  • Background: The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the pelvic compression belt (PCB) on the thickness of the transversus abdominis (TrA) during active straight leg raising (ASLR). Methods: Thirty healthy subjects (10 men and 20 women) volunteered to participate in this study. The thickness of TrA was measured using a real-time ultrasonic diagnostic imaging system. Subjects were instructed to rest in a resting (hook-lying) position and to perform ASLR with and without the PCB. The PCB was positioned below the anterior superior iliac spine with stabilizing pressure from elastic bands. Results: In the resting position and during ASLR, the thickness of the TrA significantly differed between subjects with and without PCB (p<.05). In addition, there was a significant interaction between the measurement position and the presence or absence of PCB (p<.05). Conclusions: These findings suggest that the PCB may affect deep core muscles such as TrA during various activities. Further studies are required to generalize the results of the present study.

  • In this study, we implemented the pulse transit time (PTT) system to examine usefulness of the monitoring method of distensibility and elasticity using photoplethysmography sensor in vivo. PTT is defined as the time interval between the peak of QRS complex in ECG signal and the maximum slope point of photoplethysmography. these two signals were converted to digital data by means of AID converter, then PTT was evaluated by heartbeat using PC. Results of analysis were displayed as a graph using spline interpolation method. The variance of PTT was measured repetitiously to verify efficiency of PTT system in resting state and hyperemic state. Repeated measurement of PTT was not same value but showed that coefficients of correlation were related with each other as 0.8302 (P<0.01) in resting state. And also repeated measurement of PTT showed significant correlation as 0.868 (P<0.01) in the hyperemic state. These result showed that PTT is reflect on transient pressure variance in the artery and is very useful method for the evaluation of prognosis of the hypertension and arteriosclerosis.

  • In this study. respiratory efforts were monitored by the change of pulse transit time (PTT) which is related with the arterial pressure PTT is the time interval between the peak of R wave in ECG and the maximal slope point of photoplethysmogram(PPG). Biosignals, ECG and finger photoplethysmogram(PPG), were converted to digital data, and PTT was evaluated in personal computer with every heart beat. Results were presented as a graph using spline interpolation. The software was implemented in C$\^$++/ as a window-based application program. PTT was periodically changed according to airflow in resting respiration. In the resting respiration, PTT was changed according to the respiratory cycle. The amplitude of PTT fluctuation was increased by deep respiration, and increased by partial airway obstruction. These results suggest that PTT is responsible to respiratory effort which could be evaluated by the pattern of PTT change. And it is expected that PTT could be applied in the monitoring of respiratory effort by noninvasive methods, and is very useful method for the evaluation of respiratory distress.

  • Objective: This study aimed to compare muscle structure, balance, and gait parameters between healthy adults and persons with stroke and to analyze the correlation among these variables. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Twenty persons with stroke (11 male, 9 female) and twenty healthy participants (9 male, 11 female) were included. Ultrasound images of the triceps surae and the tibialis anterior were acquired in sitting resting, sitting co-contraction, and standing resting positions and also during the functional reach test (FRT) and single leg anterior reaching test (SLART). Muscle thickness and fascicle length were measured. Spatiotemporal parameters of gait were measured using a pressure walkway. Gait speed, cadence, step length, stride length, stance time, and swing time were measured. Results: Changes in percent fascicle length were significantly greater in the gastrocnemius and soleus (SOL) muscles of healthy adults in the sitting co-contraction position (p<0.05). The percent fascicle length of the SOL in FRT and SLART were significantly greater in healthy adults (p<0.05). The mid-stance phase of stroke patients was shorter than healthy adults (p<0.05). A negative correlation was observed between percent fascicle length of the SOL in the sitting co-contraction position and the proportion of the mid-stance phase (p<0.05). Conclusions: The function of the triceps surae is affected in persons with stroke when compared with healthy adults. This can lead to difficulty in performing tasks that involve forward transfer of weight. If the triceps surae is not sufficiently secured, the possibility of compensation in the stance phase increases during gait.

