Resistivity Image Profiling has been applied to a geological survey in the Keoje-do area. Survey lines are located near the KD-02 and KD-06 wells in the area, where we have already sampled all rock cores and carried out several kinds of geophysical logs. In each site a resistivity cross-section is obtained by inverting pole-pole apparent resistivities. Comparing the reconstructed resistivity section with the rock cores and logging data obtained in the well provides a detailed picture of subsurface geology. The geology of KD-02 site is composed of conglomerate, sandstone and shale with fractures. The reconstructed resistivity image is useful for assessing the grade of weathering of these rocks. The KD-06 site is mainly underlain by granitic rocks, and its fresh basement can be delineated by resistivities over $1000{\Omega}{\cdot}m$.
Three-dimensional (3D) resistivity method is an effective tool in the engineering site survey because it can provide a 3D resistivity distribution of the site. In this study, we tried to find out faults, fractures and coal seams that can cause the collapse of the tunnel. We carried out 2D resistivity survey along 5 parallel lines and 11 cross lines and merged all the apparent resistivity data for 3D inversion. Finally, from the 3D resistivity image and drilling data we presented the 3D distribution of faults, fractures and coal seams that are considered the main cause of the tunnel collapse.

Recently, urban retrofit and extension, development of new buildings and facilities, and construction of underground structures like subway tunnels in urban areas give rise to significance of site investigation at urban areas. However, ambient electric noises, traffic vibrations, embedded objects work as obstacles to high-quality and accuracy in site investigation at urban areas. In this paper, a new technique called the pseudo-DC resistivity survey (in brief, PDC-R) was proposed to minimize the adverse effect of ambient electrical noises in resistivity survey. PDC-R technique utilizes an AC current with frequency range of 0.1 to 1.0 Hz rather than DC current, which is used for conventional resistivity survey. The motivation of using low-frequency AC current is to avoid 60-Hz components or its multiples in the resistivity survey which ambient noises are mostly composed of. The implementation of PDC-R technique also included the parametric study on skin effect, frequency effect and current-level effect, which led to the determination of optimal values of frequency and current level for PDC-R survey. The reliability and feasibility of PDC-R technique was verified through field tests, accompanied by the comparison with DC resistivity survey and CapSASW tests.
In this paper, we used the electrical resistivity survey as a simple and reasonable technique to evaluate the effectiveness of grouting. And, a mechanism was also analyzed to understand how the electrical resistivity is affected by the loss of fine material in the core of a dam. From this mechanism, it was confirmed that electrical resistivity value of the damage section may be up or down depending on the survey conditions. This result seems to be contrary to the previous study that electrical resistivity of the damage zone become alway low. To clarify what was investigated, the electrical resistivity before and after grouting was compared and analyzed. As the result, it was concluded that grouting effectiveness was successfully assessed by electrical resistivity survey.
Soil deformations such as settlement, heaving and lateral flow have frequently happened on marine reclaimed soft grounds due to embankment filling or banking. The electrical resistivity survey was applied to investigate on ground surface such soil deformation without disturbance of ground. A test embankment was performed to assess soil deformation in marine reclaimed soft grounds, where was located at Sihwa area in western coast of Korean peninsula. The soft ground was composed of clayey sediments. After embankment filling, the boundary of soil deformation affected by the filling could be investigated with application of the electrical resistivity survey. The result of electric resistivity survey shows that the extent of deformation is about 5 m laterally to the southern direction of embankment and about 5~6 m vertically in depth, which is about 1-1.2 times of embankment height. This shows that the electric resistivity survey can be applied to interpret the ground deformation in a soft ground region.

