  • In recent years various document ranking methods such as Relevance. R-Distance and K-Distance have been developed wh~ch can be used in thesaurus-based boolean retrieval systems. They give high quality document rankings in many cases by using term dependence lnformatlon from a thesaurus. However, they suffer from several problems resulting from inefficient and Ineffective evaluation of boolean operators AND. OR and NOT. In this paper we propose new thesaurus-based document ranking methods called KB-FSM and KB-EBM by exploitmg the enhanced fuzzy set model and the extended boolean model. The proposed methods overcome the problems of the previous methods and use term dependencies from a thesaurs effectively. We also show through performance comparison that KB-FSM and KBEBM provide higher retrieval effectiveness than Relevance. R-D~stance and K-Distance.

  • This study is an exploratory research on the user relevance criteria in Korean search service environments that provide integrated search results. Data were collected from 10 participants using a semi-structured interview technique. The participants conducted a web search using integrated search services, such as Naver or Daum on a self-selected topic. They were asked to judge the relevance of retrieved documents and to report their relevance criteria. As a result, the research indicated 8 user-defined relevance and non-relevance criteria. The research shows that specificity and richness are the two most important criteria yet, the user's relevance criteria have not changed much despite the change in search environment.

  • In this paper, we propose the construction of multi-queries and consistency principle for the user's emotion-based music retrieval system. The features used in the system are MPEG-7 audio descriptors, which are international standards recommended for content-based audio retrievals. In addition we propose the method to determine the weight that represent the importance of each descriptor for each emotion in order to reduce the computation. Also, the proposed retrieval algorithm that uses the relevance feedback based on consistency principal and multi-queries improves the success ratio of musics corresponding to user's emotion.

  • In this paper, we present an image retrieval method for improving retrieval performance by fusion of probabilistic method and query point movement. In the proposed algorithm, the similarity for probabilistic method and the similarity for query point movement are fused in the computation of the similarity between a query image and database image. The probabilistic method used in this paper is suitable for handling negative examples. On the other hand, query point movement deals with the statistical property of positive examples. Combining these two methods, our goal is to overcome their shortcoming. Experimental results show that the proposed method yields better performances over the probabilistic method and query point movement, respectively.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate what level of difference in precision would be significantly perceived by a human user of an information retrieval system. Not many researches have been conducted with regards to this issue in information retrieval field. Despite the non-significant results, there were several interesting findings in recognizing different levels of precision rates. The correctness of relevance task had little to do with the taken time for the task. In addition, the strong relationship between the subjects' topic familiarity and rate of correct judgments is one of the most interesting results in this study. It turned out that the subjects have more difficulty in a situation they have to judge between the two lists having more non-relevant documents than in a situation they do between the lists haying more relevant documents. Finally, the serious influence from the first top N documents in a list for relevance judgment task has been confirmed.

  • A great deal of research has been made to model the vagueness and uncertainty in information retrieval. One such research is fuzzy ranking models, which have been showing their superior performance in handling the uncertainty involved in the retrieval process. In this study we develop a new fuzzy ranking model based on the user preference. Through the experiments on the TREC-2 collection of Wall Street Journal documents, we show that the proposed method outperforms the conventional fuzzy ranking models.

  • This study tests the hypotheses that city slogan reduces the retrieval of city memory unrelated to the slogan from the long term memory and that some variables moderate this effect, using the experimental method. The theoretical basis for the hypotheses is from the structure of the long term memory and the principle of memory retrieval discussed in ANM(Associative Network Model). For the test of hypotheses, the study adopted 4 experimental groups (2(slogan relevance: high or low) * 2(slogan concreteness: high or low)) and 1 control group. Each experimental group was exposed to one slogan corresponding to its condition while the control group was not. Then, the recall score was compared among experimental and control groups. One hundred and seventy-four undergraduate students belonging to the college of the authors participated in the study. The sample group was between 18 and 27 years of age, with an average of 22.4 years, and 54 percent comprised males. Results showed that city slogan had a negative effect on the retrieval of city memory unrelated to the slogan in most experimental conditions. This effect was more evident when the slogan had high relevance or high concreteness. But the main effect did not appear when the slogan had low relevance and low concreteness.

  • An apparel products retrieval system was proposed in which users can refer to products using Kansei evaluation values. The system adopts relevance feedback using history of the retrieval to learn the tendency of user evaluation. The system is based on a vector space retrieval model using products images expression as semantic scales. The system makes a query from user inputting information and retrieves closest products from the database. Revising algorithms of the difference method. linear multiple regression performed to investigate the effectiveness and criteria of the search. As a result of evaluation of the accuracy, it was found that the linear multiple regression and the neural network models are effective for the retrieval considering the individual Kansei.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a useful relevance feedback retrieval technique that can be applied to the current Boolean retrieval system. A feedback retrieval technique based on user model is recommended here to achieve this objective. To prove the usefulness of this feedback retrieval technique, two enhanced Boolean retrieval models including DNF model and P-norm model were evaluated first through retrieval effectiveness experiments. After selecting DNF model as the retrieval model, two feedback retrieval experiments were performed using initial and extended user models. It is proved that the feedback retrieval based on user model can greatly enhance the effectiveness of a Boolean retrieval system with a small modification.