  • In this study, the response and behavior of machine foundations resting on dry and saturated sand was investigated experimentally. A physical model was manufactured to simulate steady state harmonic load applied on a footing resting on sandy soil at different operating frequencies. Total of (84) physical models were performed. The parameters that were taken into consideration include loading frequency, size of footing and different soil conditions. The footing parameters are related to the size of the rectangular footing and depth of embedment. Two sizes of rectangular steel model footing were used. The footings were tested by changing all parameters at the surface and at 50 mm depth below model surface. Meanwhile, the investigated parameters of the soil condition include dry and saturated sand for two relative densities; 30 % and 80 %. The dynamic loading was applied at different operating frequencies. The response of the footing was elaborated by measuring the amplitude of displacement using the vibration meter. The response of the soil to dynamic loading includes measuring the stresses inside soil media by using piezoelectric sensors. It was concluded that the final settlement (St) of the foundation increases with increasing the amplitude of dynamic force, operating frequency and degree of saturation. Meanwhile, it decreases with increasing the relative density of sand, modulus of elasticity and embedding inside soils. The maximum displacement amplitude exhibits its maximum value at the resonance frequency, which is found to be about 33.34 to 41.67 Hz. In general, embedment of footing in sandy soils leads to a beneficial reduction in dynamic response (displacement and excess pore water pressure) for all soil types in different percentages accompanied by an increase in soil strength.

  • In this study, the finite element method using 8-node isoparametric element is developed theoretically and simulated to see the deformation of soil and plate, when the circular plate resting on Boussinesq's soil type is loaded axisymmetrically. The results of numerical analysis using the Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion, and experimental analysis are approximative, assuming that soil is elasto-plastic medium. The paper shows that the plastic zone of soil medium is displayed at the near the edge of plate at the first place; when the plastic zone of soil medium is linked around central axis, the external load is termed by critical load, and then the contact pressure changes abruptly, in this case it is approved to be the risk of shear failure.

  • This paper presents a comparative study of analytical method, finite element method (FEM) and Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) for analysis of a contact problem. The problem consists of a functionally graded (FG) layer resting on a half plane and pressed with distributed load from the top. Firstly, analytical solution of the problem is obtained by using theory of elasticity and integral transform techniques. The problem is reduced a system of integral equation in which the contact pressure are unknown functions. The numerical solution of the integral equation was carried out with Gauss-Jacobi integration formulation. Secondly, finite element model of the problem is constituted using ANSYS software and the two-dimensional analysis of the problem is carried out. The results show that contact areas and the contact stresses obtained from FEM provide boundary conditions of the problem as well as analytical results. Thirdly, the contact problem has been extended based on the MLP. The MLP with three-layer was used to calculate the contact distances. Material properties and loading states were created by giving examples of different values were used at the training and test stages of MLP. Program code was rewritten in C++. As a result, average deviation values such as 0.375 and 1.465 was obtained for FEM and MLP respectively. The contact areas and contact stresses obtained from FEM and MLP are very close to results obtained from analytical method. Finally, this study provides evidence that there is a good agreement between three methods and the stiffness parameters has an important effect on the contact stresses and contact areas.

  • Water purifiers have a quite different characteristic in comparison with general membrane water treatment processes in which the running and resting are repeated dozens of times a day. In the case of water purifiers using reverse osmosis membranes, this characteristic makes a phenomenon that the total dissolved solids (TDS) of permeate in water purifiers at the beginning of running shows a higher value than a normal value (TDS reduction is lower than a normal value). It is called "TDS creep". The effects of resting times and feed concentrations on the TDS creep were investigated. The feed flushing, the volume increase in permeate side and the flushing with purified water were applied to reduce TDS creep and the effectiveness were observed. Among these trials, the minimization of concentration between feed and permeate side of reverse osmosis membrane like the flushing with purified water can be an ultimate solution to reduce the TDS creep.

  • Replacement of the aortic valve in a normal or large aortic root can be accomplished with ease and safety in most instances. The presence of a narrowed aortic annulus remains a problem in that the replaced smaller prosthetic valve has a significant resting pressure gradient across the orifice. This narrowing causes not only technical difficulties, but also increased mortality and post-op. complication. Therefore this problem deserves special attention. This report presents our experience with a case of a small aortic root caused by rheumatic heart disease [AI and MS]. This is the method of enlargement of the aortic annulus with a woven Dacron patch and replacement of a larger prosthetic aortic valve combined with mitral valve replacement.
