  • We introduce a scheme with a maximized efficiency of detecting atoms passing through an optical standing-wave mode cavity. Consider a standing-wave optical cavity illuminated by a weak probe beam through one of its mirrors where the transmission through the other mirror is monitored by a photodetector. If an atom is put in the cavity, the atom-cavity coupling shifts the resonance frequency of the system via the so-called normal mode splitting, and thereby the transmission power will drop. In fact, this type of atom detection scheme has been used in recent single atom trap experiments In practice, however, the field in a standing-wave mode will have a geometrical structure having nodes and antinodes that when the atom traverses the cavity through one of the nodes, there will be no such effect of atom-field interaction. • We propose a reflector-type perfect absorber with double absorption lines using electric and magnetic dipoles of Mie resonances in an array of silicon nanospheres on a silver substrate. In the visible range, hundreds of nanometer-sized nanospheres show strong absorption lines up to 99%, which are enhanced by the interference between Mie scattering and reflections from the silver substrate. The air gap distance between the silicon particles and silver substrate controls this interference, and the absorption wavelengths can be controlled by adjusting the diameter of the silicon particles over the entire range of visible wavelengths. Additionally, our structure has a filling factor of 0.322 when the absorbance is nearly 100%.

  • Power transformers, air-intakes, stacks in a combined thermal power plant are the main noise sources. Power transformer noise among them has being get a target of public complaint due to 480Hz component of its pure tone. The source is mainly magnetostrictive vibration of the transformer core. The first countermeasures was installing sound barrier on the front of transformer. However, 500Hz, center of the frequency is not reduced. This paper includes the measurements of noise level at the near resident apartment, the identification of noise transfer and the countermeasures for noise sources. Cavity resonance type of noise reduction devices was installed on enclosuring wall of transformers. As a result, the noise level from transformer is reduced about 3dB.

  • A linear ultrasonic motor was designed by a combination of the longitudinal and bending mode. linear ultrasonic motors are based on an elliptical motion on the surface of elastic body, such as bar or plates. The corresponding eigen-mode of one resonance frequency can be excited twice at the same time with a phase shift of 90 degrees in space and time. That is excite symmetric and anti-symmetric modes. Then it determines the thrust and speed of the motor. Linear ultrasonic motors are investigated experimentally in according to be fabricated a general classification to motor structure and material characteristic. There was the first to simulate as use of finite element analysis ANSYS 9.0. The AL-T2W8-ARM14-LEG18-ANGLE80 motor has a maxim efficiency 18 % under the speed 0.14 m/s, thrust 345 gf and preload 280 gf, operating frequency is 57.6 kHz.

  • The authors report three microcystic meningiomas with its characteristic immunohistochemical findings and chromosomal pattern. Three patients with surgically treated microcystic meningioma were studied for its radiological, histopathological findings, and chromosomal analysis was done in the one patient. Tumors were convexity meningioma in the frontal area. The tumors were enhanced homogenously in the two, and enhanced in homogenously with multiple small cysts in the other one on preoperative magenetic resonance image. Pathological examination showed marked nuclear pleomorphism, many small cysts, hyaline thickening in blood vessel wall, and mucinous background, compatable to microcystic type. EMA and vimentin were positive on the immunohistochemical stain. Chromosomal analysis showed tetrasomies of chromosome 5, 13, 17, and 20, and trisomies of chromosome 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 16, 19, and 21, which are quite different from those of benign meningioma.

  • A 20-month-old boy presented with a intraparenchymal mass in the right frontoparietal area manifesting as complex partial seizure, secondary generalization and left hemiparesis. Magnetic resonance images (MRI) of the brain showed inhomogeneously enhancing mass in the right frontoparietal area which has irregular margin and perilesional edema. Based on the radiological findings, a preoperative diagnosis was an intraaxial tumor, such as pilocytic astrocytoma or dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor. The patient underwent a surgery including frontal craniotomy. The tumor had a partially extreme adherence to the surrounding brain tissue but it showed no dural attachment. Gross-total resection of the tumor was achieved. Postoperative follow-up computed tomography scans showed no residual tumor. The pathological findings confirmed the tumor as a WHO grade I meningioma, transitional type. Nine months after the surgery, follow-up brain MRI showed no recurrence of the tumor, porencephaly in site where the tumor was resected; the patient's symptoms had fully recovered. We report the case of a meningioma in a 20-month-old boy.

  • A 59-year-old female presented with headache and dizziness for one year. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a $52{\times}28$ mm, wellcircumscribed, homogenously enhancing mass lesion without dural attachment located in the left lateral cerebellomedullary cistern. The tumor was excised, and a histological diagnosis was a mixed pattern meningioma of meningothelial and fibroblastic type. A meningioma in the posterior fossa without dural attachment is quite rare. We report a rare case of lateral cerebellomedullary cistern meningioma without dural attachment with literature review.

  • The routine interictal electroencephalogram(EEG) continues to play an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy. The clinical investigation of brain disease in the last decade has been marked by dramatic advances in functional imaging, magnetic resonance scanning and digitized EEG. Epilepsy is a disorder of electrical hyperirritability of cerebral cortex and the interictal EEG remains the most convenient means available to demonstrate cortical hyperirritability. The sensitivity and specificity of the EEG in the diagnosis of epilepsy have been disputed. In this review, the type of EEG findings in epilepsy are reviewed and the sensitivity and specificity of interictal epileptiform discharge are discussed. And also the role of EEG in various clinical situations are summarized.

  • This paper reports the fluid flow and heat transfer around a module cooled by forced air flow generated by a piezoelectric(PZT) cooling fan. A flexible PZT fan with distortion in a fluid transport system of comparatively simple structure which was mounted on a PCB in a parallel-plate channel($450{\times}80{\times}700mm^3$) accelerates surrounding fluid locally. Input voltages of 20-100V and a resonance frequency of 23Hz were used to vibrate the cooling fan. Input power to the module was 4W. The cooling effect using a PZT fan was larger than that of free convection. Fluid flow around the module were visualized by using PIV system. The temperature distribution around heated module were visualized by using liquid crystal film(LCF). We found that the flow type was y-shaped and the cooling effect was increased by the wake generated by a piezoelectric cooling fan.
