  • Recently, numerous modifications of low Reynolds number $k-{\epsilon}$ model have boon carried out with the aid of DNS data. However, the previous models made in this way are too intricate to be used practically. To overcome this shortcoming, a new low Reynolds number $k-{\epsilon}$ model has boon developed by considering the distribution of turbulent properties near the wall. This study proposes the revised a turbulence model for prediction of turbulent flow with adverse pressure gradient and separation. Nondimensional distance $y^+$ in damping functions is changed to $y^*$ and some terms modeled for one dimensional flow in $\epsilon$ equations are expanded into two or three dimensional form. Predicted results by the revised model show an acceptable agreement with DNS data and experimental results. However, for a turbulent flow with severe adverse pressure gradient, an additive term reflecting an adverse pressure gradient effect will have to be considered.

  • Computational results with pseudoplastic fluid flows for fully developed non-Newtonian laminar flows have been obtained. Those consist of the product of friction factor and Modified Reynolds number and Nusselt numbers with respect to the shear rate parameter in an annular pipe. The numerical results of the product of friction factor and Reynolds numbers and the Nusselt numbers for both Newtonian region and the power law region were compared with previously published asymptotic results, respectively. In the present calculations, the product of friction factor and Newtonian Reynolds numbers for pseudoplastic fluid at power law region in annular pipe is 180% less than that for Newtonian fluid. For power law fluids with different power law flow indices, the difference of the product of friction factor and power law Reynolds number between previous and the present results at the power law region is within 0.20%. The solutions also show the effect of the shear rate parameter on the Nusselt number and about 11% increase of Nusselt number at the power region.

  • This study investigates the experimental parameters of particle image velocimetry (PIV) to enhance the measurement technique for turbulent flow fields around a circular cylinder at a Reynolds number (Re) of 1.4×105. At the Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO), we utilized the cavitation tunnel and PIV system to capture the instantaneous flow fields and statistically obtained the mean flow fields. An aspect ratio and blockage ratio of 16.7% and 6.0%, respectively, were considered to minimize the tunnel wall effect on the cylinder wakes. The optimal values of the pulse time and the number of flow fields were determined by comparing the contours of mean streamlines, velocities, Reynolds shear stresses, and turbulent kinetic energy under their different values to ensure accurate and converged results. Based on the findings, we recommend a pulse time of 45 ㎲ corresponding to a particle moving time of 3-4 pixels, and at least 3,000 instantaneous flow fields to accurately obtain the mean flow fields. The results of the present study agree well with those of previous studies that examined the end of the subcritical flow regime.

  • An investigation of low Reynolds number flow in nozzles and diffusers which are widely used in the valveless micropump is presented. Flow characteristics in the nozzle and diffuser are explained in view of viscous effect and flow oscillation induced by pumping membrane. These calculation results show that the rectification property of valveless micropump is due to a flow separation in the diffuser and the separation is largely originated from the flow oscillation. Under the assumptions of steady flow velocity profile and flow separation in the diffuser, simplified analytical models are provided to see the dependency of rectification on the micropump geometry. Geometric parameters of channel length, nozzle throat, chamber size, and converging/diverging angle are depicted through the analytical models in low Reynolds number flow, and the prediction and experimental results are compared. This theoretical study can be used to determine the optimum geometry of valveless micropump.

  • It is known that previous models are unsatisfactory in predicting adverse pressure gradient turbulent flows. In the present paper, a revised low Reynolds number $k-{\varepsilon}$ model is proposed. In this model, a newly developed term is added lo the dissipation rate equation. In order to reflect appropriate effects for an adverse pressure gradient. The added tenn is derived by considering the distribution of mean velocity and turbulent properties in the turbulent flow with, adverse pressure gradient. The new $k-{\varepsilon}$ model was applied to calculations of flat plate flow with adverse pressure gradient, conical diffuser flow and backward facing step flow. It was found that the three numerical results showed better agreement than other models compared with DNS results and experimental ones.

  • Flow patterns of fluid flow in dividing trbe were visualized, and the energy losses due to dividing were measured in laminar dividing flow of the viscoelastic fluid and its solution in tube junctions with dividing angles of $90^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, $65^{\circ}$ and $15^{\circ}$. Two separation zones were observed. swelling of the streamline to the main tube or to lateral tube was observed. The sizes of the separation zones depend on the Reynolds number, the dividing angle and the dividing flow rate. The energy loss coefficients decrease with increasing Reynolds number, but their decreasing rate decreases with increasing Reynolds number as the sizes of the separation zone increase. The effect of dividing angle on the energy loss coefficients and separation is greater for main tube than for the lateral tube.

  • The factors affecting the flow coefficient of a control valve were identified and analyzed. The flow coefficient of a control valve are affected by not only Reynolds Number but also the figure and the roughness of the inlet/outlet pipes. Therefore, the flow coefficient is not a constant value. For the purpose of use in the system such as LRE, requiring the exact flow-coefficient of a control valve, the flow-coefficient should be measured under similar Reynolds Number using the inlet and outlet pipes which have the same figure and roughness with a real system.

  • The flow characteristics in a confined slot jet impinging on a flat plate were investigated by using cinematic Particle Image Velocimetry technique. The three different kinds of confined slot were applied to the jet with a view to evaluating the shape effect and the jet Reynolds number was varied from 250 to 1000 for a fixed jet-to-plate spacing of H/W=5. It was found that the vortex structures in the shear layer are developed with increase of Reynolds number and that the jet becomes unsteady by the interaction of vortex pairs between 500 and 750 of Reynolds number. Finally, the slot shape was proved to be related with the generation timing of vortex pair and the temporal vortex structure.

  • A manipulator is operated for the motion of mechanical hands or arms by mechanical mechanism. When a cup including liquid inside is shifted by a manipulator, it is important to know how a free surface of the liquid moves. In this study, non-dimensional parameters have been found that affect the rise of the free surface in a cup moving with constant acceleration. The non-dimensional parameters are the dimensionless time, the ratio of inertia effect to vicous effect (Reynolds number), aspect ratio of the liquid inside the cup and acceleration ratio (Froude number). Through this study, the height of the free surface rise in a cup has been predicted. Generally the maximum rise of the free surface is dependent on the Reynolds number and Froude number strongly, but on the aspect ratio weakly. But the influence of the aspect ratio on the maximum rise of the free surface in not negligible in the range 10 < Re < 100.

  • Diffuser design is crucial for water-chilled heat storage. Its impact on the system performance is more significant for the underground tank due to inherent limit on the aspect ratio and tank shape. The effect of diffuser shape on the performance of the water-chilled heat storage is numerically investigated. Three dimensional simulation has been conducted for fully incorporating the complex diffuser shape and the non-symmetric tank shape. Mixing at the inlet of the diffuser depends on the inlet Reynolds number, Froude number and the diffuser shape. Three types of the diffuser shape and the broad range of Reynolds number (Re=400, 800, 1200) and Froude number (Fr=0.5, 1.0, 2.0) are examined. The performance of the heat storage tank is evaluated by the thermocline thickness which is reverse to the degree of stratification. The radial regulated plate diffuser, which is the suggested diffuser shape in this study, shows the lowest thermocline thickness in the condition considered.
