  • This paper proposes a restarting method for extended electromotive force (EEMF)-based sensorless permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive systems. The sensorless PMSM drive systems generally estimate the rotor speed and angle based on EEMF. However, if the inverter is stopped while the PMSM is rotating, the initial rotor speed and angle are required for restart. Therefore, the proposed restarting method estimates the initial rotor speed and angle using the short-circuit current generated by applying zero voltage vector from the inverter. The validity of the proposed method is verified by simulation and experimental results.

  • This study investigates the effect of process stopping and restarting on the microstructure and local nanoindentation properties of 316L stainless steel manufactured via selective laser melting (SLM). We find that stopping the SLM process midway, exposing the substrate to air having an oxygen concentration of 22% or more for 12 h, and subsequently restarting the process, makes little difference to the density of the restarted area (~ 99.8%) as compared to the previously melted area of the substrate below. While the microstructure and pore distribution near the stop/restart area changes, this modified process does not induce the development of unusual features, such as an inhomogeneous microstructure or irregular pore distribution in the substrate. An analysis of the stiffness and hardness values of the nano-indented steel also reveals very little change at the joint of the stop/restart area. Further, we discuss the possible and effective follow-up actions of stopping and subsequently restarting the SLM process.

  • The genetic algorithm(GA), an optimization technique based on the theory of natural selection, has proven to be relatively robust means to search for global optimum. It is converged near to the global optimum point without auxiliary information such as differentiation of function. When studying some optimization problems with continuous variables, it was found that premature saturation was reached that is no further improvement in the object function could be found over a set of iterations. Also, the general GA oscillates in the region of the new global optimum point so that the speed of convergence is decreased. This paper is to propose the concept of restarting and elitist preserving strategy as a measure to overcome this difficulty. Some benchmark examples are studied involving 3-bar truss and cantilever beam with plane stress elements. The modifications to GA improve the speed of convergence.

  • The optimization of many engineering design problems requires a nonlinear programming algorithm that is robust and efficient. A general-purpose nonlinear optimization program IDOL (Interactive Design Optimization Library) is developed based on the Augmented Lagrange Mulitiplier (ALM) method. The ideas of selecting a good initial design point, using resonable initial values for Lagrange multipliers, constraints scaling, descent vector restarting, and dynamic stopping criterion are employed for computational enhancement to the ALM method. A descent vector is determined by using the Broydon-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) method. For line search, the Incremental-Search method is first used to find bounds on the solution, then the bounds are reduced by the Golden Section method, and finally a cubic polynomial approximation technique is applied to locate the next design point. Seven typical test problems are solved to show IDOL efficient and robust.

  • This paper investigates the restart performance of sensorlessly controlled IPMSM Fan motor free-running in middle or high speed range just after inverter power off. There could be some difficulties to extract exact position information by using conventional sensorless control for restarting the motor because of stopped inverter operation. To solve this problem, we proposes to use low cost hall sensor. Using a hall sensor with SMO (Sliding Mode Observer) give us a solution to facilitate rotor position information extraction. The algorithm in this paper shows a certain way of the restarting method.

  • Metal halide lamps have been made suitable for use in outdoor illumination systems over many years. They are also widely used in application and commercial lighting due to their attracting properties such as good quality color, rendering and high efficiency. Over the past few years, a considerable number of studies have been conducted on the electronic ballast with hot restarting and resonance phenomenon. However, very few attempts have been made at the adaptive ignition method according to lamp state. This paper proposes an electronic ballast for metal halide lamps with an igniter for adaptive ignition. The proposed electronic ballast can generate different ignition voltages according to the arc tube state. The experimental results showed that the proposed ballast circuit using adaptive igniter is suitable for 70W HQI lamps.

  • In this paper, we propose a Probabilistic Tabu Search(PTS) method for hydro-thermal scheduling. Hydro scheduling has many constraints and very difficult to solve the optimal schedule because it has many local minima. To solve the problem effectively, the proposed method uses two procedures, one is Tabu search procedure that plays a role in local search, and the other is Restarting procedure that enables to diversify its search region. To adjust parameters such as a reducing rate and initial searching region, search strategy is selected according to its probability after Restarting procedure. In order to show the usefulness of the proposed method, the PTS is applied on two cases which have dependent hydro plants and compared to those of other method. The simulation results show it is very efficient and useful algorithm to solve the hydro-thermal scheduling problem.

  • The most of metalhalide lamps is what the momentary restarting cannot be realized when the arc tube is in the hot condition. The discharge starting voltage of arc tube in the hot condition is much higher than in the cold condition in proportion to the gaseous pressure. Therefore it takes about ten minutes to restart the metal Halide lamps, that is to say, it is possible to start when the pressure and the temperature are decreased. But, if the lamp is restarted in the hot condition, we must supply the high voltage pulse with 15kV between the both electrodes of lamp. The proposed ignitor has two ignitors. If we connect each ignitor at the both sides, the high voltages of two different frequencies are generated. If so, when the one of the ignitor generates the highest voltage and the other applied to elecrodes of the lamp. In this way, we can restart the lamp with the voltage 15kV, even if the lamp is in the hot condition.
