In this study, the scale effect on the performance of the podded propeller of tractor type is investigated. Turbulent flow computations are carried out for Reynolds numbers increasing progressively from model scale to full scale using the CFD analysis. The result of the flow calculation for model scale Reynolds numbers agrees well with that of the experiment of a large cavitation tunnel. The existing numerical analysis indicates that the performance of the podded propeller blades is mainly influenced by the advance coefficient and relatively little by the Reynolds number. However, the drag of pod housing with propeller in operation is different from that of pod housing without propeller due to the acceleration and swirl of propeller slipstream which is altered by propeller loading as well as the pressure recovery and friction according to Reynolds number, which suggests that the pod housing drag under the condition of propeller in operation is the key factor of the scale effect on the performance between model and full scale podded propellers. The so called 'drag ratio', which is the ratio of pod housing drag to total thrust of podded propeller, increases as the advance coefficient increases due to accelerated flow in the slipstream of the podded propeller. However, the increasing rate of the drag ratio reduces continuously as the Reynolds number increases from model to full scale progressively. The contribution of hydrodynamic forces, which acts on the parts composed of the pod housing with propeller operating in various loading conditions, to the thrust and the torque of the total propeller unit are presented for a range of Reynolds numbers from model to full scales.

The discharge performance of an impinging-type injector for cavitating flow has been evaluated. The predicted discharge coefficient for cavitating flow agree s well with the measured data showing less than 2% discrepancy. For the case of non- cavitating flow analysis, the disagreement between CFD resu lts and the experimental data is 8%. The discharge coefficient for the cavitating flow decreases with decrea se in the Reynolds number. On the other hand, it increases slightly as the Reynolds number increases for the non-cavitating flow because of the reduced viscous effect. The incipience of cavitation is predicted to occur around the cavitation number of 1.3 for fixed Reynolds number flow. In this environment, the discharge performance is proportional to the cavitation number for cavitating flow while it is independent to the cavitation number for non-cavitating flow regime.

In this paper, the fluid dynamic forces and performances of a moving airfoil in the low Reynolds number flow is addressed. In order to simulate the necessary propulsive force for the moving airfoil in a low Reynolds number flow, a lattice-Boltzmann method is used. The critical Reynolds and Strouhal numbers for the thrust generation are investigated for the four propulsion types. It was found that the Normal P&D type produces the largest thrust with the highest efficiency among the investigated types. The leading edge of the airfoil has an effect of deciding the force production types, whereas the trailing edge of the airfoil plays an important role in augmenting or reducing the instability produced by the leading edge oscillation. It is believed that present results can be used to decide the optimal propulsion types for the given Reynolds number flow.

The combined convective heat transfer from vertical parallel plates with constant temperature has been studied by numerical method. The governing equations for the system are solved by the finite difference method and successive over relaxation scheme for Re$_{L}$ = 50 - 500, Gr = 10$^{4}$, Pr = 0.7. Results for various plate spacings and plate lengths are as follows ; For various plate spacings, the mean Nusselt number increases and then decreases as the dimensionless plate spacing increases. The optimum plate spacing for maximum mean Nusselt number decreases with increasing Reynolds number and can be expressed as a function of Reynolds number. For various plate lengths, the mean plate Nudest number increases as the dimensionless plate length decreases and Reynolds number increases.

