This study aimed to evaluate surface morphology and resin tag penetration of resin infiltration into primary anterior teeth after enamel deproteinization with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) prior to phosphoric acid ($H_3PO_4$) etching. Ninety primary anterior teeth with non-cavitated caries lesion were devided five groups according to enamel pretreatment as follows, group I-15% hydrochloric acid (HCl) 2min. ; group II-5.25% NaOCl 1min., 35% $H_3PO_4$ 1min. ; group III-5.25% NaOCl 2min., 35% $H_3PO_4$ 1min. ; group IV-5.25% NaOCl 1min., 35% $H_3PO_4$ 2min. ; group V-5.25% NaOCl 2min., 35% $H_3PO_4$ 2min. Fifteen teeth were examined etched surface structure using field emission-scanning electron microscope. Seventy five teeth were infiltrated with resin, maximum penetration depth and percentage penetration were analysed using dual fluorescence confocal microscopy. As the application time of NaOCl increased, ratio of enamel type I, II were increased. Percentage penetration (PP) was higher in group V than group II, III (p < 0.05). PP of group IV, V did not show any differences. Non-cavitated caries of primary anterior teeth can be treated with resin infiltration. Enamel deproteinization with NaOCl prior to 35% $H_3PO_4$ etching could be an alternative of 15% HCl etching in resin infiltration.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of dentin bonding agents on the bond strength of composite resin restorations in case of applying the dentin bonding agents to acid etched enamel surfaces. Freshly extracted 364 bovine anterior teeth were selected as a adherents. 320 enamel specimens were divided into two groups(unetched group (1) and etched group (2) for testing the shear bond strength, 40 specimens were used for the hardness testing, and 4 specimens of rest were to observe the resin-tag formation into etched enamel surfaces. All surfaces of enamel specimens were polished with 320~1500 SiC paper under continuous running water. In Group (1), 100 enamel specimens were polished and unetched. 220 polished enamel specimens in Group (2) were etched with 37 % phosphoric acid solution for 60 seconds, washed with water for 20 seconds, and dried with a light air pressure for 60 seconds. Three kinds of dentin bonding agents(Gluma, Prisma, Scotchbond 2) were evaluated the effect on the bond strength to conditioned enamel surfaces. Shear bond strengths were measured on the three cases such as a coating of primer only, a coating of sealer only, and a sequential coating of primer and sealer to acid etched enamel surfaces were compared with the bond strengths measured by the coating of enamel bonding agent followed by the bonding of composite resin (Photo clearfil bright, Kuraray, Japan) to unetched and acid etched enamel surfaces. In addition, the hardness tested on the adhesive fractured surface between composite resin enamel as a mean of evaluation of a factor whether the mechanical bond strengths were affected and the penetration of dentin bonding agents into etched enamel surfaces was also observed. Bond strengths were measured using the method of shear bond strength by a universal testing machine (Instron-4467, USA), statistical test were applied to the results using a one way analysis variance(ANOVA), and hardness was measured by the Vicker's Hardness Tester(MHT-i, Matsuzawa, Japan) and the penetration of the resins were observed by the SEM (Hitachi, S-2300, Japan). The following conclusions were drawn; 1. Enamel bonding agent showed to affect the improvement of bond strength of composite resin to enamel surface both unetched and etched. 2. Dentin bonding agents could be resulted in increase of bond strength to unetched enamel surface, but there were no statistical significances. 3. Bond strengths to etched enamel surface were significantly decreased with a coating of dentin primer only. 4. Coating of sealer only and coating of primer and sealer noticed the similar bond strengths of composite resin to etched enamel using the enamel bonding agents. 5. The applying method proved to be more effective than the kinds of dentin bonding agents on the bond strength of composite resin to etched enamel than the kind of dentin. 6. Vicker's hardness numbers of dentin bonding agents were lower than that of composite resin, but the degree of penetration of dentin bonding agents into etched enamel surfaces was excellent.

