  • This paper describes the theoretical background and underlying principles behind the American Institute of Steel Construction Load and Resistance Factor Design (AISC LRFD) Specification for the analysis and stability design of steel frames. Various analysis procedures that can take into consideration the effects of member instability, frame instability, member-frame interaction, geometric imperfections, and inelasticity are reviewed. Design approaches by which these factors can be incorporated in the design of steel moment frames are addressed. Current specification guidelines for member and frame design in the U.S. are summarized. Examples are given to illustrate the validity of the design equations. Some future directions for the analysis and stability design of steel frames are discussed.

  • The new version of Code for Design of Steel Structures (GB50017-2003) and other design standards in China were released over the last two years. Comparing with the previous version (GBJ17-88), many clauses covering the connection design have been revised. A number of additional provisions are supplemented to specify the design requirements for beam-column moment connections, as well as gusset plates for truss joints. In this paper, a summary on the design rules on connections specified in the current Chinese code is presented, and relevant commentary and background information is provided whenever appropriate. The design criteria governing weld and bolt resistance is examined and reviewed. Moreover, several issues such as detailing requirements for stiffeners and end-plate connections are discussed.

  • This paper describes recent developments in composite construction and their effect on codified design procedures in the UK. Areas of particular interest include: rules on shear connection, design of beams with web openings, serviceability limits, such as floor vibrations, and fire safe design. The design of cellular beams with regular circular openings now includes generalized rules for web-post buckling, and for the development of in-plane moment in the web-post for asymmetric sections. Closed solutions for the maximum shear force due to limits on web-post bending or buckling are presented. The fire resistance of cellular beams is also dependent on the temperature of the web-post, and for closely spaced openings. It is necessary to increase the thickness of fire protection to the web. For serviceability design of beams, deflection limits and natural frequency and response factor for vibration are presented. It may be necessary to use stricter limits for certain applications.

  • Two-way slab-column specimens were tested under monotonic loading increased up to punching shear failure to investigate the beneficial effects of fiber-reinforced concrete. The parameters for experiments are the placement of fibers within the immediate column region, the placement on the entire surface of the slab, and no placement of fibers. The effects of these parameters on the punching shear capacity, negative moment cracking. and stiffness of the two-way slab specimens were studied. According to the results the addition of steel fibers in the slab around the column results in a significant improvement in the performance including the increase of punching shear resistance, greater post-cracking stiffness and smaller crack width at service load levels.

  • This study proposes a joint model consisting of different types of members as a new structural system, and then investigates the resulting structural behavior. The joint model consists of a concrete-filled steel tube column (CFT) together with a steel reinforced concrete at the end plus reinforced concrete beam at the center. For comparison, two other joint models were designed, that are, a CPT with a reinforced concrete beam, and a CFT with a steel reinforced concrete at the end plus steel concrete beam at the center, then their joint capacity and rigidity, energy absorption capacity, etc., were all investigated. From the results, the CFT column with a steel reinforced concrete at the end plus steel concrete beam at the center was outstanding in terms of its capacity and rigidity. The results of this analysis demonstrate that an adequate connection type and reinforcement method with different materials of increasing the rigidity, thereby producing a capacity improvement along with protection from pre-fractures.

  • A three dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes code based on the third derivative upwind is employed to simulate the flow around the underwater vehicle advancing on the calm water. Computations are carried out in the range of Froude numbers 0.4 to 0.7. The wave resistance, lift, moment and the pressure distribution on the body are calculated. Computations are performed in a rectangular grid system based on the Marker & Cell method. For validation, computation results are compared with existing experimental results.

  • Bending deformation and energy absorption characteristics of aluminum-composite hybrid tube beams have been analyzed for improvement in the bending performance of aluminum space frame by using experimental tests combined with theoretical and finite element analyses. Hybrid tube beams composed of glass fabric/epoxy layer wrapped around on aluminum tube were made in autoclave with the recommended curing cycle. Basic properties of aluminum material used for initial input data of the finite element simulation and theoretical analysis were obtained from the true stress-true strain curve of specimen which had bean extracted from the Al tube beam. A modified theoretical model was developed to predict the resistance to the collapse of hybrid tube beams subjected to a bending load. Theoretical moment-rotation angle curves of hybrid tube beams were in good agreement with experimental ones, which was comparable to the results obtained from finite element simulation. Hybrid tube beams strengthened by composite layer on the whole web and flange showed an excellent bending strength and energy absorption capability.

  • Granite is commonly used in the construction of the ancient stone pagodas of Korea. The material has excellent weathering resistance and durability, as well as high compressive strength. Most of the stone-made state-designated architectural heritage of Korea is made of granite. Therefore, the understanding of the structural feasibility of stone-made architectural heritage is crucial. Even though, until now, experimental studies for the reinforced stone have been rarely performed. This study intends to suggest a new methodology for the reinforcement of granite using a threaded titanium bar. Through the experimental study, the flexural behavior of the reinforced granite depending on the reinforcement ratio is investigated. Based on the test results, a moment-displacement relationship for the design of reinforced granite is suggested.

  • Steel tubes have an efficient shape with large second moment of inertia relative to their light weight. One of the main problems of these members is their low buckling resistance caused from having thin walls. In this study, steel foams with high strength over weight ratio is used to fill the steel tube to beneficially modify the response of steel tubes. The linear eigenvalue and plastic collapse FE analysis is done on steel foam filled tube under pure compression and three point bending simulation. It is shown that steel foam improves the maximum strength and the ability of energy absorption of the steel tubes significantly. Different configurations with different volume of steel foam and composite behavior is investigated. It is demonstrated that there are some optimum configurations with more efficient behavior. If composite action between steel foam and steel increases, the strength of the element will improve, in a way that, the failure mode change from local buckling to yielding.

  • Dawin Friction Corp. has been advanced sintered brake pad for Korean concept high speed train (so called G7 train) with KRRI, You Jin and Rotem without the assistance of foreign company. In the course of development, the evaluation of our and foreign disk pads was performed by lab scale dynamometer and full scale dynamometer. As the result of dynamo test, it is shown that our developed brake disk is equal or superior to those of foreign companies in many respects, for example, wear resistance, noise, etc. The new brake pad which is developed through 'post G7-project' is equipped with G7 train and is under many tests without any problems at the present moment.
