Because of the environmental problems, automotive companies are trying to reduce the weight of car body. Therefore, TRIP(TRansformation Induced Plasticity) steels, which have high strength and ductility have been developed. Welding process is a complex process; therefore deciding the optimal welding conditions on the basis of experimental data is an effective method. However, trial-and-error method to decide the optimal conditions requires too many experiments. To overcome these problems, response surface methodology was used. Response surface methodology is a collection of mathematical and statistical techniques that are used in the modeling and analysis of problems in which a response of interest is influenced by several variables and the objective is to optimize this response. This method was applied to the resistance spot welding process of the TRIP steel to optimize the welding parameters.
For the resistance spot welds of CR1180 and GA1180 TRIP steels, the weld quality evaluation method using the digitalized X-ray transmission imaging apparatus was investigated in comparison with the crosssectional examination method. In the case of the resistance spot welding of CR1180, three circular regions, such as WZ(white zone), GZ(grey zone) and DZ(dark zone), appeared on X-ray image and they corresponded to the diameters of indentation mark, nugget and corona bond, respectively. The variation of X-ray transmission thickness due to the thickness variation of the weld seemed to be mainly responsible for the formation of those contrasts. The X-ray image contrast formed from the variation of transmission thickness at the outer border line of DZ could also enable the inspections of the notch shape, nonuniformity of the welding pressure and spatter from its sharpness, concentricity and the normal straight line, respectively. The X-ray image of the resistance spot weld of galvannealed GA1180 TRIP steel was very similar to that of CR1180 TRIP steel except the crown shaped outer border line of DZ which was considered to be due to the melting behavior of zinc having the boiling temperature even lower than the melting temperature of steel.

According to weight lightning trend of automobile body, necessity of resistance spot welding (RSW) of Mg alloy on automobile industry is increasing rapidly because of the highest specific strength among commercial metals. Mg alloy has low electric resistance and high thermal conductivity like as Al alloy, so that needs applying high current in short time when welding. Thick oxide film of Mg alloy pollutes the electrodes and makes partial current carrying paths when on welding. Partial current carrying paths signify excessive concentration of current. There can initiate expulsion easily and reduces electrode life rapidly. Generating partial current carrying paths and expulsions are influenced by shapes of electrode. Therefore, electrode life also influenced by shape. In this study, we perform life test of RSW electrode of radius type. Measure tensile shear load and nugget size every spot alternately. As a result, radius type electrode can extend life over twice as dome type electrode.
The excellent beam quality of high power fiber lasers are commonly used for remote welding applications in body job applications. The Welding speed and productivity is unmatched with any other welding technology including resistance spot welding or traditional laser welding. High tooling cost for clamping and bulky safety enclosures are obstacles which are limiting the use. With the newly developed Laser stitch welding gun we have an integrated clamping in the process tool and the laser welding is shielded in a way that no external enclosure is needed. Operation of this laser welding gun is comparable with resistance spot welding but 2-times faster. Laser stitch welding is faster than spot welding and slower than remote welding. It is a laser welding tool with all the laser benefits like welding of short flanges, weld ability of Ultra High Strength steel, 3 layers welding and Aluminium welding. Together with low energy consumption and minimum operation cost of IPG fiber laser it is a new and sharp tool for economic car body assembly.

As the technique of resistance spot welding became more and more advanced the factors hitherto considered secondary become more and more important. Among these factors the distribution of heat and temperature during resistance spot welding is particularly important in conjunction with thermal stress, strain and residual stress, strain problems. The analytical investigations upon the transient temperature due to resistance spot welding were made for the carbon steel plate and aluminum alloy plate. The numerical values obtained by the analytical investigation are nearly identical with the temperature distribution which obtained by D.J. Sullivan and some other experimental data. It was thought therefore useful to estimate the heat effect upon the material such as a residual stress and strain, metalurgical change, change in physical properties and etc.
The development of a light-weight vehicle is in great demand for enhancement of fule efficiency and dynamic performance. The vehicle weight can be reduced effectively by using lightweight materials such as aluminum and magnesium. However, if such materials are used in vehicles, there are often instances when different materials such as aluminum and steel need to be joined to each other. The conventional joining method, namely resistance spot welding, cannot be used in joining different materials. Self-piercing rivet(SPR) and adhesive bonding, however, are good alternatives to resistance spot welding. This paper is concerned with the crushing test of double hat-shaped member made by resistance spot welding, SPR and adhesive bonding. Various parameters of crashworthiness are analyzed and evaluated. Based on these results, the applicability of SPR and adhesive bonding are proposed as an alternative to resistance spot welding.
Resistance spot weldability of cold rolled 80kg/mm$^{2}$ and 45kg/mm$^{2}$ grade high strength steel sheets for automobile structure was investigated focussing on the influences of welding parameters such as welding current and welding time on the weld strength and the nugget formation. The results of this study showed that the optimum ranges of welding current for the grade 80 and grade 45 were 5.0 cycle(250 m sec.) It was also shown that the tensile shear strength of the resistance spot weld was strongly influenced by both current and time applied in welding procedure, however, the tensile shear strength was mainly affected by welding time for the higher strength steel.
A lumped mass damped vibratory model was proposed for quantitative understanding of welding machine characteristics. An experimental setup was developed to determine the mechanical parameters (moving mass m, equivalent stiffness k and damping c) which govern the dynamic mechanical response of the resistance spot welding machine. During the test, acceleration of the electrodes for each level of applied load was measured by accelerometer, filtered and numerically integrated to find the corresponding velocity and displacement. The machine dynamic parameters were determined by finding the unknowns of the proposed model with experimental data. A Simulink model was proposed to investigate the influence of these mechanical parameters on the welding process. The electrode response was simulated by changing values of stiffness and damping. It was observed that both of the machine parameters(c, k) have significant effect on the response of electrode head.
This study deals with spot weld ability of dissimilar aluminum alloy sheets in order to take advantage of its lightweight and strength. The paper also shows the relationship between weld elements(i.e. current, welding time and tip force) and weld quality on the resistance spot weld part of the same and dissimilar Al alloy. The conclusions are: (1) Because of excessive tip force, deep indentation remained at the Al 5182 side which is lower stiffness at the dissimilar Al alloy. (2) Weld quality (i.e. tensile shear strength) of dissimilar Al alloy is superior to that of the same Al 6061 alloy. (3) As long cycles, fatigue life of spot weld specimen on dissimilar Al alloy sheets was better than that of the same Al alloy.
