  • This study was aimed at applying the IUCN category system to the Baekdudaegan Protected Area. A classification key was developed to apply the system to the overlapped designated protected areas inside of Baekdudaegan Protected Area. Korea national parks and forests managers' and experts' opinions were collected and they all agreed to the use of multiple classification in Baekdudaegan Protected Area. For example, the type of natural forests among the Forest Genetic Resources Reserves was classified to be IUCN Category Ia while other types of Forest Genetic Resources Reserve was classified to be Category IV. And the Protected Forest Landscape was classified to be Category V while the other types of protected forests were classified to be Category VI. The study suggests the need of classification of forest protected areas including Baekdudaegan Protected Area using IUCN system accompanying with protected areas management effectiveness evaluation.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop a System Dynamics model for estimating the volume of forest resources in the future and simulating the volume of function of public benefit linked to forest resources in dynamic manner. Also it is to analyze the impact when the volume of forest land conversion is controlled by policy using the SD model. The analysis was done at nation-wide for the simulation period 2000 to 2040. Estimated forest area was 6.2 million ha and estimated growing stock was $4.7\;billion\;m^3$ in 2040 from the future forecast without policies. Changing of forest resources, 13.9 billion tons of forest-ground-water storage was estimated, $1.8\;million\;m^3$ of erosion control of forest was estimated and 377 million tons of $CO_2$ absorption was estimated. As a result of simulation with two alternatives, forest area was less reduced and growing stock was bigger than do nothing policy. Also, function of public benefit reflected by changes of forest resources was enhanced. This study contributes to estimate the quantitatively measured volume of forest resources and function of public benefit over the 30 years in Korean forest land in scientific way. Using this SD model, decision maker would develop forest land policies more delicately for deserving forest resources and increasing the volume of function of public.

  • Most of the landslides triggered by intensive rainfall on natural slope occur serious damages of human beings and properties. There have been many landslides since 1991 in Gyeonggi province. The influential factors are rainfall, topography, geology and soil properties. There were 660 landslides occurred by intensive rainfall as much as 250mm at Yongin and Anseong area from Tuly 19th to luly 21st,1991 This study surveyed location, topography, geology, geometry of the landslide and rainfall at the area and analyzed occurrence characteristics of the landslides. Most of the landslides occurred on the soil layer above the bed rock. They showed changes of landslide types from translational slides at the head part to flow at the central part. The landslides have relatively small magnitude of which length is shorter than 50m. In order to identify characteristics of landslides dependent on soil conditions, geotechnical properties of soil were evaluated by laboratory tests using soil samples which were collected on slided area and not-slided area. Soil properties of the slided area show high percentage of coarse material such as gravel and sand. However, soil of the not-slided area is mainly composed of fine material such as silt and clay. Permeability coefficients of the slided area are higher than those of the not-slided area.

  • The effectiveness of fishery resources enhancement of artificial reef settled in the coast of Cheju Island was determined by using the samples collected by scuaba and caught by the trammel net. The obtained results are summarized as follows; 1. Six types of shellfish were found in the artificial reef area, and the amount of shellfish living in that area was $490{\sim}3,483g/m^2$ according to our research. This shows a high density of shellfish in that area. 2. Ten types of seaweeds were found in the artificial reef area, and the reef living in that area was abundant, with $3,556{\sim}10,550g/m^2$. 3. The amount of a catch of fish in the artificial reef area was 3.5~21.4 times more than in the control area. This result shows the high productivity in that area.

  • This study was conducted to clarify the characteristics of bird community and habitat types in Mangyeong River area from Aug. 1999 to Jun. 2000. Paddy field was the most dominant land use type. Water area, mudflat, shrub field, urban area and green house were also dominant land use types in study area. Eighty-eight bird species were recorded during study period. Maximum number of species and individuals were shown as 58 species and 7,084 individuals in Oct. and Jan., respectively. There were low number of diving ducks and clumped pattern of waterfowl distribution of bird community in Mangyeong River area. Dabbling ducks distributed at upper reaches near Samrye Bridge, and plovers and sandpipers at lower reaches near estuary. Those results suggest that creation of pools over one meter water-depth and restoration of paddy field into riparian zone with diverse shrubs are required to increase the bird diversity in the Mangyeong rived.

  • This study was conducted in order to analyze a flooded area by the overflow of a stream using hydrological and hydraulic models and to estimate the utility of the SAR satellite image by comparing a protected lowland inundation area with a past inundation area map. The research area selected for this study is Sapkyocheon, which was flooded in August 1999. The flood stage was analyzed to select an inundation area by applying flood events in August 1999. By importing analyzed flood stage data into TIN data of WMS, the inundation area of a protected lowland was selected and then compared with an flood hazard map of WAMIS. An inundation area is selected by the SAR satellite image in comparing the image of August 4, 1999 (inundation time) with the image of September 8, 2002 (after inundation). The method of selecting an inundation area with the hydraulic model of HEC-RAS can be used to select an inundation area of external overflow, but it has the limit of selecting an inundation area concerning the internal drainage. The method of using the SAR satellite image can complement the limit of an inundation area of an internal drainage but accuracy of inundation area depends on using SAR satellite image acquired at time of maximum depth.

  • In boreal conifers in China's Northeast area, maximum latewood density (MXD) of tree-ring varies in response to growing season temperature. Forest net productivity can be estimated using the Normalized-difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) calculated from satellite sensor data. MXD from the Mohe site in this area was compared with estimates of NPP for 1982-1999 produced by the NDVI model, which was established based on the relationship of leaf area index (LAI) and NDVI. The result shows that the MXD series correlated significantly with the NDVI model estimates series, suggesting that MXD appeared to be an appropriate index for productivity or canopy growth in region where forest productivity is strongly temperature-related.
