). Using MRPP-test, there were significant differences between the communities indicating analysis of the appropriate group classification(p<0.01). The basal area and altitude were analyzed by negative relationship for NMS ordination. By analyzing plexus diagram of woody species, Acer pseudosieboldianum is strong associated with Quercus mongolica and Rhododendron schlippenbachii. Magnolia sieboldii is strong associated with Acer pictum subsp. mono etc.