Unexpected anomalies in the geotechnical investigation at design stage may cause problems during tunnel excavation. Therefore, it is important to predict the ground condition ahead of a tunnel face during tunnel excavation in order to prevent tunnel collapse. Despite the fulfillment of an electrical resistivity survey at the tunnel face, the existing electrical resistivity survey program can produce distorted results by the limitation of tunnel modelling. In this background, this study develops a modelling program for an electrical resistivity survey considering the tunnel shape. Numerical simulation and inverse calculation were performed for the electrical resistivity survey in the tunnel using the developed program. As a result, it was proved that the developed program could predict accurately the anomalous object's location and condition ahead of the tunnel face.
In this study, an electrical resistivity survey and a drilling investigation were conducted at an animal carcass disposal site. Chemical analysis of leachate collected from the site was also performed (sampling times: May 2011 and June 2012). Five lines of dipole-dipole electrical resistivity surveys were carried out, along with drilling investigations at 3 points within the disposal areas and 11 points near the disposal site. Two-dimensional inverse modeling of the collected resistivity data was performed to evaluate the properties (size, depth, and form) of the disposal site. Leachate analysis showed that pH of leachate decreased from 7.4 to 6.7, while Eh changed from -358 mV to -48 mV over time. In addition, dissolved ions increased due to the progression of carcass decomposition. Results of the electrical resistivity survey indicated that low resistivity zones (minimum value, $0.64{\Omega}m$) existed at a depth of 8 m from the surface. Considering the bedrock location and carcass disposal depth, there was no evidence of bedrock contamination by leachate. The results of the electrical resistivity survey are consistent with those of the drilling investigation, which indicates that electrical resistivity effectively depicted the properties of the disposal site. This study demonstrates that electrical resistivity survey is a suitable technique for investigation of animal carcass disposal sites.
An electrical resistivity survey is widely conducted for the safety management of embankment. In this study we investigated how a tidal variation affects the interpretation of electrical resistivity monitoring data of the embankment located in west coast. We monitored the variation of electrical resistivity on the coastal embankment where there was a high tidal variation for 3 days in every 3 hours. Electrical resistivity monitoring data showed a variation of resistivity distribution in specific area according to the time, which demonstrated some correlation with a tidal height variation. Therefore, we highly recommend that a tidal effect be considered when electrical resistivity survey is conducted on the embankment where there is a high tidal variation. For further study, we need a long term electrical resistivity monitoring and analyzing on tidal variation.
This study introduces integrated approach on detection of a leakage in a sea wall based on remote sensing, electric resistivity survey, electromagnetic survey, and borehole survey for the Seosan A-Region sea wall. The satellite temperature distribution from Landsat ETM+ data identifies water leakage distribution and period by analyzing temperature mixing patterns between sea water and fresh water. Electric resistivity survey provides both horizontal and vertical anomaly distributions over the sea wall showing below average electric resistivity. Electromagnetic survey(electrical conductivity survey) reveals the potential possible leakage areas with minimal background impact by comparing electrical conductivity values between high and low tides. Borehole image processing system confirmed the locations of anomalies identified from the other survey methods and distributions of vertical fracture zones. The integrated approach identified 41.7% of the sea wall being the most probable area vulnerable to water leakage and effectively approximated both horizontal and vertical distribution of water leakage. The integrated analysis of remote sensing, electric resistivity survey, electromagnetic survey and borehole survey is considered to be an optimal method in identifying water leakage distribution, period, and extent of fractures knowledged from the boreholes.

For safety evaluation of a rock-fill dim, it is often necessary to investigate spatial distribution of weak zones such as fracture. Both DC-resistivity survey and seismic(SASW) method are usually used for the purpose. Recently, Multichannel analysis of surface waves(MASW) method which makes up for the weak point of SASW method is developed and the site examination which is simple came to be possible comparatively. In order to obtain 2-D shear-wave velocity(Vs) profile along the dam axis that can be associated with dynamic properties of filled materials, MASW method was adapted. Then, DC-resistivity survey and drilling survey were performed to compare with each results. We confirmed that the MASW method and DC-resistivity survey show complementary result that corresspond with drilling result. Therefore, MASW method is an efficient method for dynamic characterization of dam-filling materials and also the combination of related methods such as DC-resistivity can lead to an effective safety evaluation of rock-fill dam.
