  • PURPOSE. This study evaluated screw loosening and 3D crown displacement after cyclic loading of implant-supported incisor crowns cemented with original titanium bases or with three compatible, nonoriginal components. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A total of 32 dental implants were divided into four groups (n = 8 each): Group 1 used original titanium bases, while Groups 2-4 used compatible components. The reverse torque value (RTV) was evaluated prior to and after cyclic loading (1,200,000 cycles). Samples (prior to and after cyclic loading) were scanned with a microcomputed tomography (micro-CT). Preload and postload files were superimposed by 3D inspection software, and 3D crown displacement analysis was performed using root-mean-square (RMS) values. All datasets were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc analysis. RESULTS. Significant variations were observed in the postload RTV, depending on the titanium base brand (P < .001). The mean postload RTVs were significantly higher in Groups 1 and 2 than in the other study groups. While evaluating 3D crown displacement, the lowest mean RMS value was shown in the original Group 1, with the highest RMS value occurring in Group 4. CONCLUSION. Within the limitations of this in vitro study and under the implemented conditions, it was concluded that the manufacturer brand of the titanium base significantly influenced screw loosening following the fatigue test and influenced 3D crown displacement after cyclic loading.

  • PURPOSE. This study investigated the physical and mechanical changes in the titanium base of three different hybrid abutment materials after cyclic loading by estimating the post-load reverse torque value (RTV), compressive side fulcrum wear pattern of titanium base, and surface roughness. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A total of 24 dental implants were divided into three groups (n = 8 each): Group Z, LD, and P used zirconia, lithium disilicate, and polyetheretherketone, respectively, for hybrid abutment fabrication. RTV was evaluated after cyclic loading with 50 N for 1.2 × 106 chewing cycles. The compressive sides of the titanium bases were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope, and the roughness of the affected areas was measured using an optical profilometer after loading. Datasets were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Mann-Whitney tests with the Bonferroni correction (α = .05). RESULTS. Twenty-three samples passed the test; one LD sample fractured after 770,474 cycles. Post-load RTV varied significantly depending on the hybridabutment material (P = .020). Group P had a significantly higher median of post-load RTVs than group Z (16.5 and 14.3 Ncm, respectively). Groups LD and P showed minor signs of wear, and group Z showed a more pronounced wear pattern. While evaluating compressive side affected area roughness of titanium bases, lower medians were shown in group LD (Ra 0.16 and Rq 0.22 ㎛) and group P (Ra 0.16 and Rq 0.23 ㎛) than in group Z (Ra 0.26 and Rq 0.34 ㎛); significant differences were found only among the unaffected surface and group Z. CONCLUSION. The hybrid abutment material influences the post-load RTV. Group Z had a more pronounced wear pattern on the compressive side of titanium base; however, the surface roughness was not statistically different among the hybridabutment groups.

  • Turbo-pumps have weak points, such as the pumping operation is unstable on the positive slope of the head curve and/or the cavitation occurs at the low suction head. To improve simultaneously both weak points, the first author invented the unique pumping unit composed of the tandem impellers and the peculiar motor with the double rotational armatures. The front and the rear impellers are driven by the inner and the outer armatures of the motor, respectively. Both impeller speeds are automatically and smartly adjusted in response to the pumping discharge, while the rotational torques between both impellers/armatures are counter-balanced. Such speeds contribute to suppress successfully not only the unstable operation at the low discharge but also the cavitation at the high discharge, as verified with the axial flow type pumping unit in the previous paper. Continuously, this paper investigates experimentally the effects of the tandem impeller profiles on the pump performances and the rotational speeds against the discharge, using the impellers whose loads are low and/or high at the normal discharge. The worthy remarks are that (a) the unstable operation is suppressed as expected and the shut off power is scarcely large in the smart control, (b) the blade profile contributes to determine the discharge giving the maximum/minimum rotational speed where the reverse flow may incipiently appears at the front impeller inlet, (c) the tandem impeller profiles scarcely affect the rotational speeds, while the loads of the front and the rear impellers are same, but (d) the impeller with the low load must run faster and the impeller with the high load must run slower at the same discharge to take the same rotational torque, and (e) the reverse flow at the inlet and the swirling velocity component at the outlet of the front impeller with the high load require making the rotational speed of the rear impeller with low load fairly faster at the lower discharge.

