  • In this study, an efficient damage index is proposed to identify multiple damage cases in structural systems using the concepts of frequency response function (FRF) matrix and strain energy of a structure. The index is defined based on the change of strain energy of an element due to damage. For obtaining the strain energy stored in elements, the columnar coefficients of the FRF matrix is used. The new indicator is named here as frequency response function strain energy based index (FRFSEBI). In order to assess the performance of the proposed index for structural damage detection, some benchmark structures having a number of damage scenarios are considered. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed index even with considering noise can accurately identify the actual location and approximate severity of the damage. In order to demonstrate the high efficiency of the proposed damage index, its performance is also compared with that of the flexibility strain energy based index (FSEBI) provided in the literature.

  • In this paper, the vibration of high speed trains and the irregularity of railway are examined using a wavelet-based frequency response function. To investigate their characteristics, non-stationary acceleration data are acquired and processed using the wavelet transform. Also, the railway irregularity is examined by acquiring the data from the on-board laser-based measurement system. The correlation between the train vibration and the railway irregularity has been investigated. From the analysis, the wavelet-based frequency response function is a promised method for the dynamic characteristics of high speed trains.

  • Dynamic loads may arise from rotating parte of pump if they are insufficiently balanced. The magnitude of pump induced vibrations varies according to the weight, eccentricity, and unbalanced mass of pump. This is a study to estimate the pump induced vibration in time and frequency domain by transfer function. The transfer function has real and imaginary information of signals, and response function has also real and imaginary information. So the vibration force can be obtained from the response and transfer function by complex calculation. The amplitudes and components of 50Hp pump vibration force are suggested.

  • A general approximate optimization technique by sequential design domain(SDD) did not save response values for getting an approximate function in each step. It has a disadvantage at aspect of an expense. In this paper, previous response values are recycled for constructing an approximate function. For this reason, approximation function is more accurate. Accordingly, even if we did not determine move limit, a system is converged to the optimal design. Size and shape optimization using approximate optimization technique is carried out with SDD. Algorithm executing Pro/Engineer and ANSYS are automatically adopted in the approximate optimization program by SDD. Convergence criterion is defined such that optimal point must be located within SDD during the three steps. The PLBA(Pshenichny-Lim-Belegundu-Arora) algorithm is used to solve approximate optimization problems. This algorithm uses the second-order information in the direction finding problem and uses the active set strategy.

  • This paper investigates the prediction of the dynamic strain response using acceleration response only. Two methods are proposed for the strain prediction; one is based on beam theory and the other is calculated by the frequency response function between acceleration and strain. First, it is estimated the dynamics of the simple notched beam, including the non-linearity, through the uni-axial vibration testing. Then, the dynamic strain response is predicted under two different methods using acceleration response. The validation of proposed methods is conducted by the comparison between measured strain and predicted values. The comparison reveals that the proposed method based on the FRF between acceleration and strain is more reliable one than that stemmed from beam theory and the maximum relative error is less than 8 %.

  • Recently, due to the increasing attention to the structural safety under uncertain environments, many researches on the structural reliability analysis have been peformed. Some useful methods are available to evaluate performance reliability of structures with explicit limit states. However, for large structures, in which structural behaviors can be analyzed with finite element models and the limit states are only expressed implicitly, Monte-Carlo simulation method has been mainly used. However, Monte-Carlo simulation method spends too much computational time on repetitive structural analysis. Many alternative methods are suggested to reduce the computational work required in Monte-Carlo simulation. Response surface method is widely used to improve the efficiency of structural reliability analysis. Response surface method is based on the concept of approximating simple polynomial function of basic random variables for the limit state which is not easily expressed in explicit forms of design random variables. The response surface method has simple algorithm. However, the accuracy of results highly depends on how properly the stochastic characteristics of the original limit state has been represented by approximated function, In this study, an improved response surface method is proposed in which the sampling points for creating response surface are modified to represent the failure surface more adequately and the combined use of a linear response surface function and Rackwitz-Fiessler method has been employed. The method is found to be more effective and efficient than previous response surface methods. In addition more consistent convergence is achieved, Accuracy of the proposed method has been investigated through example.

  • The reactionary responses to control human standing dynamics were estimated under the assumption that postural complexity mainly occurs in the mid-sagittal plane. During the experiment, the subject was exposed to continuous horizontal perturbation. The ankle and hip joint rotations of the subject mainly contributed to maintaining standing postural control. The designed mobile platform generated anterior/posterior (AP) motion. Non-predictive random translation was used as input for the system. The mean acceleration generated by the platform was measured as $0.44m/s^2$. The measured data were analyzed in the frequency domain by the coherence function and the frequency response function to estimate its dynamic responses. The significant correlation found between the input and output of the postural control system. The frequency response function revealed prominent resonant peaks within its frequency spectrum and magnitude. Subjects behaved as a non-rigid two link inverted pendulum. The analyzed data are consistent with the outcome hypothesized for this study.

  • The frequency response function(FRF) of each substructure is used for the transfer function synthesis method(TFS). The dynamic characteristics of the full system are obtained by synthesizing FRFs of each substructure. The validation of TFS depends on accuracy for FRF of each substructure. Impact hammer testing Is widely used to obtain the modal characteristics of structures However. the FRF obtained from impact hammer testing contains bias errors, such as finite record length error and leakage error of which characteristic depends on data acquisition time which we call record length. In this paper, a method to remove hose errors is proposed so as to enhance results of TFS. Numerical and experimental examples show that the FRF of full structure can be predicted nearly exactly by the method proposed in this paper.

  • The spectrum of impulse response signal from an impulse hammer testing is widely used to obtain frequency response function(FRF) of the structure. However the FRFs obtained from impact hammer testing have not only leakage errors but also finite record length errors when the record length for the signal processing is not sufficiently long. The errors cannot be removed with the conventional signal analyzer which treats the signals as if they are always steady and periodic. Since the response signals generated by the impact hammer are transient and have damping, they are undoubtedly non-periodic. It is inevitable that the signals be acquired for limited recording time, which causes the finite record length error and the leakage error. In this paper, the errors in the frequency response function of multi degree of freedom system are formulated theoretically. And the method to remove these errors is also suggested. This method is based on the optimization technique. A numerical example of 3-dof model shows the validity of the proposed method.