The interaction of mixed convection and surface radiation in a printed circuit board(PCB) is investigated numerically. The electronic equipment is modeled by a two-dimensional channel with three hot blocks. In order to calculate the turbulent flow characteristics, the low Reynolds number k-.epsilon. model which is proposed by Launder and Sharma is applied. The S-4 approximation is used to solve the radiative transfer equation. The effects of the Reynolds number and geometric configuration variation of PCB on the flow and heat transfer characteristics are analyzed. As the results of this study, it is found that the thermal boundary layer occured at adiabatic wall in case with thermal radiation included, and the effect of radiation is also found to be insignificant for high Reynolds numbers. It is found, as well, that the heat transfer increases as the Reynolds number and block space increase and the channel height decreases and the heat transfer of vertical channel is greater than that of horizontal channel.
The burning characteristics of interacting droplets with internal circulation in a convective flow are numerically investigated at various Reynolds numbers. The transient combustion of 2-dimensionally arranged droplets, both the fixed droplet distances of 5 radii to 40 radii horizontally and 4 radii to 24 radii vertically, is studied. The results obtained from the present numerical analysis reveal that the transient flame configuration and retardation of droplet internal motion with the horizontal or vertical droplet spacing substantially influence lifetime of interacting droplets. At a low Reynolds number, lifetime of the two droplets with decreasing horizontal droplet spacing increases monotonically, whereas their lifetime with decreasing vertical droplet spacing decreases due to flow acceleration. This flow acceleration effect is reversed when the vertical droplet spacing is smaller than 5 radii in which decreasing flame penetration depth causes the reduction of heat transfer from flame to droplets. At a high Reynolds number, however, lifetime of the first droplet is hardly affected by either the horizontal droplet spacing or flow acceleration effect. Lifetime with decreasing vertical droplet spacing increases due to reduction of flame penetration depth. Lifetime of interacting droplets exhibits a strong dependence on Reynolds number, the horizontal droplet spacing and the vertical droplet spacing and can be con-elated well with these conditions to that of single burning droplet.
Section model test, as the most commonly used method to evaluate the aerostatic and aeroelastic performances of long-span bridges, may be carried out under different conditions of incoming wind speed, geometric scale and wind tunnel facilities, which may lead to potential Reynolds number (Re) effect, model scaling effect and wind tunnel scale effect, respectively. The Re effect and scale effect on aerostatic force coefficients and aeroelastic characteristics of streamlined bridge decks were investigated via 1:100 and 1:60 scale section model tests. The influence of auxiliary facilities was further investigated by comparative tests between a bare deck section and the deck section with auxiliary facilities. The force measurement results over a Re region from about 1×105 to 4×105 indicate that the drag coefficients of both deck sections show obvious Re effect, while the pitching moment coefficients have weak Re dependence. The lift coefficients of the smaller scale models have more significant Re effect. Comparative tests of different scale models under the same Re number indicate that the static force coefficients have obvious scale effect, which is even more prominent than the Re effect. Additionally, the scale effect induced by lower model length to wind tunnel height ratio may produce static force coefficients with smaller absolute values, which may be less conservative for structural design. The results with respect to flutter stability indicate that the aerodynamic-damping-related flutter derivatives 𝘈*2 and 𝐴*1𝐻*3 have opposite scale effect, which makes the overall scale effect on critical flutter wind speed greatly weakened. The most significant scale effect on critical flutter wind speed occurs at +3° wind angle of attack, which makes the small-scale section models give conservative predictions.

A numerical simulation of velocity and temperature fields and Nusselt number distributions is performed by using the algebraic stress model (ASM) for the velocity profiles and low Reynolds number ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model and the algebraic heat flux model(AHFM) for turbulent heat transfer in a $180^{\circ}$ bend with a constant wall heat flux. In the low Reynolds number ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model, turbulent Prandtl number is modified by considering the streamline curvature effect and the non-equilibrium effect between turbulent kinetic energy production and dissipation rate. Every heat flux term presented in the transport equation of turbulent heat flux is reduced to algebraic expressions in a way similar to algebraic stress model. Also. in the wall region, low Reynods number algebraic heat flux model(AHFM) is applied.

A numerical study has been conducted to investigate the effect of inflow supply air temperature and velocity on ventilation effectiveness in an underfloor air conditioning space. A low Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ model is implemented to calculate steady state turbulent velocity distributions. A step-down injection method is used to calculate local and room mean ages from transient concentrations based on the concept of the age of air. Results show that there is a significant effect of Archimedes number on ventilation effectiveness especially for cooling conditions. Reynolds number shows relatively minor effect on velocity distribution and ventilation effectiveness especially for isothermal and heating conditions. It can be concluded that underfloor air conditioning system provides good ventilation characteristics for cooling conditions because of temperature stratification in the space.

The effects of Triangle Groove Strips (TGS) on Vortex-induced Vibration (VIV) suppression of marine riser are numerically investigated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method. The range of Reynolds number in simulations is 4.0 × 104 < Re < 1.2 × 105. The two-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and Shear Stress Transport (SST) k-ω turbulence model are used to calculate the flow around marine riser. The Newmark-β method is employed for evaluating the structure dynamics of marine riser. The effect of the height ratio (ε) of TGS on VIV suppression is evaluated. The amplitude responses, frequency responses, vortex patterns and the flow around the structures are discussed in detail. With the increase of the height ratio of TGS, the suppression effect of TGS on VIV suppression is improved firstly and then weakened. When ε=0.04, the suppression effect of TGS is the best. Compared with the VIV responses of smooth marine riser, the amplitude ratio is reduced by 38.9%, the peak of the lift coefficient is reduced by 69% and the peak of the drag coefficient is reduced by 40% when Re=6.0 × 104. With the increase of Reynolds number, the suppression effect of TGS on VIV suppression is improved firstly and then weakened. When the Reynolds number is 7.0 × 104, the amplitude ratio can be reduced by 40.1%. As to the large-amplitude vibration cases, the TGS show nice suppression effect on VIV.
