Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) have been shown to cause nervous system disorders through skin contact or respiration, and also cause foul odors even at low densities in most cases. Also, as a compound itself, VOCs are directly harmful to the environment and to the human body, and may participate in photochemical reactions in air to create secondary pollutants. In this study, HL-60 cells were treated with volatile organic compounds, including ethylbenzene and trichloroethylene, at a value of $IC_50$. Then, the in house-prepared Human HazChem arrayer was utilized in order to compare the gene expression between the two VOCs. After hybridization, 8 upregulated genes and 8 downregulated genes were discovered in the HazChem array. The upregulated genes were identified as SG15, TNFSF10, PRNP, ME1, NCOA4, SRXN1, TXNRD1, and XBP1. The downregulated genes were identified as MME, NRF1, PRARBP, CALCA, CRP, BAX, C7 or f40, and FGFR1. Such results were highly correlated with the quantitative RT-PCR results. The majority of the 16 genes were related with the characteristics of VOCs, including respiratory mechanism, apoptosis, and carcinogenesis-associated genes. Our data showed that our human HazChem array can be used to monitor hazardous materials via gene expression profiling.

Background: Birth asphyxia is a leading cause of neonatal mortality. Ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels may have a predictive role in the identification and prevention of hypoxic disorders, as they increase in cases of ischemia of the liver, heart, brain, bowel, and kidney. Purpose: This study aimed to assess the value of IMA levels as a diagnostic marker for neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Methods: Sixty newborns who fulfilled 3 or more of the clinical and biochemical criteria and developed HIE as defined by Levene staging were included in our study as the asphyxia group. Neonates with congenital malformation, systemic infection, intrauterine growth retardation, low-birth weight, cardiac or hemolytic disease, family history of neurological diseases, congenital or perinatal infections, preeclampsia, diabetes, and renal diseases were excluded from the study. Sixty healthy neonates matched for gestational age and with no maternal history of illness, established respiration at birth, and an Apgar score ≥7 at 1 and 5 minutes were included as the control group. IMA was determined by double-antibody enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of a cord blood sample collected within 30 minutes after birth. Results: Cord blood IMA levels were higher in asphyxiated newborns than in controls (250.83±36.07 pmol/mL vs. 120.24±38.9 pmol/mL). Comparison of IMA levels by HIE stage revealed a highly significant difference among them (207.3±26.65, 259.28±11.68, 294.99±4.41 pmol/mL for mild, moderate, and severe, respectively). At a cutoff of 197.6 pmol/mL, the sensitivity was 84.5%, specificity was 86%, positive predictive value was 82.8%, negative predictive value was 88.3%, and area under the curve was 0.963 (P<0.001). Conclusion: IMA levels can be a reliable marker for the early diagnosis of neonatal HIE and can be a predictor of injury severity.
We were trying to study the validity of Puffer fish's poison(Tetrodotoxin- TTX) to make a traditional Korean Medical treatment. The following conclusions were made after literary studies. 1. The first record of the puffer fish dates back 2000 years ago in the Chinese text Book of Mountain and Sea and other texts from the similar period. 2. Puffer fish's poison IS known as tetrodotoxin which is an amino perhydroquinazoline compound. It has a chemical formula of $C_{11}H_{17}N_3O_8$ in the hemiacetal structure and has the molecular weight of 319. 3. Tetrodotoxin (TTX) plays a role as potent neurotransmitter blocker by blocking the $Na^+$ -gate channel which hinders the influx of $Na^+$ ion into the cell. 4. Symptoms of the puffer fish poisoning ranges from blunted sense in the lips and tongue, occasional vomiting in the first degree to sudden descending of the blood pressure, apnea, and other critical conditions in the fourth degree. Intoxication of the puffer fish poison progresses at a rapid pace as death may occur after an hour and half up to eight hours in maximum. Typical death occurs after four to six hours. 5. Ways to treat the puffer fish poisoning include gastric irrigation, induce vomiting, purgation, intravenous fluid injection, and correcting electrolytic imbalance and acidosis. In cases of dyspnea, apply oxygen inhalation and conduct artificial respiration. 6. Tetrodotoxin (TTX) may be applied in treating brain disorders, ocular pain, excess pain in the large intestine and ileum, and relieving tension of the skeletal museles, neuralgia, rheumatism, arthritis, and etc. 7. In terms of Oriental medicine, the puffer fish poison has characteristics of sweet, warm, and poisonous. It's known efficacies are to tonify weakness, dispel damp, benefit the lower back, relieve hemorrhoid, kills parasites, remove edema, and so forth. And the puffer fish eggs processed with ginger are said to be effective against tuberculosis and lung cancer, thus, it's validity must be investigated and further research should be followed.

