  • The factors involved in the initial neoplastic transformation and subsquent growth of uterine fibroid are poorly understood. The reduction in uterine fibroid volume associated with the chronic administration of the mechanisms mediating the decrease in fibroid volume in GnRH-a treated patients are poorly defined. The purpose of this study was to determine the proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA) in fibroid from-women pretreated with GnRH analogue(GnRH-a) compared with controls. Tissue was obtained from 16 premenopausal women with uterine fibroid who received GnRH-a(D-Trp6-GnRH) intramusculary every 28 days for four injections. The mean proliferating index(PI) in patients with uterine fibroids was $2.25{\pm}0.9$, and in controls was $8.82{\pm}1.8$(P<0.001). The proliferating index was not corrleated with the reduction of fibroid volume. In this clinical study, although hypoestrogenism may be the main factor that reduce the volume of fibroid, other factors are also considered to be involved in that process. And the regrowth of uterine fibroid may be affected by increased production of PCNA after stopping GnRH-a.

  • Objective: This work was carried out to evaluate the effects of zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZH) and ractopamine hydrochloride (RH) combined with immunocastration on the welfare traits of feedlot Nellore cattle. Methods: Ninety-six Nellore males (average body weight [BW] = 409±50 kg; average 20 mo of age) were divided into two groups according to BW; half of the animals in each group received two doses of an immunocastration (ImC) vaccine in a 30 day interval, and the other half did not receive the vaccine (NoC). Afterward, the animals were housed and fed a common diet for 70 days. Then, they were split into three groups and fed one of the following diets for 30 additional days: control (CO) diet, with no β-AA; ZH diet, containing 80 mg/d ZH; and RH diet, containing 300 mg/d RH. Welfare traits were assessed by monitoring body surface temperature using infrared thermography (IRT) and plasma cortisol and temperament measurements. Results: There was no interaction between sexual condition and diet for any trait. The ImC and NoC groups did not differ in rectal and ocular temperatures. The ImC animals had higher flight speeds (p = 0.022) and tended to have higher cortisol levels (p = 0.059) than the NoC animals. Animals fed ZH and RH did not differ in cortisol levels, respiratory rate, rectal temperature, temperature measured by IRT, or temperament behaviour. Conclusion: The ImC animals showed a less stable temperament during handling practices than NoC, whereas ZH and RH supplementation had no adverse effects on animal welfare.

  • In adaptive finite element analysis, r- and h-methods are generally used on the basis of a discretization error estimator. In this paper, an rh-method is proposed as a new adaptive method which can improve the adaptivity performance by using both of them. This suggested rh-method moves nodal coordinates of initially given model to adjust element discretization errors and thereafter performes the h-method tdo obtain the specified accuracy of finite element solutions. Numerical experiments for various plane problems were performed using 4-noded isoparametric quadrilateral elements. As a result, the rh-method has been shown to be an accurate and efficient adaptive analysis method to obtain as improved solution.

  • Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of treatments based on gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH), GnRH-prostaglandin $F2{\alpha}$ ($PGF2{\alpha}$), and/or intense exposure to novel rams to induce fertile estrus without the use of steroid hormones in seasonally anestrous Suffolk ewes. Methods: In the first experiment, ewes were treated with one injection of GnRH, two injections of GnRH administered 7 days apart, or a sequence of GnRH-$PGF2{\alpha}$-GnRH (GPG). In the second experiment anestrous ewes were exposed, for 36 days starting on the day of weaning, to groups of four rams of three different breeds that were alternated every day. Besides exposure to the male effect (ME), the ewes were injected with saline solution (ME group, n = 20), with GnRH (ME-GnRH group, n = 20) or with a sequence of GnRH-$PGF2{\alpha}$-GnRH (ME-GPG group, n = 20). The rams used for male-effect were fitted with aprons to prevent mating, and ewes detected in estrus were bred to selected fertile rams. Ovarian activity was monitored by progesterone determinations in both experiments. Results: In the first experiment sustained induction of ovarian activity was not achieved and no ewe was detected in estrus. In the second experiment induction of sustained ovarian activity was achieved in all groups. Most of the ewes were detected in estrus, 76.7% of the ewes were mated during a 36-d breeding period and 71.7% of all the ewes became pregnant during that period. No significant differences between groups were found for any of these variables. However, estrus detection efficiency was higher in the ME-GnRH group than in the ME group (p<0.05). Conclusion: An intense male-effect, that included the continuous presence and frequent alternation of several rams of different breeds, was sufficient to induce ovarian activity and fertile estrus in Suffolk ewes during the period of deep anestrus without the use of hormones, although addition of GnRH improved the efficiency of estrus detection.

