  • The need for evidence-based decision making in immunization programs has increased due to the presence of multiple health priorities, limited human resources, expensive vaccines, and limited funds. Countries should establish a group of national experts to advise their Ministries of Health. So far, many nations have formed their own National Immunization Technical Advisory Groups (NITAGs). In the Republic of Korea, the Korea Expert Committee on Immunization Practices (KECIP), established by law in the early 1990s, has made many important technical recommendations to contribute to the decline in vaccine preventable diseases and currently functions as a NITAG. It includes 13 core members and 2 non-core members, including a chairperson. Core members usually come from affiliated organizations in internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, microbiology, preventive medicine, nursing and a representative from a consumer group, all of whom serve two year terms. Non-core members comprise two government officials belonging to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) and the Korea Food and Drug Administration. Meetings are held as needed, but at least twice a year, and sub-committees are formed as a resource for gathering, analyzing, and preparing information for the KECIP meetings. Once the sub-committees or the KCDC review the available data, the KECIP members discuss each issue in depth and develop recommendations, usually by a consensus in the meeting. The KECIP publishes national guidelines and immunization schedules that are updated regularly. KECIP's role is essentially consultative and the implementation of their recommendations may depend on the budget or current laws.

The Korean Journal of Remote Sensing (KJRS) Editorial Office received a report alleging plagiarism in a paper published in KJRS authored by Zong and Kohani (2021). Following a thorough investigation by our Research Ethics Committee, we found significant similarities between the original paper (Lee and Mortari, 2017) and the paper (Zong and Kohani, 2021) published in KJRS. The scope of the plagiarism included a number of identical figures, tables, and equations, as well as textual content. As a result, the Research Ethics Committee of the Korean Society of Remote Sensing has decided to retract the paper (Zong and Kohani. 2021) for deliberately using the ideas, research content, and results of others without proper approval or citation. To preserve academic integrity, we take responsibility for enforcing ethical policies and proceeding with the follow-up actions: 1. Disclosure and preservation of the facts and reasons for the retraction of the plagiarized paper, 2. Prohibition of submissions for the next three years for the authors of the plagiarized paper, 3. Notification to the authors’ affiliated institution of the retraction of the plagiarized paper. We deeply regret to report for retraction of the article and apologize to the readers of KJRS and to the authors of the original work for any inconvenience caused.

  • Integrity of authorship and peer review practices are important considerations for ethical publishing. Criteria for authorship, as delineated in the guidelines by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), have undergone evolution over the decades, and now require fulfillment of four criteria, including the need to be able to take responsibility for all aspects of the manuscript in question. Although such updated authorship criteria were published nearly five years ago, still, many major medical and specialist journals have yet to revise their author instructions to conform to this. Inappropriate authorship practices may include gift, guest or ghost authorship. Existing literature suggests that such practices are still widely prevalent, especially in non-English speaking countries. Another emerging problem is that of peer review fraud, mostly by authors, but also rarely by handling editors. There is literature to suggest that a proportion of such fake peer review may be driven by the support of some unscrupulous external editing agencies. Such inappropriate practices with authorship malpractices or disagreement, or peer review fraud, have resulted in more than 600 retractions each, as identified on the retractions database of Retractionwatch.com. There is a need to generate greater awareness, especially in authors from non-English speaking regions of the world, about inappropriate authorship and unethical practices in peer review. Also, support of any external editing agency should be clearly disclosed by authors at the time of submission of a manuscript.

  • Bifidobacteria comprises up to 25% of the cultivable fecal bacteria in adults and 80% in infants. Many in vivo and clinical research results supporting its efficacy in the prevention and improvement of gastrointestinal health have been accumulated. As a consequence, expert committee WHO/FAO expert committee recommended Bifidobacterium as representative probiotics together with Lactobacillus acidophilus. In this review, research trends in bifidobacteria concerning the classification and identification of the genus Bifidobacterium, modulation of intestinal microflora, improvement of constipation, prevention of diarrhea, alleviation of atopy and allergy, barrier function through antimicrobial activity andimmune enhancement of the host will be introduced. Several gene expression systems based on bifidobacterial plasmids have been developed and successfully used to express several heterologous genes including anticancer proteins in Bifidogacterium. In animal test, bifidobacteria was proven to be a promising candidate for safe gene delivery system which can specifically colonize in the solid tumor.

TC223 표준(안)의 핵심은 사건, 사고에 대한 대비 및 운영 연속성 관리를 의미하는 IPOCM(Incedent Preparedness and Operational Continuity Management) 프레임워크이며 이러한 IPOCM의 개념은 정보통신 인프라 측면에서 사업 연속성에 대한 가이드라인을 제공하는 SC(Standard Committee) 27의 "ISO/IEC 27031 Guidelines for ICT readiness for business continuity" 표준(안)에 기반을 제공하고 있다. 이러한 국제 표준화 동향을 토대로 본 논문에서는 사업연속성을 위한 국내 정보통신 인프라 대비체계에 포함될 주요 구성요소와 구축 요구사항을 제안하고자 한다.

  • Colorectal cancer is one of the most prevalent diseases all over the world. Early screening and start of chemotherapy is effective in decreasing mortality. This type of cancer can be controlled to some extent via a healthy diet rich in fruit and vegetables. Ginseng is a plant which has been consumed as a herbal medicine for thousands of years in Asian countries. Several in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that this plant not only reduces the incidence of colorectal cancer, but also improves patient's status by enhancing the effects of chemotherapy drugs. However, further studies are needed to prove this relationship. We briefly review ginseng and its components such as ginsenosides reported anticancer effects and their mechanisms of action. Understanding these relationships may produce insights into chemical and pharmacological approaches for enhancing the chemo preventive effects of ginsenosides and for developing novel anticancer agents.
