  • To evaluate inelastic seismic responses of multi-span bridge structures, the capacity spectrum method(CSM) incorporating the equivalent single-degree-of freedom(ESDOF) method is presented. Application of the CSM incorporating the ESDOF method is illustrated by example analysis for symmetric and asymmetric bridge structures. To investigate an accuracy of the CSM, the maximum displacements estimated by the CSM are compared to those by inelastic time history analysis for several artificial earthquakes. The results show that the CSM provided conservative estimates of the maximum displacements for the symmetric and asymmetric bridge structures, and the trend of conservative estimates of the asymmetric bridge structures was significantly larger than that of the symmetric bridge structure.

  • This paper deals with a position control problem of a hydraulic proportional position control system using a friction compensation control. There are many nonlinearities in hydraulic systems. With only proportional controller, response is slow and steady-state error cannot be compensated properly. Controller designed in this paper achieves fast transient response through the velocity and acceleration feedback and good steady-state response through the friction compensator. A/D and D/A board is employed for data acquisition and manipulation. The experimental results are compared with computer simulation results using Matlab.

  • First, in this paper we propose a new dead best control system design technique by which we can specify a transient response before the settling time. Though the resultant system has the same system configuration as Reference[1], that is realized by adapting the performance index which includes the term of the square of difference between specified and pracitical responses. Next, we state a technique which gives the dead beat control system robustness and construct a robust dead beat control system. Simulations of the proposed dead beat control and robust dead beat control systems show expected results.

  • A $50{\times}50{\mu}m^2$ aluminum micromirror array is fabricated using shadow evaporation process. The fabrication process is very simple with use of shadow evaporation process, and the micromirror array has a high fill-factor. The static and dynamic characteristics such as deflection angle vs. applied voltage, step response, and frequency response are measured using a contact free optical measurement technique. The downward threshold voltage was 8 V, step response time was $13.5{\mu}s$ when 32 V step voltage applied, and a resonance observed at 11kHz. The lifetime of micromirror with anti-stiction coating was tested and micromirror operated successfully over 200 million cycles of touch-down operations.

  • Recently the authors tried to find damage position only using measured frequency response functions. According to their work, it seems that the algorithm is very practical since it needs only measured frequency responses while other methods require exact analytic model. But when applying the method to a real structure, it requires lots of experiment. The authors, in this time, propose a method to reduce its experimental load by detecting damage within a substructure. This method searches damages not within an entire structure but within substructures. In addition, damage severity was treated in this paper since it is worthy to know damage severity. Optimization technique is used to estimate damage level using measured responses and damage model. Two test examples, a plate and a jointed structure, are chosen to verify the suggesting method.

  • The housing of the fuel injector supports the rod, the niddle valve and the solenoid. Based on the procedure of process design, in this paper, the forming operation is designed by the rigid-plastic finite element method. The metal flow during the forming of the fuel injector housing is axisymmetric until the final forming process. The response surface method has been performed to reduce the under-fill and the maximum effective strain. From the results of RSM, the second order regression model of equation is calculated by the least square method and used to determine the optimal values of design variables by simultaneously considering the responses. It is noted that upper under-fill is affected by the design variables of the $2^{nd}$ forming process and lower under-fill is affected by the design variables of the 1st forming process.

  • The fuel injector is a pa.1 that controls the fuel supply of automotive engine. The housing of the fuel injector supports the rod, the needle valve and the solenoid. In this study, the rigid-plastic FE-analysis by using the design of experiments (DOE) and the response surface methodology (RSM) has been performed to produce the product reducing the under-fill and the maximum effective strain. From the results of DOE, the stem of counter punch and the face angle of punch at the $1^{st}$ process, and the stem of punch at the $2^{nd}$ process were determined as the significant design variables far each response such as the upper under-fill, lower under-fill and the maximum effective strain. From the results of RSM, the optimal values of the design variables have been also determined by simultaneously considering the responses.

  • Joint stiffness can affect the vibration characteristics of car body structures. Therefore, it should be included in vehicle system model. In this paper, a numerical approximation of joint stiffness is presented considering joint flexibility of thin walled beam-jointed structures. Using the proposed method, it is possible to optimize joint structures considering the change of section shapes in vehicle structures. The numerical approximation of joint stiffness is derived using the response surface method in terms of beam section properties. The study shows that joint stiffnesses can be effectively determined in designing vehicle structures.

  • Juvenile and transitional-juvenile wood samples from loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) were immersed in water to investigate longitudinal and tangential swelling properties. Increment cores from twenty-six loblolly pine trees were sampled at breast height (1.37 m). Earlywood rings 5 and 9 were separated from the core, extracted, oven-dried and immersed in water at room temperature. The variance in longitudinal swell was significant for ring 5 compared to ring 9 (p = 0.001). It was found that tangential swell might predict longitudinal swelling of juvenile wood at ring 9 but not at ring 5. Poor correlation in ring 5 suggests that swelling response in younger juvenile wood may differ. The swell response at ring 5 did not follow the shrinkage models discussed in the literature while ring 9 adhered to the expected curve.