  • This study is to evaluate how different bearing surface angles of abutment screw affect the mechanical stability of the joint in the conical seal design implant system. Materials and Methods: Internal connection type regular implants, two-piece cemented type abutments and tungsten carbide/carbon-coated titanium alloy abutment screws were selected. Titanium alloy screws with conical ($45^{\circ}$) and flat ($90^{\circ}$) head designs which fit on to abutment were fabricated. The abutments were tightened to implants with 30 Ncm by digital torque gauge. The loading was applied once to the central axis of abutment. The mean axial displacement was measured using micrometer before and after the tightening and loading (n = 5). The abutment was tightened to implants with 30 Ncm and T-shape stainless steel crown was cemented. Then the change in the amount of reverse-torque was measured after the repeated loading to the central axis, and the place 5 mm away from the central axis. Compressive bending and fatigue strength were measured at the place 5 mm away from the central axis (n = 5). Results: Both groups showed the largest axial displacement when abutment screw tightening and total displacement was greater in the flat head group compared to conical head group (P < 0.05). However, there were no significant differences in reverse torque value, compressive bending and fatigue strength (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, the abutment screw head design had no effect on two groups regarding the joint stability, however the conical head design affected the settlement of abutment resulting in the reduced total displacement.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the kinetic factors of the golf driver swing using the Inverse Dynamics function. For this purpose, joint force were calculated. In order to test the possibility of Inverse Dynamics function(motion-dependent interaction), a triple segmental system was set for wrist, left shoulder and lumbar and joint force working on the anatomical joint region was estimated. For this study, 7 professional golfers were sampled, and then, their driver swings were recorded with two high-speed digital video cameras (180 frames/sec.) to be synthesized into 3-dimensional images and coordinated. Then, Eular's equation was used to produce some kinematic data, which were used to calculate joint force and torque with Newton's function. All data were calculated using LabVIEW 6.1 graphic program. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; It was found that the joint force was generated on wrist, shoulder and lumbar joints in the direction of the target, and that the joint force was stronger in the direction of target immediately before impact. The joint force was generated towards the target to activate the nodes, and then, it was generated in the reverse direction to increase the speed during impact.

  • This paper presents the development of a floating outboard type of compact water jet propulsion system. The planning case of the water jet system is developed by performing precision processing after manufacturing FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastics) from plug mold casting. This system is composed of an intake, impeller, diffuser, reverse bucket, and main shaft. In addition, a rebuilt engine was applied through marine engineering. The water jet propulsion system performance was verified to discharge a maximum $0.29m^3/s$ of flow rate and 37 m/s of flow velocity in a test pool on land. A field test was performed by installing the water jet propulsion device on board a ship that was tested off the coast of Korea. The weight of the hull, engine, and other equipment was approximately 1.2 tons, and the sailing speed was a maximum 22 knots at 3,600 rpm.

  • The variation of a load characteristic in the motor drive is one of the most important consideration. Because the current flowing into the motor generally varies according to the load variation, it needs to design the motor drive circuit properly in accordance with the load variation. However, the load variation of the drum washing machine is irregular and large due to the water flow and reverse load torque. Therefore, to design the motor drive circuit considering this load pattern, simulation results shows the load pattern modeling of the drum washing machine based on the physical analysis in this paper.

  • This article deals with the analytic results on the development and application of the Spherical CVT. The Spherical CVT is marked by its simple configuration, the infinite torque multiplication characteristic, and the smooth transitions between forward/neutral/reverse states of output speed. In this study, we describe the conceptual principles behind the Spherical CVT and some applications of it, which we developed recently. And, we propose the shifting algorithm based on the analytic consideration of CVT powertrain system. Contrary to conventional shifting algorithms using the OOL(optimal operating line) of the power source, the proposed shifting algorithm is represented as a $2^{nd}$ order equation in an explicit form, and it reveals the possibility of theoretic design of all optimal controller. As an example, we present numerical results that demonstrate the energy saving possible and the proposed shifting algorithm from the use of the Spherical CVT over standard reduction gear unit, using an ideal dc motor model.

  • This paper presents an energy saving hydrostatic pressure exchanger for sea water desalination equipment. In a reverse osmosis(RO) system for desalinating sea water, more than 70 percent of the supplied sea water, brines which were impassable through RO membrane are bypassed, resulting in high energy losses. In this paper, a hydrostatic pressure exchanger consisting of an embedded water hydraulic piston motor and a water hydraulic piston pump was proposed and investigated in order to recover the energy of the bypassed brines. The pressurized brines are supplied to the embedded water hydraulic piston motor as power sources and the water hydraulic piston pump is driven by the output torque of the embedded water hydraulic piston motor as well as electric motor. Consequently, the energy of the bypassed brines can be recovered. To examine the electric energy saving characteristics of the hydrostatic pressure exchanger, a simulation model was constructed using commercial software and experiments were conducted. Through the results of simulation and experiment, the feasibility of the electric energy saving effect of the proposed hydrostatic pressure exchanger was investigated.

  • A mathematical model for the flowrate and rotation speed of RCP during idling was established. The numerical calculation method and dimensionless method were used to analyze the flow, head, torque and pressure and speed changes under idle conditions. Regularity, using the Q criterion vortex identification judgment method combined with surface flow spectrum morphology analysis to diagnose the vortex dynamic characteristics on RCP blade. On impeller blade, there is two oscillations in the pressure ratio on pressure surface in blade outlet region. The velocity on the suction surface is two times more oscillating than the inlet of blade, and there is an intersection with the velocity ratio curve on pressure surface. On blade of guide vane, the pressure ratio increases along the inlet to outlet direction, and the speed ratio decreases with the increase of idle time. There is a vortex that rotates counterclockwise on the suction surface, and the streamline on the suction surface of blade is subjected to the entrainment and blocking action of the vortex creates a large reverse flow in the main flow region. There are two vortices at the outlet of guide vane suction side and the vortices are in opposite directions.
