In this work, graphene was prepared by modified Hummers method and prepared graphene was applied to electrode materials for supercapacitor. In addition, to enhance the electrochemical performance of graphene, carbon black was deposited onto graphene via chemical reduction. The effect of the carbon black content incorporated on the electrochemical properties of the graphene-based electrodes was investigated. It was found that nano-scaled carbon black aggregates were deposited and dispersed onto the graphene by the chemical reduction of acid treated carbon black and graphite oxide. From the cyclic voltammograms, carbon black-deposited graphene (CB-GR) showed improved electrochemical performance, i.e., current density, quicker response, and better specific capacitance than that of pristine graphene. This indicates that the carbon black deposited onto graphene served as an conductive materials between graphene layers, leading to reducing the contact resistance of graphene and resulted in the increase of the charge transfer between graphene layers by bridge effect.

In this study, the effect of hot water supply flow rates on energy consumption for radiant floor heating system in apartment were researched by computer simulation. The parametric study of different hot water supply flow rates was done with regard to energy performance and control characteristics, respectively. Also the effect of different hot water supply flow rates on the hot water supply temperatures is studied. As a result, energy consumption were reduced but the response time is increased by reducing the supply flow rate. And energy consumption can be saved by adjusting the hot water supply temperatures with different supply flow rates.

An improved procedure for earthquake resistant design of multistory building structures is proposed in this study. The effect of gravity load on seismic response of structures is evaluated through nonlinear dynamic analyses of a single story example structure. The presence of gravity load tends to initiate plastic hinge formation in earlier stage of a strong earthquake. However, the effect of gravity load seems to disapper as ground motion is getting stronger. And one of shortcomings in current earthquake resistant codes is overestimation of gravity load effects when earthquake load is applied at the same time so that it may leads to less inelastic deformation or structural damage in upper stories, and inelastic deformation is increased in lower stories. Based on these observation, an improved procedure for earthquake resistant design is derived by reducing the factor for gravity load and inceasing that for seismic load. Structures designed by the proposed design procedure turned out to have increased safety and stability against strong earthquakes.
The effect of borehole thermal resistance on the borehole length is studied. In performing this work a new concept BLRR(borehole length reduction rate) is developed based on the line source model. The solution of line source model is shown to be valid through the comparison with the data of thermal response test. It is shown that BLRR is a function of soil thermal conductivity(k) and borehole thermal resistance($R_b$). The value of BLRR increases with increasing k, which means reducing $R_b$ is more effective when k is high. The reduction of borehole length with change of $R_b$ is easily estimated with BLRR. The validity of BLRR is also examined with EED analysis.
Effect of CaO addition on age hardening response has been studied by using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and differential thermal analysis in AZ91 and CaO-containing ECO-AZ91 alloys. After solution treatment, the ${\beta}$($Mg_{17}Al_{12}$) phase formed during solidification mostly disappeared in the microstructure in the AZ91 alloy, whereas numerous ${\beta}$ precipitates containing Ca were still observed in the ECO-AZ91 alloy due to its enhanced thermal stability. The ECO-AZ91 alloy showed the delayed peak aging time and higher peak hardness compared with those of the AZ91 alloy. The activation energies for ${\beta}$ precipitation calculated by means of Kissinger method increased from 71.4 to 85.6 kJ/mole by the addition of CaO, which implies that CaO plays a role in reducing ${\beta}$ precipitation rate in the AZ91 alloy.