Resin infiltration has been used as a treatment option for the management of early caries lesions recently. However, the etching procedure with hydrochloric acid might be somewhat stressful for the clinicians due to safety problem especially for young children, leading to less utility. This study aims at searching for some alternative surface pretreatment methods of resin infiltration for the early caries lesions in primary anterior teeth by comparing penetration depth of various methods. No significant difference was found in penetration ratio between etched surface with 15% hydrochloric acid and 35% phosphoric acid. However, the penetration ratio was significantly higher in groups pretreated either with dental pumice or abrasive metal strip (p < .05). By the result of this study, etching with phosphoric acid as an alternative of hydrochloric acid was thought clinically acceptable as a pretreatment method for resin infiltration in early caries lesions for primary anterior teeth. It was notable that surface conditioning with dental pumice or metal strip before etching was effective in increasing the penetration. This procedural modification might be much more correspondent with minimally invasive concept and hopefully contribute to increased safety and utility in pediatric dentistry.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of moistening and air-drying of acid conditioned dentin and enamel on the marginal microleakage. In this study, Class V cavity were prepared on both buccal and lingual surface of sixty extracted human premolars with cementum margin. These specimens were randomly devided into three groups and three dentin adhesives(Scotchbond Multi-Purpose, All bond 2, Prisma Universal Bond 3) were applied to each group. The specimens in each group were subdevided into four groups (Wet/primed, Dry/primed, Wet/not primed, Dry/not primed) and the etched dentin and enamel surface were treated these four surface treatments prior to the placement of a bonding agent or adhesive. Wet/primed group was simply blot-dried with a damp facial tissue before primer placement ; Dry/primed group was air dried for 30 seconds before the placement of a primer ; Wet/not primed group and Dry/not primed group were not primed after blot dried and air dried for 30 seconds each group. The bonding agent and composite resin were applied for each group. All specimens were exposed to 500 cycle of thermal stress. Specimens were placed in a silver nitrate solution and then sectioned buccolingually through the center of the restoration. The dye penetrations of the specimens were observed with a stereo microscope. The statistical test were applied to the results using a one way analysis variance (ANOVA) and Duncan's multiple range test. The aspects of silver ion penetration into the resin/dentin interface were examined under scanning electron microscopy. The results were as follows. 1. In all groups, the enamel margin showed significantly lower leakage value than the cementum margin (p<0.05). 2. Regardless of various surface treatment and dentin adhesives, there was no significant difference at the enamel margins (p>0.05). 3. At the dentin margins, the leakage values of Dry/not primed group showed significantly higher than that of the other groups (p<0.05). The leakage values of Wet/primed group showed significantly lower than that of the other groups, but, there was no significant difference between Wet group and Dry group. 4. There was no significantly difference between the dentin adhesives regarding the surface treatments in all groups(p>0.05). 5. On the backscatterd scanning electron microscopy observation, the penetration of the silver ion occured at the bonding resin/dentin interface. In the Wet/primed group, resindentin hybrid zone and resin penetration into the dentin was observed. The resin tags were compactively formed to a thickness of $3\sim4{\mu}m$ at the upper part of dentinal tubules. In the Dry/primed group, the thickness of the hybrid zone and the diameter, depth of the resin tags diminished. In the Non-primed groups, the hybrid zone was not identified and few resin tag was observed. There was the gap formation in the resin/dentin interface.
The purpose of this study was to estimate the relation between techniques used for microleakage from dye penetration and for marginal adaptation from SEM evaluation of the restoration. Using high speed #330 bur class V cavities ($4{\times}3{\times}1.5 mm$ around CEJ) were prepared on the buccal surface of 20 extracted human molars. Six dimples as reference points for SEM and dye penetration evaluation were made with 1/2 round bur. Cavity was bulk filled with microhybrid composite resin (Esthet X) and all-in-one adhesive (Xeno III). Teeth were stored in saline solution for one day, after then, they were finished and polished using Sof-Lex system. Fifty percent silver nitrate dye solution was used for the evaluation of microleakage and resin replica was used for marginal adaptation. All of these were done after 1000 times thermocycling between 5 and $55^{\circ}C$. Vertical sections were made through three dimples of restoration to obtain samples for the evaluation of dye penetration and inner marginal adaptation. Outer adaptational estimation was done with an intact restoration before sectioning. Dye penetration was determined in three degrees and percentage of outer and inner leaky margin was estimated from SEM image The data were analysed statistically: Spearman's rho test were used to check relationships between two methods. The result were as follows : 1. There were significant relationships between degree of dye penetration and inner and outer marginal adaptations each (p < 0.01). 2. However, there was no significant relationship between the results or inner and outer marginal adaptation. Within the results of this study, relationship between the percentage of marginal adaptation and microleakage shows significant relationship. However, inner and outer marginal adaptation did not show any significant relationship mutually.