In this paper, by using the cattle feed intake, rumination, and in heat monitoring technology, RFI (Residual Feed Intake) monitoring and wearable devices and PCs for predicting abnormalities in budding target web and smart A monitoring system using a phone application was designed and implemented. With the development of this system, the farmer is expected to increase economic efficiency. By analyzing the feed intake, it is possible to identify the difference between the recommended feed amount based on the cow's weight and the feed amount consumed by the cow, and it is expected that early detection of metabolic disorders (abnormality of metabolism) is possible. Farmers using the results of this thesis can distinguish the cows with the most efficient performance, and the 6-axis motion sensor signals input from the wearable device attached to the cow's skin (neck) and the microphone attached to the wearable device. It is possible to measure the cow's rumination and feed intake through the sound of the cow's throat. In the future, improvements will be made to measure additional vital signs such as heart rate and respiration.
We evaluated the changes of fruit quality factors and the incidence of physiological disorders during the periods of high temperature environment in 'Wonhwang' and 'Whasan' pears to determine appropriate harvest time for exportation. In 'Wonhwang' pears, the fruits harvested at 130 days after full bloom (DAFB) showed 31.3 and 17.6N of flesh firmness after 5 and 10 days after simulated marketing at $30^{\circ}C$, respectively, while those of the fruits harvested at 135 DAFB lowered to 16.7 or 6.9N, respectively. Whereas, 'Whasan' pear showed higher firmness during 14 days of high marketing condition than 'Wonhwang' pears which represented 30.4, 26.5 and 21.6N in the fruits harvested 145, 150 and 155 DAFB, respectively. Higher soluble solid contents and lower acidity values observed in the late harvested fruits in both cultivar along with increased marketing period at $30^{\circ}C$. Late harvested 'Wonhwang' pears showed higher respiration rate and ethylene production than early harvested ones, while those of 'Whasan' pears showed lower values regardless of fruit maturity which represented less than 50% of 'Wonhwang' pears. The incidence of physiological disorders such as internal browning, water soaking, flesh spot decay, core breakdown and pithiness appeared more severely in the fruits of 'Wonhwang' in accordance with the progress of high temperature marketing and fruit maturity. Whereas, those symptoms were occurred only after 14 days of prolonged marketing time in 'Whasan' pears. Consequently, it was needed to pay more attention to determine the ripeness when the fruits exported to the country with high temperature environment, especially in the fruits of 'Wonhwang' pears showing rapid quality loss and severe physiological disorders.
We investigated the effect of postharvest treatments of calcium chloride, lysophosphatidyl ethanolamine (LPE) or 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on fruit quality during simulated marketing in Asian pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai). 'Whangkeumbae' pear fruits were immersed in 0.25, 0.5 or 1.0% $CaCl_2$ solution with or without ultrasound (40kHz) at $25^{\circ}C$ for 3min followed by storage at $1^{\circ}C$ for 30 days simulated as abroad exportation. After simulated marketing at $25^{\circ}C$ and 80% relative humidity (RH) up for 10 days, quality parameters were evaluated. Results indicated that the ultrasound and $CaCl_2$ treatment had a synergic effect on keeping the green skin color which showed lower $a^*$ value. The combination treatment of ultrasound and 0.5% and 1.0% $CaCl_2$ significantly reduced internal browning disorders, although severe skin blemish disorder (20-23%) occurred in 1.0% $CaCl_2$ treatment. 'Wonhwang' pears were immersed in 1,000ppm LPE for 3 minutes or were fumigated in 1,000 ppb 1-MCP for 12 hours, respectively. The results of the fruit quality survey during the 21 days of distribution period are as follows. The 1-MCP treatment was maintained at a constant flesh firmness of 33N or higher during the distribution period. The LPE treated fruits had a lower physiological disorder index than the untreated group, but showed a relatively higher value than the 1-MCP treated group. In the case of 1-MCP treatment, the fruit respiration rate was significantly lower than of untreated control ($6.0mL{\cdot}kg^{-1}{\cdot}hr^{-1}$) during the simulaed marketing period. Consequently, it was expected that the postharvest treatments of 0.5% calcium chloride in pararell with ultrasound and 1-MCP fumigation can help to maintain Asian pear quality during distribution period.
