  • The fault current of the power transmission system is greater than that of the power distribution system. Therefore, the introduction of superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is more needed to reduce the increased fault current. The trigger-type SFCL consists of the high-temperature superconducting element (HTSC), the current limiting reactor (CLR) and the circuit breaker (CB). The trigger-type SFCL can be used to supplement the disadvantages of the resistive-type SFCL. The operation characteristics of the current ratio differential relay which is usually applied to the protection device of the power transmission system are expected to be affected under fault conditions and the applicability of the trigger-type SFCL. In this paper, we analyzed the operating characteristics, by the fault conditions, between the current ratio differential relay for line protection and the trigger-type SFCL in the power transmission system through the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation.

  • The flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has the attractive characteristics that can adjust the current limiting level by the turns ratio and the winding direction of two coils. To apply this type SFCL into power system, the analysis for the recovery characteristics of it together with the current limiting characteristic is needed. In this paper, the experiments of the current limiting and the recovery characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL with YBCO thin film were performed. The recovery characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL dependent on the winding direction of two coils were analyzed through the comparison with the resistive type SFCL.

  • The ongoing Superconducting Fault Current Limiter(SFCL) development mainly has focused on the application of commercializaton and power system through combining with normal-conducting device, moving away from current-limiting method, which is solely dependant on the existing superconductor. Compared to the structural development above, on the other hand, the research on applying superconducting current-limiting element to SFCL, the heart of SFCL, still has a lot left to do, apart form traditional resistive type SFCL. In this study, we looked into the current limiting characteristic of SFCL using core and coil. YBCO coated conductor with stainless steel stabilizer layer was verified by the excellent of current-limiting element of the resistive type SFCL that has a high Jc and index as well as being superior in mechanical property. Also, we study temperature characteristics and resistance characteristics, max voltage, response time and current-limiting ability that can be an indicator as current-limiting element while applying to superconducting current-limiting element caused by variation of winding direction, winding ratio of SFCL using core and coil.

  • Superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL) have been progressing due to the development of superconducting technology. The resistor type SFCL is one of the promising current limiting devices in power system for its effective operation. For proper application and operation of a SFCL, the prior investigation of fundamental characteristics and its effects to the distribution systems are needed. The most important current limiting behavior of a SFCL is dominated by quenching and recovery characteristics. In this paper, the resistive type SFCL was developed by using EMTP/ATPDraw and MODELS language. The operating characteristics and current limiting behaviors of the SFCL in distribution systems have been simulated and investigated.

  • We have investigated the quench behavior of the series connection of resistive type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) components based on YBCO films. Equal shunt resistors $R_s$ across individual SFCL components successfully produced simultaneous Quenches for 5 components in series, resulting in equal application of voltage to all components. If the two components having the highest and the lowest critical currents ($I_c$) quench safely, others quench altogether The highest shunt resistance is to guarantee the safe quenches of all components, leading to the equal voltage applications within the first half cycle after a fault in the short circuit test. The highest $R_s$ was found to be 28 [$\Omega$] for the components in the given quench environment. Considering the safe quenches and protection coordination, the optimal $R_s$ was suggested to be approximately a half of the highest $R_s$,, allowing wide selection of $R_s$ and $I_c$'s. This design provides a practical wav of connecting small SFCL components in series for high voltage application.

  • We investigated the characteristics of the hybrid-type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) by the number of secondary windings. The SFCL consists of a transformer, which has a primary winding and several secondary windings with serially connected $YB_{a2}Cu_{3}O_{7}$ films. In order to increase the capacity. of the SFCL, the serial connection between each current limiting unit is necessary. Resistive-type SFCL has a difficulty in quenching simultaneously between the units due to slight differences of their critical current densities. The hybrid-type SFCL could achieve the simultaneous quenching through the electrical isolation and the mutual flux linkage among the units. We confirmed that the capacity of the SFCL could be increased effectively through the simultaneous quenching among the units. In addition, the power burden of the system could be reduced by adjusting the number of secondary windings. We will investigate the method to increase the capacity through serial and Parallel connections among current limiting units.

  • The YBCO coated conductor is an important element that forms the superconducting power equipment. The first advantage of applying YBCO coated conductor to superconducting power equipment is that it can effectively addresses the normal and fault currents using less quantity of wire than when using Bi tape due to its high critical current density. Second, it can limit the fault current fast because its index value is high. so that the resistance can be produced fast when it is applied to the superconducting current limiting element. Third, the type of stabilization layer that surrounds the YBCO superconductor is selectable and the magnitude of the resistance that is produced from quenching can be adjusted. This study researched into the manufacture of current-limiting element of using YBCO coated conductor, into the characteristics of current limiter that considered by combining the manufactured element with the resistive-type superconducting fault current limiter.

  • We present investigations of a hybrid type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL), which consists of transformers and resistive superconducting elements. The secondary windings of the transformer were separated into several electrically isolated circuits and linked inductively with each other by mutual flux, each of which has a superconducting current limiting element of $YBa_2Cu_3O_7$ (YBCO) stripes as a current limiting element. Simple connection in series of the SFCL elements tends to produce ill-timed quenching because of power dissipation unbalance between SFCL elements. Both electrical isolation and mutual flux linkage of the elements provides a solution to power dissipation unbalance, inducing simultaneous quench and current redistribution of the YBCO films. This design enables to increase the voltage rating of SFCL with given YBCO stripes.

  • The quench characteristics of flux-lock type high-Tc superconducting fault current limiters(SFCL) was investigated, $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$(YBCO) thin film was used as the current limiting elements of the flux-lock type SFCL. The quench characteristics of current limiting elements consisting of the flux-lock type SFCL was more improved than that of the resistive type SFCL.

  • Power systems are becoming larger and larger for meeting electric power demand. Therefore, the over-currents resulting from contingencies such short circuits are increasing higher. The Maximum short circuit current of modern power system is becoming so large that circuit breaker are not expected th be able to shut down the current in the future. In order to cut over-currents, a system composed of a superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) and traditional breaker seems to provide a promising solution for future power operation. In present paper, three line-to-ground fault is assumed to happen at the center of 345kV transmission lines in a large capacity electric power system The superconducting fault current limiter was represented using a commutation type, which consists of a non-inductive superconducting coil and current limiting element(resistor or reactor). The introduction merits of the SFCL were investigated quantitatively by RTDS/EMTDC from the viewpoint of current limiting performance, the prevention of the voltage drop at the load bus and comparison characteristics for two type SFCL. Desired design specification and operation parameters of SFCL were also given qualitatively by the performance evaluation of the two type SFCL in the power system.