In this study, we observed the penetration of the resin infiltrant into natural initial caries by SEM and CLSM, evaluated the pH and viscosity of resin infiltrant and several adhesives(All-bond 2, Scotchbond Multi-purpose, Clearfil SE bond), and measured the surface roughness and the microhardness on permanent teeth before and after applied resin infiltrant into initial enamel caries. The viscosity(Pa.s) was observed for resin infiltrant($0.173{\pm}0.012$), All-bond 2($0.754{\pm}0.030$), Scotchbond Multi-purpose($1.46{\pm}0.137$), and Clearfil SE bond($1.28{\pm}0.125$). The pH was measured for resin infiltrant (4.7), All-bond 2(7.5), Scotchbond Multi-purpose(8.2), and Clearfil SE bond(4.67). An application procedure of resin infiltrant increased the surface roughness and the microhardness insignificantly(p>0.05), when compared to non-applied specimens.

The concept of resin infiltration which was born in an innovative philosophy to arrest the incipient caries. However, the structural changes of resin infiltrated lesions have not yet explained completely. The liquid resin might contribute not only to maximizing the penetration but to deteriorating physical stability. This study was performed to examine some physical and histological features of resin infiltrated incipient carious lesions. With the specimen of resin infiltrated lesions, microhardness by nanoindentation in depth profile, morphology of resin tags were revealed after HCl dissolution, and degree of microleakage were assessed. The percentage of microhardness of surface layer and lesion body of untreated specimen to sound enamel was 64.6% and 24.6% respectively, while that of resin-infiltrated lesions was 72.1%, showing significant difference (p<0.05). The resin tags observed under SEM had relatively homogeneous length of 433(282~501) ${\mu}m$ on the average. Among 20 specimens for microleakage assessment, 13 specimens showed no leakage while 5 and 2 showed leakage into outer and inner half of lesion respectively. It was thought the infiltrant resin penetrates deeply and homogeneously into lesion body and improves its hardness with relatively good physical stability.
With the aim to utilize pine wood(Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.) as an interior building materials, such as flooring material, monoethylene glycol(MEG) resin solution was impregnated into greenwood. Specimens of three different qualities, that is, normal wood, resinous wood and compression wood, were prepared. Distribution of resin element(phosphorus) in MEG resin solution-impregnated woods and preservative effectiveness against brown rot fungi(Tyromyces palustris and Serpula lacrymans) of these woods were investigated. The results were as follows: 1. The concentration of phosphorus into cell walls of resinous wood and compression wood was lower compared to that of normal wood. This shows that the quality of wood has an influence on the penetration of MEG resin solution into the wood. It was shown from a leaching test that MEG resin could be leached out easily from the cell walls. 2. The resinous wood and compression wood, even without MEG resin solution impregnation had high decay resistance. For normal wood, significant improvement of preservative effectiveness was observed after impregnation of MEG resin solution. It was shown that MEG resin was leached out from the woods after leaching test, resulting in the reduction of preservative effectiveness. From this result, suitability of MEG resin solution-impregnated woods as an interior materials was recognized.
Asphalt sealants for the crack repair of asphalt concrete road were prepared using waste lubricant oil in this work. The waste lubricant oil was compounded with asphalt(AP-5), SBS triblock copolymer, a tackifying agent(petroleum resin), and antioxidants. Cone penetration, softening point, ductility, elongation by tensile adhesion, and resilience of asphalt sealant compounds were measured. Cone penetration of asphalt sealant compounds increased with the increase of waste lubricant oil content while their softening point, ductility, and resilience decreased. By the addition of talc as an extender, softening point and resilience of asphalt sealants increased, but cone penetration, ductility, and elongation by tensile adhesion of those decreased with the proportion of talc content. The most economic asphalt sealant which could pass an ASTM specification could be manufactured by the big decrement of petroleum resin content.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the marginal sealing ability of Hipol composite resin. Using freshly extracted human teeth and 2% acquous methylene blue, the marginal leakage of dye in restorative materials such as Hi-pol, Adaptic, Nuvasystem, Epolite and Amalgam was investigated at 37℃ and under temperature cycling between 4℃ and 60℃. The results were as follows; 1. All the filling materials revealed the penetration of dye between cavity walls and restorations. 2. Hi-pol and Adaptic showed more marginal leakage than other materials and the degree of dye penetration in Hi-pol was similar to that of Adaptic. 3. Nuva system showed the least marginal leakage at 37℃ and under temperature cycling between 4℃ and 60℃. 4. Under temperature cycling, all materials showed a slight increase in marginal leakage except Epolite, which showed the greastest change in leakage.