This study analyzed the emergency activity daily reports and emergency instruction sheets of the research subjects and proceeded with the shockable cardiac arrest cases transported to 119 emergency units for two years before the hospital from January 1, 2010 through December 31, 2011. The most frequently predicted instruction by the dispatchers at the 119 Emergency Situation Control Center was 74 cases of fainting (33.3%). Among varied types of predicted instructions, 112 cases (50.5%) like fainting, chest pain, general prostration and others were not able to be predicted while predictable instructions involved with cardiac arrest such as consciousness disorders, difficult breathing, cardiac attacks and convulsion were 110 cases (49.5%). In such cases, success rates of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) trials by eyewitnesses at predictable instructions involved with cardiac arrests were significantly higher. As mentioned, situation agents must categorize types of cardiac arrests accurately by posing questions over assessments regarding patients' consciousness and respiration in detail. The patients categorized by such methods must guide eyewitnesses to be able to do CPR. Moreover, not only emergency medical technicians who receive predictable instructions involved with cardiac arrests given by dispatchers (49.5%) but also filed emergency medical technicians who are not able to reach a precise conclusion to non-cardiac arrests on unpredictable instructions on cardiac arrests (50.5%) must prepare for situations related to cardiac arrests before being dispatched to the field.
With the aim of developing and indoor overwintering technique for Pearl oyster, Pinctada fucata martensii, the metabolic rates of young oysters (52.4-83.0 mm in shell length) were measured for 2 weeks at water temperatures of 8, 10, 12, and $14^{\circ}C$. The filtration rate (FR) ranged 0 to $4.84\;L\;h^{-1}gDW^{-1}$ (mean, $0.02{\pm}0.06 $ to $3.12{\pm}1.45$), with significant changes observed over thme except for the case of a water temperature of $14^{\circ}C$. Respiration rate (R) ranged from 0 to $2.370\;mgO2\;h^{-1}gDW^{-1}$ (mean, 0 to $1.77{\pm}0.37$), with significant respiratory disorders observed at temperatures below $12^{\circ}C$; in contrast, the rate increased on the $14^th$ day of the experiment in the case of a temperature of 14$^{\circ}C$. No significant difference was observed among the different water temperatures in terms of excretion rate (E) or absorption efficiency (Abs.eff), except for a significant decrease in aerobic metabolism in the case of water temperature of $8^{\circ}C$. The estimated scope for growth (SFG) ranged from -9.1 to $126.9\;J\;h^{-1}gDW^{-1}$ (mean. $-4.1{\pm}2.6$ to $82.85{\pm}42.6$). A significant energy Joss was found at $8^{\circ}C$, with negative SFG observed throughout the experiment and a gradual energy decrease observed over time at water temperatures of $10^{\circ}C$ and 120C. However. SFG remained positive throughout the experiment in the case of $14^{\circ}C$. The estimated minimum energy requirement, assessed from energy expenditure, is $8.00-34.24\;J\;h^{-1}gDW^{-1}$ (mean, $17.67{\pm}6.17$). In conclusion, the lowest temperature suitable for indoor overwintering is above $14^{\circ}C$.
'Akihime' plums picked at mature stage (50-70% red coloration of the fruit skin) were stored at $1^{\circ}C$ under air or controlled atmosphere (CA) storage regime as following 3% $O_2$ + 1, 3, 5, and 7% $CO_2$ for 50 days for the purpose of assessing the effect of CA storage on the maintenance of fruit quality and the reduction of chilling injury. Fruits stored under CA storage regime showed reduced respiration as well as ethylene production rates compared to the fruits stored in air. Quality attributes including weight loss, Hunter 'a' values, soluble solids content, titratable acidity, and firmness showed smallest changes in fruits stored under CA conditions except for 3% $O_2$ + 7% $CO_2$. High incidence of physiological disorders including chilling injury, flesh browning, and decay were found in fruits stored under both air and CA of 3% $O_2$ + 7% $CO_2$. In our study, the CA storage regime of 3% $O_2$ + 5% $CO_2$ was found the most effective for maintaining overall fruit qualities of 'Akihime' plums produced in Korea, also delayed the development of chilling injury including lack of juiciness and flesh browning. From the results, storage at 3% $O_2$ + 5% $CO_2$ was selected as an optimal condition of 'Akihime' plum for extending storage life up to 50 days at $1^{\circ}C$.
'Angelica' is one of the most traditionally consumed medicinal herbs around Northeast Asia including Korea for treatments of various diseases or health care purposes like hematopoiesis, blood circulation for women, sedative, analgesic, and a tonic medicine etc. Angelica gigas Nakai, a Korean native species of Angelica, is clearly different from the others in containing a high concentration of active ingredients like pyranocoumarines including decursin, decursinol, and decursinol angelate. These compounds have various kinds of positive effects such as anti-tumor activity including the precaution of neutropenia occurred during anticancer drug administration, improvements of metabolic disorders, menstrual irregularity, impairment of renal function, respiration improvement, cognition-enhancement, anti-inflammatory effect, anti-oxidative effect, enhancing fertility and so forth. Thus it implies incredible potentialities in future development for foods and drugs. However, certain purity-related qualities and/or overdose in food products can cause side effects like toxicities; therefore, their safety profiles should also be considered. This review focuses on the positive and negative effects of three pyranocoumarines in Angelica gigas Nakai and some possibilities and considerations for future food and drug products development.