Silicone tetrachloride (SiCl4) leak accidents cause enormous human and environmental damage because it is highly toxic. Some handling facilities use water curtains to reduce the impact range of SiCl4. Although the water curtain is known as one of the most efficient technologies for post-release mitigation, its effect on reducing SiCl4 concentration needs to be investigated scientifically and quantitatively. In this study, three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to investigate the physical and chemical effects of water curtains as a release-mitigation system for SiCl4. SiCl4 is released and dispersed five seconds prior to the operation of the water curtain. Once the water curtain works, the SiCl4 reacts chemically with the water and its concentration decreases rapidly; it reaches an emergency response planning guidelines level 2 (ERPG-2) of 5 parts per million (ppm) at about 570 m. We observed, however, that the physical effect of water curtains on reducing SiCl4 concentration is insignificant when the chemical effect is eliminated. These results are crucial since they can be a scientific and quantitative basis for the 'technical guidelines for estimating the accident affected range'. In order to protect the public from chemical accidents, more toxic gas mitigation technologies need to be developed.
RC buildings constitute the prevailing type of construction in earthquake-prone region like Kathmandu Valley. Most of these building constructions were based on conventional methods. In this context, the present paper studied the seismic behaviour of existing RC buildings in Kathmandu Valley. For this, four representative building structures with different design and construction, namely a building: (a) representing the non-engineered construction (RC1 and RC2) and (b) engineered construction (RC3 and RC4) has been selected for analysis. The dynamic properties of the case study building models are analyzed and the corresponding interaction with seismic action is studied by means of non-linear analyses. The structural response measures such as capacity curve, inter-storey drift and the effect of geometric non-linearities are evaluated for the two orthogonal directions. The effect of plan and vertical irregularity on the performance of the structures was studied by comparing the results of two engineered buildings. This was achieved through non-linear dynamic analysis with a synthetic earthquake subjected to X, Y and $45^{\circ}$ loading directions. The nature of the capacity curve represents the strong impact of the P-delta effect, leading to a reduction of the global lateral stiffness and reducing the strength of the structure. The non-engineered structures experience inter-storey drift demands higher than the engineered building models. Moreover, these buildings have very low lateral resistant, lesser the stiffness and limited ductility. Finally, a seismic safety assessment is performed based on the proposed drift limits. Result indicates that most of the existing buildings in Nepal exhibit inadequate seismic performance.
This paper investigates the mechanical response of simply supported one-way reinforced concrete slabs under fire through numerical analysis. The numerical model is constructed using the software ABAQUS, and verified by experimental results. Generally, mechanical response of the slab can be divided into four stages, accompanied with drastic stress redistribution. In the first stage, the bottom of the slab is under tension and the top is under compression. In the second stage, stress at bottom of the slab becomes compression due to thermal expansion, with the tension zone at the mid-span section moving up along the thickness of the slab. In the third stage, compression stress at bottom of the slab starts to decrease with the deflection of the slab increasing significantly. In the fourth stage, the bottom of the slab is under tension again, eventually leading to cracking of the slab. Parametric studies were further performed to investigate the effects of load ratio, thickness of protective layer, width-span ratio and slab thickness on the performance of the slab. Results show that increasing the thickness of the slab or reducing the load ratio can significantly postpone the time that deflection of the slab reaches span/20 under fire. It is also worth noting that slabs with the span ratio of 1:1 reached a deflection of span/20 22 min less than those of 1:3. The thickness of protective layer has little effect on performance of the slab until it reaches a deflection of span/20, but its effect becomes obvious in the late stages of fire.
Liver colonization is initiated through the interplay between tumor cells and adhesion molecules present in liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs). This crosstalk stimulates tumor COX-2 upregulation and PGE2 secretion. To elucidate the role of the LSEC intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) in the prometastatic response exerted by tumor and stromal COX-2, we utilized celecoxib (CLX) as a COX-2 inhibitory agent. We analyzed the in vitro proliferative and secretory responses of murine C26 colorectal cancer (CRC) cells to soluble ICAM-1 (sICAM-1), cultured alone or with LSECs, and their effect on LSEC and hepatic stellate cell (HSC) migration and in vivo liver metastasis. CLX reduced sICAM-1-stimulated COX-2 activation and PGE2 secretion in C26 cells cultured alone or cocultured with LSECs. Moreover, CLX abrogated sICAM-1-induced C26 cell proliferation and C26 secretion of promigratory factors for LSECs and HSCs. Interestingly, CLX reduced the protumoral response of HSC, reducing their migratory potential when stimulated with C26 secretomes and impairing their secretion of chemotactic factors for LSECs and C26 cells and proliferative factors for C26 cells. In vivo, CLX abrogated the prometastatic ability of sICAM-1-activated C26 cells while reducing liver metastasis. COX-2 inhibition blocked the creation of a favorable tumor microenvironment (TME) by hindering the intratumoral recruitment of activated HSCs and macrophages in addition to the accumulation of fibrillar collagen. These results point to COX-2 being a key modulator of processes initiated by host ICAM-1 during tumor cell/LSEC/HSC crosstalk, leading to the creation of a prometastatic TME in the liver.

Disk radial runout creates a periodic relative motion between the laser beam spot and tracks formed on an optical disk. While only focus control is activated, the periodic relative motion yields sinusoid-like waves in the tracking error signal, where one cycle of the sinusoid-like waves corresponds to one track. The frequency of the sinusoid-like waves varies depending on the disk rotational speed and the amount of the disk radial runout. If the frequency of the tracking error signal in the off-track state is too high due to large radial runout of the disk, it is not a simple matter to begin track-following control stably. It might take a long time to reach a steady state or tracking control might fail to reach a stable steady state in the worst case. This article proposes a simple method for reducing the relative motion caused by the disk radial runout in the off-track state. The relative motion in the off-track state is effectively reduced by a drive input obtained through measurements of the tracking error signal and simple calculations based on the measurements, which helps reduce the transient response time of the track-following control. The validity of the proposed method is verified through an experiment using an optical disk drive.
