  • Blue tilapia, Oreochromis aureus swim-up fry were fed,0, 1, 10, or 60 ppm $17\alpha-methyltestosterone$(MT) for 30 days (sex reversal period). Fish that had been fed 0 ppm MT during the sex reversal period were subsequently fed 0 ppm MT (0-0), 10 ppm MT (0-10) or 60 ppm MT (0-60) for the next 57 days (post sex reversal period) ; fish that had been fed 60 ppm MT during the sex reversal period were subsequently fed 0 ppm MT (60-0), 10 ppm MT (60-10), or 60 ppm MT (60-60) during the post sex reversal period. One group was fed 1 ppm MT (1-1), while another group was fed 10 ppm MT (10-10) during the entire 87-day experiment. There was a significant inverse relationship between concentration of MT and percentage body protein and percentage body fat at the end of the sex reversal period, while there was a significant positive relationship between concentration of MT and percentage body moisture. MT treatment during the post sex reversal period had greater effects on body composition of males at the end of the post sex reversal period than did MT treatment during the sex reversal period. There was a significant inverse relationship between MT concentrations, during both the sex reversal and post sex reversal periods, and gonosomatic indices (GSI) in males. In females, there was a significant inverse relationship between MT concentrations during the post sex reversal period and GSI.

  • This study investigates the applicability of the time reversal concept in modem acoustics to the Lamb waves, which have been widely studied for defect detection in plate-like structures. According to conventional time reversal acoustics, an input signal can be reconstructed at an excitation point if an output signal recorded at another point is reversed in the time domain and emitted back to the original source point. However, the application of a time reversal process(TRP) to Lamb wave propagations is complicated due to velocity and amplitude dispersion characteristics of Lamb waves and reflections from the boundaries of a structure. In this study, theoretical investigations are presented to better understand the time reversibility of Lamb waves. In particular, the effects of within-mode dispersion, multimode dispersion, amplitude dispersion, and reflections from boundaries on the TRP are theoretically formulated. Simple numerical case studies are conducted to validate the theoretical findings of this study.

  • The effects of token and social reinforcement on inappropriate study behaviors of nursery school children were investigated. The subjects were three nursery school boys, and the target behaviors were : 1) out-of-seat behaviors, 2) bothering other children, and 3) disruptive behaviors. The ABAB(Reversal) design was used in this experiment. It consisted of four periods : baseline, reinforcement I, reversal, and reinforcement II. During the reinforcement period, social reinforcement as well as token reinforcement was applied. In all three subjects, inappropriate study behaviors decreased during the reinforcement periods (I, II), and increased during the reversal period, showing the effects of token and social reinforcement. The subjects showed stability in three post-experimental tests, indicating that modification of inappropriate study behaviors was being maintained.

  • During the last three years, the possibility of the time reversal Lamb waves has been paid attention to for structural health monitoring of a plate. This study proposes a numerical scheme which can simulate the spatial focusing of time reversal Lamb waves on a rectangular plate. In this scheme, a time reversal process is formulated in the frequency domain using active virtual sensors being equivalent to the mirror effects of an actual sensor due to wave reflection on the plate boundary. Forward and backward Lamb wave propagations are represented by scalar functions for simulating the spatial focusing of time reversal Lamb waves. The validity of the proposed scheme is demonstrated through the comparison to the results of finite element analysis in which the spatial focusing of time reversal Lamb waves is realized by wafer-type piezoelectric(PZT) transducers collocated on a rectangular plate.

  • This paper presents the analysis of a time reversal process for $A_0$ Lamb wave mode($A_0$ mode) on a rectangular plate. The dispersion characteristic equation of the $A_0$ mode is approximated using the Timoshenko beam theory. A virtual sensor array model is developed to consider the effects of reflections occurring on the plate boundary on the time reversal process. The time reversal process is formulated in the frequency domain using the virtual sensor array model. The reconstructed signal is obtained in the time domain through an inverse fast Fourier transform. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated through the comparison to the numerical simulation results computed by the finite element analysis.

  • Researches using time reversal acoustics(TRA) for impact localization have been paid attention to recently. Dispersion characteristics of Lamb waves, which restrict the utility of classical nondestructive evaluation based on time-of-flight information, can be compensated through the application of TRA to Lamb waves on a plate. This study investigates the spatial focusing performance of time reversal Lamb waves on a plate using finite element analysis. In particular, the virtual sensor effect caused by multiple wave reflections at the boundaries of a plate is shown to enable the spatial focusing of Lamb waves though a very small number of surface-bonded piezoelectric(PZT) sensors are available. The time window size of forward response signals, are normalized with respect to the number of virtual active sensors. Then their effects on the spatial focusing performance of Lamb waves are investigated.

  • This paper deals with an analytical study on the aileron reversal characteristics of anisotropic composite aircraft wings modelled as thin-walled beam and having extension-twist structural couplings caused by Circumferentially Uniform Stiffness (CUS) layup scheme. For a study on the aileron reversal of CUS composite wings, it is essential to consider the following effects such as extension-twist structural coupling, wing aspect ratio, and ratio of span-wise and chord-wise length of aileron to wing, initial angle of attack, and sweep angle, etc. The results on the aileron reversal could have a significant role in more efficient designs of thin-walled composite wing aircraft for which this aeroelastic instability is one of the most critical ones.

  • Epigenetic silencing is considered to be a major mechanism for loss of activity in tumor suppressors. Reversal of epigenetic silencing by using inhibitors of DNA methyltransferase (DNMT) or histone deacetylases (HDACs) such as 5-Aza-CdR and FK228 has shown to enhance cytotoxic activities of several anticancer agents. This study aims to assess the combinatorial effects of genesilencing reversal agents (5-Aza-CdR and FK228) and oxaliplatin in gastric cancer cells, i.e., Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-negative SNU-638 and EBV-positive SNU-719 cells. The doublet combinatorial treatment of 5-Aza-CdR and FK228 exhibited synergistic effects in both cell lines, and this was further corroborated by Zta expression induction in SNU-719 cells. Three drug combinations as 5-Aza-CdR/FK228 followed by oxaliplatin, however, resulted in antagonistic effects in both cell lines. Simultaneous treatment with FK228 and oxaliplatin induced synergistic and additive effects in SNU-638 and SNU-719 cells, respectively. Three drug combinations as 5-Aza-CdR prior to FK228/oxaliplatin, however, again resulted in antagonistic effects in both cell lines. This work demonstrated that efficacy of doublet synergistic combination using DNMT or HDACs inhibitors can be compromised by adding the third drug in pre- or post-treatment approach in gastric cancer cells. This implies that the development of clinical trial protocols for triplet combinations using gene-silencing reversal agents should be carefully evaluated in light of their potential antagonistic effects.
