  • The rotation capacity of the moment connections could significantly influence on the seismic performance of steel moment resisting frames. Current seismic provisions require that beam-to-column connections in Intermediate Moment Frames (IMF) should have a drift capacity as large as 0.02 radian. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the rotation capacity of moment connections on the seismic performance of high-rise IMFs. For this purpose, thirty- and forty-story high-rise IMFs were designed according to the current seismic design provisions. The seismic performance of designed model frames was evaluated according to FEMA P695. This study showed that the forty-story IMF satisfied the seismic performance objective specified in FEMA P695 when the rotation capacity of the connections was larger than 0.02. However, thirty-story IMFs satisfied the performance objective when the connection rotation capacity is larger than 0.03.

  • Results of an experimental investigation on the behavior and ultimate shear capacity of 27 reinforced concrete Transfer (deep) beams are summarized. The main variables were percent longitudinal(tension) steel (0.28 to 0.60%), percent horizontal web steel (0.60 to 2.40%), percent vertical steel (0.50to 2.25%), percent orthogonal web steel, shear span-to-depth ratio (1.10 to 3.20) and cube concrete compressive strength (32 MPa to 48 MPa).The span of the beam has been kept constant at 1000 mm with100 mm overhang on either side of the supports. The result of this study shows that the load transfer capacity of transfer (deep) beam with distributed longitudinal reinforcement is increased significantly. Also, the vertical shear reinforcement is more effective than the horizontal reinforcement in increasing the shear capacity as well as to transform the brittle mode of failure in to the ductile mode of failure. It has been observed that the orthogonal web reinforcement is highly influencing parameter to generate the shear capacity of transfer beams as well as its failure modes. Moreover, the results from the experiments have been processed suitably and presented an analytical model for design of transfer beams in high-rise buildings for estimating the shear capacity of beams.

  • Ductile fracture is one of the most common failure modes of steel beam-to-column connections in moment resisting frames. Most proposed evaluation methods of the plastic deformation capacity of a beam until ductile fracture are based on steel beam tests, where the material's yield strength/ratio, the beam's moment gradient, and loading history are the most important parameters. It is impossible and unpractical to cover all these parameters in real tests. Therefore, a new attempt to evaluate a beam's plastic deformation capacity through analysis is introduced in this paper. Another important issue is about the loading histories. Recent years, the effect on the structural component under long-duration ground motion has drawn great attentions. Steel beams tends to experience a large number of loading cycles with small amplitudes during long-duration earthquakes. However, current research often focuses on the beam's behavior under standard incremental loading protocols recommended by respective countries. In this paper, the plastic deformation capacity of steel beams subjected to long duration ground motions was evaluated through analytical methodology.

  • Standards for seismic assessment and retrofitting of buildings provide deformation limit states for structural members and connections. However, in order to perform fully consistent performance-based seismic analyses of soil-structure systems; deformation limit states must also be available for foundations that are vulnerable to nonlinear actions. Because such limit states have never been established in the past, a laboratory testing program was conducted to study the rotational capacity of small-scale foundation models under combined axial load and moment. Fourteen displacement-controlled monotonic and cyclic tests were performed using a cohesionless soil contained in a $2.0{\times}2.0{\times}1.2m$ container box. It was found that the foundation models exhibited a stable hysteretic behavior for imposed rotations exceeding 0.06 rad and that the measured foundation moment capacity complied well with Meyerhof's equivalent width concept. Simplified code-based soil-structure analyses of an 8-story building under an array of strong ground motions were also conducted to preliminary evaluate the implication of finite rotational capacity of vulnerable foundations. It was found that for the same soil as that of the experimental program foundations would have a deformation capacity that far exceeds the imposed rotational demands under the lateral load resisting members so yielding of the soil may constitute a reliable source of energy dissipation for the system.

  • The composite systems, consisting of R/C Columns-Steel Beams, are reasonable structures because of their constructional and economical advantages, workability and so on. But, it is difficult to apply the composite systems to actual design due to material dissimilarity and complicate stress flow in the connection. This study aims to propose the hybrid beam-column connection system with structural tee and through experimental research make clear the shear and moment resistance capacity and stress transfer mechanism.

  • The use of concrete pavements is increasing by virtue of durability and excellent load resisting capacity. But cracks and demage in concrete pavements may be occurred by continuous reciclic load, as time goes by. Therefore, transverser contraction joints are constructed in concrete pavements to relieve tensile stresses, and when properly spaced they control the location of transverse cracks.

  • The modular beam made of steel material is wholly responsible for the load stress of the structure, therefore securing the fire-resistant capacity of the steel beam is absolutely important. The economic efficiency achieved by minimizing the thickness of the fire-resistant board attached, is also essential at the same time. Accordingly, a study of optimization of the thickness and interval of fire-resistant boards shall be conducted side by side. Therefore, in this study we have anticipated fire-resistant capacity by using a general-purpose S/W for finite elements, ABAQUS(6.7.1), in order to propose the configurable conditions that can secure the optimal fire-resisting capacity of modular beam. As a result of this analysis, it was impossible to secure the fire-resistance capacity when directly attaching fire-resistant board(30mm) on the modular board in accordance with KS F 2257-1, and the fire-resistant boards were manufactured in shape of module in consideration of its installation interval rather than direct application.

  • Earthquake resistant R/C frame structures are generally designed to prevent the columns from plastic hinging. R/C columns under higher axial load or strong earthquake showed a brittle behavior due to the deterioration of strength and stiffness degradation. An experimental study was conducted to examine the behavior and to find the relationship between amounts of lateral reinforcements and compressive strength of ten R/C column specimens subjected to reversed cyclic lateral load and higher axial load. Test results are follows : An increase in the amount of lateral reinforcement results in a significant improvement in both ductility and energy dissipation capacities of columns. R/C columns with sub-tie provide the improved ductility capacity than those with closely spaced lateral reinforcement only. While the load resisting capacity of the high strength R/C columns is higher than the normal strength concrete columns under both an identical ratio of lateral reinforcement, however the ductility capacity of high strength R/C columns is decreased considerably. Therefore, the amounts of lateral reinforcement must be designed carefully to secure the sufficient ductility and economic design of HSC columns under higher axial load.

  • This paper presents a new strengthening method of underground box structures against seismic loads for anti-seismic capacity improvement. A threaded steel member with pressure devices(so called 'Pre-flexed member system') is used to improve seismic capacity of the RC box structure. The pre-flexed member system is fixed the corner of opening after chemical anchor was installed by drilling hole on the box structure. The structural performance was evaluated analytically. Two bracing types of strengthening methods were used; conventional bracing method and I-bracing pressure system. For the performance evaluation, seismic analyses were performed on moment and shear resisting structures with and without strength member system. Numerical results confirmed that the proposed pre-flexed member system can enhance the seismic capacity of the underground RC box structures.