  • Background Bleeding can be a problem in wound debridement. In search for an effective hemostatic agent, we experimented with a chitosan film combined with the recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rh-EGF), hypothesizing that it would achieve effective hemostasis and simultaneously enhance arterial healing. Methods Forty-eight Sprague-Dawley rats were used, and 96 puncture wounds were made. The wounds were divided into the following four groups: treated with sterile gauze, treated with gelatin sponge, treated with chitosan, and treated with chitosan combined with rh-EGF. Immediate hemostasis was evaluated, and arterial healing was observed histologically. Results Groups B, C, and D showed a significant rate of immediate hemostasis as compared to group A (P<0.05), but there were no significant differences among groups B, C, and D. Histologically, only group D showed good continuity of the vessel wall after 1 week. It was the only group to show smooth muscle cell nuclei of the vessel wall. Conclusions We observed that chitosan has an effective hemostatic potential and the mix of rh-EGF and chitosan does not interfere with chitosan's hemostatic capabilities. We also identified enhanced healing of vessel walls when rh-EGF was added to chitosan. Further research based on these positive findings is needed to evaluate the potential use of this combination on difficult wounds like chronic diabetic ulcerations.

  • Decay of fruit is one of the greatest issues in fruit storage. Purpose: In this study, citrus sterilization was performed to evaluate a dry sterilization method using an atmospheric-pressure nonthermal plasma treatment based on a dielectric-barrier discharge technique. Methods: Citrus samples were stored under four different environmental conditions as follows: group A had cold storage with plasma treatment with a temperature of $6.2{\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity (RH) of $93.4{\pm}8.2%$, group B had ambient-temperature storage with $22.9{\pm}2.3^{\circ}C$ and $82.1{\pm}4.5%$ RH, group C ambient-temperature storage with plasma treatment with $25.3{\pm}2.2^{\circ}C$ and $90.0{\pm}2.8%$ RH, and group D had cold storage with $5.7{\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$ and $93.4{\pm}6.5%$ RH. Results: As a result of citrus surface sterilization by plasma treatment, treatment groups A and C together showed an average of 16.1 CFU/mL of mold colonies, while control groups B and D showed an average of $2.2{\times}10^2CFU/mL$ or approximately 13 times greater than the treatment groups. Regarding the mean concentration of aerobic bacteria colonies, the treatment groups (A and C) and control groups (B and D) showed an average of 7.1 CFU/mL and $1.9{\times}10^3CFU/mL$, respectively. This is approximately a 270-fold difference in the concentration of pathogen colonies between treatment and control groups. Conclusions: The results showed the potential of nonthermal plasma treatment for citrus storage in enhancing storage duration and quality preservation.

  • This experimental design and response surface methodology (RSM) have been applied to the investigation of the electrocoagulation/flotation of dye wastewater. The electrocoagulation/flotation reactions were mathematically described as a function of parameters current (A), NaCl concentration (B), initial RhB concentration (C) and time (D) being modeled by use of the central composite design (CCD). The application of RSM using the CCD yielded the following regression equation, which is an empirical relationship between the RhB removal (%) and test variables in RhB removal (%) = $-300.42+129.21{\cdot}Current+46.99{\cdot}NaCl-0.11{\cdot}RhB-+43.71{\cdot}Time-5.67{\cdot}Current{\cdot}NaCl-3.18{\cdot}Current{\cdot}Time-2.41{\cdot}NaCl{\cdot}Time-19.79{\cdot}Current^2-2.27{\cdot}NaCl^2-1.59{\cdot}Time^2$. the model predictions agreed well with the experimentally observed result ($R^{2}=0.9728$). The estimated ridge of maximum response and optimal conditions for RhB removal (%) using canonical analysis was 99.4% (A: 1,77 A, NaCl concentration: 2.23 g/L, RhB concentration: 56.12 mg/L, Time: 9.98 min). To confirm this optimum condition, three additional experiments were performed and RhB removal (%) were within range of 86.87% (95% PI low)~111.93% (95% PI high) obtained.

  • Hydrocarbon solution of $(PPh_3)_2(CO)MOSO_2CF_3(M=Rh$, Ir)reacts rapidly with Pyrazine or 4,4'-bipyridyl to yield dinuclear metal complexes $[(PPh_3)_3(CO)M({\mu}-pyrazine)M(CO)(PPh_3)_2](SO_3CF_3)_2$ (I: M= RhH; III: M=Ir) or [$(PPh_3)_2$(CO)M(${\mu}$-44'-bipyridyl)M(CO)$(PPh_3)_2](SO_3CF_3)_2$, (II: M=Rh; IV: M=Ir), respectively. Compounds, I, II, III, and IV were characterized by $^1H-NMR$, $^{13}C-NMR$, $^{31}P-NMR$, and infrared spectrum. Ethanol solution of $(PPh_3)_2(CO)MOSO_2CF_3$ (M=Rh, Ir) also reacts with $(TBA)_2$M'$(CN)_4$ (M'=Pd, Pt) to yield trinuclear metal complexes [$(PPh_3)_2$(CO)dM-NCM'$(CN)_2$CN-M(CO)$(PPh_3)_2]$ (V : M=Rh, M'=Pd; VI : M=Rh, M'=Pt; VII: M=Ir, M'=Pd; VIII: M=Ir, M'=Pt). The trinuclear metal complexes V, VI, VII, and VIII are bridged by the cyanide groups. The infrared spectrum of V, VI, VII, and VIII supports the presence of the bridged cyanide and terminal cyanide group.
